View Full Version : General MMA Thread

I know there are a couple of other threads out there talking about MMA, but I thought I'd start this one to talk about general happenings in MMA and to keep the other ones just about specific events.
Anyway, I was surprised no one commented on what's going to with Chute-box, mainly Shogun coming to the UFC or Wanderlai's decision to sit out the rest of 2007. Any thoughts?

We have one the Ultimate Fighter Thread, we kinda talk all about MMA. So lets just try to keep it to that instead of having like 4 different threads.
Why have seperate ones? They are owned by the same people.
Thats like having a AFC and NFC seperate thread.

why have 2 threads, yes there owned by the same people, but there still 2 different companies. would it make since to talk about butterbean ( a pride fighter) in a UFC thread? i dont think so.

Yes, because just because a thread says something does not mean you have to stick to that topic. It's called TUF thread but yet we talk about everything in MMA.

A general mma thread is perfect to talk about all the organizations such as Bodog, Pride FC, UFC, KOTC and the IFL.
I am not real surprised with Wandy's decision to sit out. I think he could use the time to train and to heal up after taking a few brutal beatings. I love the Shogun signing!!!! I like watching that guy fight. My only worry about him is that he loved the axe kick and that is not allowed in the UFC. I wonder how well he will fare without the ablity to use that kick.
I hope they put him up against someone tough right away and not give him a feeder. These guys that come from Pride are some of the best in the world and it makes no sense to have them fight some guy who is not ranked in the top ten.

Did anyone else here that there will be an announcement at UFC 71. I heard through the rumor mill that they will announce Shogun and Mayhem!

Guess that's why it was only a rumor. They did say the next challenger for the title would be announced and that turned out to be true. Who the fighter was didn't. Henderson against Rampage should be a good fight.
One other thing to note is that in the rumor they said that depending on who won the fight the next challenger would be chosen. I wonder if it would have still been Henderson if Chuck won the fight...

I'll be at a wedding. I hope Sakuraba whoops that ***. I've never really like Gracie. He's always come across as too cocky for his own good. I think it stems from him not even being the best MMA fighter or BJJ fighter in his family.

How can you not like Royce?? After all, he is the main reason we all either watch or participate in mma today. Yes he comes off as a little cocky but you might too if your last name was Gracie and you were one of the founding fathers of MMA. I have to root for him just because he is who he is and I respect the man.
I am looking forward to "the Punk" Josh Thompson fight again.

I do like Royce, I respect him with an extreme amount, but I was really looking foward to Lesnar fighting and now that I hear he actually is fighting, then I will probably order it because my girlfriend is out on Vacation and that leaves me alone! Alone time = fight time.
Plus Brock Lesnar's trainer is none other than Royce.

Dynamite was a great show, Brock Lesnar looked great.
Morton got his skull crushed in, he looked horrible.
WEC last night was ok, I wished Urijah would actually fight as a lightweight in UFC, because he is playing with a bunch of little boys in WEC.

Morton refused to take the mandatory urine screening following his loss. He is now unable to get licensed to fight until he does what the athletic commission tells him to do.
Urijah is to small really yot move up to LW. I think they are grooming him and we will be seeing a flyweight division in the UFC very soon. There would be a few guys fighting LW now that could easily make fly so it will be interesting.
Sure Brock looked ok but let's see what happens when he fights someone with a little bit of skill. I would like to see him figth Justin McCully (who I don't like) just because I know Justin is not a great fighter but does have a decent skill set. I think it would be a good fight to watch.

Morton is a joke.
Lesnar vs. MCCulley would actually be very interesting, I would love to see that as a UFN Main Event.
Urijah last night was the first time I have ever seen him fight, and he did not look that good, it seemed like a sloppy fight, but he knows how to finish it off.

I agree with pretty much everything here. Morton did take a **** test before the weigh ins, so I'm curious to see how that's going to turn out. He
Urijah is a 145 punder through and through. He's not going anywhere to fight at 155 for a while.
The guy Brock fought was a joke. I agree too that McCully would be an interesteing match up, just to see where Brock really is. I think he's getting a little ahead of himself when talking about going after titles.

I agree with Brock getting ahead of himself. Who does he think he is going to beat? Randy? Gonzaga? Fedor?? I know as a fighter you have to be confident but be realistic as well. That was his first fight and now he wants to fight the best? How about going up against Jeff Monson, Brandon Vera...or better yet, let him fight Heath Herring. Heath is not a top heavyweight but he has fought alot of the best guys in the world. Let's see how he does against someone that has seen and fought the best and then we, as well as Brock himself, can decide if he is ready to make a push for a title.

Here is the brief story on Morton...

Following his mixed martial arts debut Saturday in Los Angeles, former NFL football player Johnny Morton was indefinitely suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after the 35-year-old from Torrance, Calif. refused to take his post-fight anti-doping test, CSAC Executive Officer Armando Garcia told Sherdog.com.

Morton will not be paid the $100,000 purse he was slated to receive after fighting the Ivory Coast's Bernard Ackah (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=21493) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=21493@@Bernard Ackah)). The former USC Trojan wide receiver fell to Ackah in just 38 seconds when an overhand right dropped him cold to the canvas.

Paramedics attended to Morton in the ring, fitting him for a cervical collar before carrying him out of the ring on a stretcher. He was taken to California Hospital, where Morton's trainer Mike Guymon (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=4015) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=4015@@Mike Guymon)) said he was alert and conscious.

As part of the CSAC's anti-doping policy, Morton provided a sample prior to his fight. Garcia said that sample will be tested.

I would love to have that pay day. $100,000.00 for 38 seconds!!!!!??? I would let someone KO me for that kind of money! I would let Fedor hit me for that cash!

I think you guys are highly underrating Brock Lesnar, this kid was a COLLEGE WRESTLING STUD at Minnesota, so his wrestling skills are no joke, I mean we have not seen his stand up, but he is ox-like strong and I can see him giving a lot of people problems in any organization. Heath Herring vs. Brock Lesnar might be really good, but I would much rather see Jake O'Brien vs. Brock Lesnar.
That would be really good.

I am not underrating Brock! I am just looking at things logically. Yes, I know he has an incredible background in college wrestling and is an amazing athlete. I believe that one fight doesn't prove anythig though.
I think Brock needs to slow down and think about what he is saying before calling out for title shots though. This is not proffessional wrestling where that stuff is acceptable. Fight someone that is respected and win that fight then talk about a title fight.

Agreed, I don't think he should call out players like Randy Coutture or Big Nog, but I think people like Jake O'Brien, Dan Murphy, Justin McCuley, Paul Buentello, Justin Eilers, would be perfect fights for Brock, I am just saying I honestly think Brock might have a real bright future in this sport.

Shogun will get someone easy first, think they might baby him up to populiarity, similiar to Mirko and Rampage.
Honestly, Eddie Sanchez (Who is a good fighter was undefeated before CC) but we all knew that was a horrible mismatch and that Eddie would lose.
Marvin Eastman defeated Rampage a while ago but yet he was really unknown in the UFC, and looked bad against Rampage.
I think Shogun might get possibly David Heath, Sam Hoger, James Irvin, Rob McDonald, Sean Salmon or Elvis Sinosic.
I would love to see James Irvin vs. Shogun to start his career off in UFC, but if James lost he would probably be gone from UFC.

Its going to be interesting

I believe after he lost to Tito (Vitor that is) that he decided he wanted to test the waters elsewhere. He went to Pride and lost to Overeem. The he won one before losing to Henderson. With the acquisition of Pride, we may see him back in the UFC before long.

I have no idea about Terrell. He hasn't had a single fight since 59, not in any organization.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will make his first title defense against PRIDE FC middleweight and welterweight champion Dan Henderson at UFC 75 in London, England, on September 8.
Rampage confirmed the date on CBS 2 (http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_158210000.html) in Los Angeles, California, just yesterday.
Here’s a snip (via MMAWeekly.com (http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=4094&zoneid=13)):
“I have to fight September 8th in London with the champion of Japan [Henderson]. He has the belt that I was trying to go for that I never got.”
Early reports (http://ufcmania.com/2007/05/27/ufc-rampage-jackson-vs-dan-henderson/) indicated that only Rampage’s title would be on the line because the fight is inside the Octagon. However, this statement — and others from UFC President Dana White — makes it seem like it will be a bout that unifies the 205-pound belts.
Henderson was a guest on Frank Trigg’s Tagg Radio (http://taggradio.com/archives/20070607.mp3) just yesterday and mentioned that he would prefer to fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, in front of his family and friends. It looks like that isn’t going to happen.
UFC 75 will be the promotion’s third event of the year in Europe, following UFC 70 in Manchester, England, and UFC 72 in Belfast, Ireland. For the developing (and rumored) UFC 75 fight card click here (http://ufcmania.com/2007/04/22/ufc-75-fight-card/).

More News

KRQE News 13 (http://www.krqe.com/) — a local New Mexico-based television station — reported earlier this week that hometown product Diego Sanchez (17-1) will fight PRIDE FC standout Hayato “Mach” Sakurai (30-7-2) at UFC 74 on Saturday, August 25 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The piece was a voiceover, but I was able to track down the transcript today after a day or so of pestering the good folks at KRQE.
Here’s the full snip:
“Diego Sanchez is ready to return to the UFC stage after suffering his first defeat back in April. Sanchez will has a welterweight showdown on the UFC 74 card in Las Vegas, Nevada, August 25th. He will fight Hayato Sakuri of Japan. Sanchez says if he is victorious he could get a rematch with the only man ever to defeat him … Josh Koscheck.”
At this time, no official word from the UFC or either fighter has confirmed this bout. However, the television station has to be going off of an extremely reliable source (such as Sanchez) to be reporting this news.
Sakurai fights at lightweight (161-pound limit) in PRIDE FC and has been in against a “Who’s Who” of opponents throughout his career.
Caol Uno (win), Frank Trigg (win), Anderson Silva (loss), Jake Shields (loss), Ryo Chonan (loss), Shinya Aoki (win) Jens Pulver (win), Joachim Hansen (win), and Takanori Gomi (loss) to name just a few.
Hopefully, you get the point.
“Mach” also has one appearance in the Octagon to his credit, losing to Matt Hughes via technical knockout (strikes) at UFC 36: “World’s Collide” in 2002.
This is a huge addition to an already loaded UFC welterweight division, and a big test for Sanchez, who is coming off of a serious staph infection and his first career loss at UFC 69.
It is no doubt still fresh on his mind if there is already talk of a rematch after the UFC 74 bout.
Sakurai is an extremely talented and experienced opponent — one that Sanchez cannot overlook. And although Sakurai recently fought at 161 pounds in PRIDE, he is a very big 161 pounds.
Put simply, he will not be undersized as a UFC welterweight.
Unfortunately, most casual fans have probably never heard of Sakurai. But make no mistake, this is looks like an awesome fight … on paper.

I believe that this could be a real good fight. I also believe that if he beats Sakurai he still does not deserve another shot at Koscheck unless Josh drops a fight between now and then.

I forgot all about this until reading it earlier..here is the info on Vitor..

http://www.graciefighter.com/websites/website5/images/news657.jpgDespite being handed a 9-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission following his failed drug test for steroids after the October 21st, 2006 Pride card, Vitor Belfort has ignored the NSAC and fought in England's Cage Rage show.
Fighting anywhere in the world while under suspension in Nevada is considered a slap in the face to the authority of the NSAC and yet Belfort has refused to accept that Nevada has any authority over what a fighter can or cannot do in other jurisdictions. It will be intersting to see how the NSAC responds to this case.

Updated Morton information:

Information released today by the California State Athletic Commission verified that Johnnie Morton tested positive for anabolic agents on his June 2 pre-fight drug test. Morton was part of the K-1 portion of the co-promoted Dynamite!! USA event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. He was knocked out 38 seconds into the bout by Bernard Ackah.

Morton’s test results showed a T/E ratio score of 83.9, which indicates an elevated level of Testosterone. According to CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia, the standard for an athlete is 6. Morton’s test results for “Drugs of Abuse” or recreational drugs have not yet come back.

Following the bout with Ackah, Morton refused to take the required post-fight drug test and was immediately placed on suspension and had his fight purse withheld by Garcia. “I don’t want to hold back his pay,” said Garcia, “but I’m waiting for him to answer the letter I sent him. He received a letter giving him ten days to explain as to why he refused to take the post-fight test. He is on indefinite suspension and I withheld his pay.”

According to Garcia, he is the first fighter in the state to refuse the post-fight test. “It’s a violation of our rules and brings discredit to our commission. No one has refused except him.”

It is unclear yet as to what the result of Morton’s actions will be. The maximum amount that he can be fined in California is $2,500, but revocation of his fighter’s license is a possibility. As for any further action, Morton will first be allowed the ten days to answer Garcia’s letter and once a penalty is imposed, will also have the right to appeal any decision.

Prior to Morton’s positive test results, fighter Tim Persey, who fought on the EliteXC portion of the event televised on Showtime, tested positive for methamphetamine. He was subsequently fined $1,000, equal to 5% of his $20,000 fight purse, and suspended for six months.

Turk I got some sad news in the World Of MMA

Royce Gracie, known to many as the godfather of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, tested positive for Nandrolone, according to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) as reported on Sherdog.com (http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=7908).
Gracie had recently competed against longtime foe and PRIDE FC fixture Kazushi Sakuraba at the much ballyhooed but ultimately disappointing K-1 Heroes Dynamite on June 2.
Gracie is suspended until May 30 of 2008 and has been fined $2,500 by the CSAC.
That price seems paltry compared to the cost of tarnishing both his legacy and his lineage.

And yes Tito would beat Shogun. And No I am not smoking Pot neither [:D] I am just a Bias Tito fan.

B.J. Penn's (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=1307) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=1307@@B.J. Penn)) camp informed Sherdog.com that the 28-year-old Hawaiian would not face Diego Sanchez (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=4824) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=4824@@Diego Sanchez)) in August, though the possibility wasn't ruled out for a later date.

On Tuesday, Sherdog.com cited a source close to Penn and Sanchez who said a fight had been agreed upon for Aug. 25 in Las Vegas and would be featured on the undercard of the UFC heavyweight title fight between Randy Couture (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=166) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=166@@Randy Couture)) and Gabriel Gonzaga (http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=7306) (Pictures (http://www.sherdog.com/news/picture_gallery.asp?f_id=7306@@Gabriel Gonzaga)).

Penn's camp said the fight with Sanchez had not been offered by the UFC for August, and indicated many options are being discussed as far the fighter's future inside the octagon, which includes the possibility of him remaining at lightweight.

Penn (11-4-1) expects to release news of his future via his Web site, BJPenn.com, though no date was given as to when he would make a statement.

I agree completely about BJ vs. Diego. No way Diego could win. He doesn't do anything better than BJ, except cardio.
And if BJ could cut weight the right way, he should be able to dominate teh LW division. I think his major concern with it is the weight cutting. I think he's even said as much in an interview or two, but I could be wrong.

BJ Penn always gasses out, no matter what fight no matter which way he cuts weight, he always gasses out and he always comes up short in most of his fights and gets beat.
Come on, I was the only one who said that Matt Serra would beat GSP, so obviously Deigo beating BJ is not THAT ludicris, no matter how much of a better fighter you are there are holes in everyones game (except for Fedor) and you can get beat in any fight if you prepare wrong.
I think BJ/Deigo fight would be Deigo out boxing BJ and then BJ tries to take him down and submit him gets tired out Deigo gets on BJ's back and pounds him into submission.

ok as far as you picking Serra...the sun DOES shione on a dog's arse every once in a while [:D]
Now, BJ did gas alot...but when he came inot the fight with Jens he looked like the BJ of the early days of the LW division. His new cardio trainer must really be pushing him to get over the lazy hawaiian hump. Alot of Hawaiians are quite lazy, it comes with the laid back "no worry beef curry" attitude. How do I know this....well...my wife was born and raised in Hawaii. I have been there four times (really the only reason I married her...LOL)
I think BJ looks real solid no and I think he knows that his cardio has to change...hence him hiring someone to make him work harder. I how this figth happens so I can prove (well, BJ can...not me) that he is the better, stronger, more skilled fighter.

ha I think Nate Marquardt and Deigo Sanchez are the only two people I actually like from Greg Jackson's camp =p
I just think Deigo if he can find the fire once again could pound BJ into submission. BJ can't just keep juggling his weight that is what is going to hurt him in the long run.
I think Franca/Penn would be a fantastic BJJ bout, but it also has the potential to be boring, and Penn would take the belt with a round 2 submission.
Sherk/Penn is something different, Penn would not want to stand up with Sean Sherk and he def does not want to to go on the ground with Sherk neiether, hands down Sherk is probably the best lightweight in the game, a fantastic wrestler and decent stand-up, I think nobody right now can beat Sherk.

Turk88
07-06-2007, 01:02 PM
Sherk does have holes in his game...his striking is not impressive, he lacks power in his punches...his defense is solid and his wrestling is good but I believe that he can be caught in arm bars..chokes will be tough due to his no neck status.

Plus, he tends to overcommit on punches often which leaves him open to a good solid overhand counter.

Something to note in the interview:
ESPN.com: At UFC 75, Dan Henderson will fight Rampage Jackson. Is this a unification bout or is this just for the UFC title?
DW: It will absolutely be a unification bout. We have to respect Henderson's titles. He knocked out Wanderlei Silva and had the 185-pound championship. When he fights Rampage, they both have belts. Why should Dan Henderson get the UFC title if Rampage can't get the PRIDE titles? It makes one of them the undisputed guy.

I remember it being posted on here that the Rampage/Henderson fight won't be for the Belts. But according to Dana it will be. If Dana is right, it's just more evidence of how he is one of the best owners in sports...

dont forget wanderlei silva VS chuck liddell for ufc 76. i pick silva to dominate that fight, it seems alot of pride fighters are coming to the UFC and dominating. Noguiera, anderson silva, crocop sorta, rampage. i just hope FEDOR comes to the UFC along with Bob Sapp

Funny thing is right when I said that, not even an hour later, my UFC web site confirmed that on Wanderlei Silva's website that he offically announced that on September 22nd he and Chuck Liddell WILL get it on in the Octagon at UFC 76.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wanderlei is going to knock out Chuck horribly.
Wanderlei is going to win the UFC Belt either from Henderson or Rampage does it matter? No. Wanderlei is BACK!!!!!!

The deal between Wandy and Chuck is dead, and it may never happen.

Despite this development, Kevin Iole from Yahoo!Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_ylt=AnqMUUvzBeoMpD3i5ymV_yiUxLYF?slug=ki-liddell071107&prov=yhoo&type=lgns) is now reporting that the deadline to consummate a deal between Liddell and Silva was yesterday (Wednesday) and an agreement was not reached in time.
Iole has, apparently, the latest scoop from White and says the fight is now “dead, probably forever.”
Here’s a snip:
“… White said Wednesday he was told by a member of Silva’s Chute Box team that Silva did not want to fight Liddell. White said the deadline for having the fight made was Wednesday.”
And a snip mash from White:
“This is the worst news I could have possibly gotten. It’s horrendous. I have been trying to make this fight for six years. I have done everything in my power I could do over the last six years to make this fight and it’s still not happening. I just don’t see it happening now. This just happened (Wednesday afternoon) and I’m not sure what we’re going to do. We’re trying to figure it out. It’s not a fun time right now.”

Yeah, Wand's website is saying that they just wanted November instead of September. This is one fight that I will not assume is ever going to hapen until it actually happens. I've gotten excited too many times over this match up, only to be disappointed.

Hey, all the fights start on the feet so Forrest has a chance.

Chris Leben has backed out of the fight against Mike Swick at UFN 11.
Now it will be Johnathan Goulet.

yes, they do start on their feet but Shogun is real good there as well!!

s for Leben, I am not sure why he backed out of this fight. He has a win over Swick already and has bragged about constantly. Now he gets a chance to show what he is made of and backs out??

I dont even know why, but I know that he has not signed a contract extension for the UFC so that maybe why.

It has been confirmed that Lightweight champion Sean Sherk has also failed his post-UFC 73 drug test as well. His opponent Hermes Franca released a statement (http://www.mmanews.com/ufc/Hermes-Franca-Claims-Hell-Be-Failing-UFC-73-Drug-Test.html) claiming he would be coming up positive when the next set of test results were made public by the California State Athletic Commission.

Sherk tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite and has been fined $2,500. He will be suspended until June 26, 2008 (nearly a year). Normal levels of Nandrolone range from 2 ng/mL to 6 ng/mL - where as Sherk was found with 12 ng/mL.

I saw this and I literally threw up. Sean Sherk was the best fighter in that division and he just blew it all away. ONE YEAR he is gone. Now we are probably going to see a Kenny Florian vs. BJ Penn fight (which I think would be incredible) for the lightweight title, this makes me sick considering Sean Sherk is one of my top 3 favorite fighters.
