1st Post and 1st mock...
1 (9): Keith Rivers LB USC
-This pick is totally dependent on Rivers combine performance; speculation is that he runs a sub 4.6 forty, but if he could come out and pull a Patrick Willis at either the combine or his pro-day and run a 4.4ish forty than I think 9 wouldn't be too much of a reach. Finished his college career having played in 48 games, and recording 235 tackles. If he doesn't lay down an extremely fast forty than I could see trading down or taking the best DE available at this point, which Philip Merling, Calais Cambell or Derrick Harvey could have monster workouts and warrant the consideration. Pick is fully dependent upon Sederick Ellis and Vernon Gholston being gone.
2 (47): Lawrence Jackson DE USC
-Jackson's college numbers are better than Mario Williams' were coming out of NC State; Jackson 42 games 181 tackles, 52 TFL and 30.5 sacks; Williams 36 games 175 tackles 25.5 sacks, although playing in the Pac 10 helped in the sack area. Obviously he is not the physical specimen that Williams is plus the fact that he did have an extra season on Williams, nevertheless he had a very productive college career. Either way, he is very talented and could be an excellent player in the not so distant future.
3 (78): Frank Okam DT Texas
-The one thing that cannot be taught is size and Okam is a monster; even with the underachiever tag, Okam is a solid pick; you can teach a guy how to play hard and keep him in a rotation so he stays fresh; Zimmer could get Okam to be the player he could be. Okam finished his career with 49 games played, 156 tackles, 27 TFL and 10 sacks. He is the type of player that could blow up at the next level, even if he doesn't he will upgrade the DT spot.
3* (Steinbach) (97ish) Jermicheal Finley TE Texas
-Depending on how he runs, he could go in the 2nd, he is currently listed as the #3 TE by Kiper. Finley came out after his redshirt sophomore season and recorded 76 catches for 947 yards and 5 touchdowns in two seasons. Regardless of what people think, the TE position is extremely important, look at the four teams in the conferance championships this year: New England- Ben Watson, San Diego- Antonio Gates, New York- Kevin Boss (Jeremy Shockey in regular season), Green Bay somewhat debunks this theory, but they still get some production from the TE and could very well select USC's Fred Davis in the 1st due to Bubba Franks skills diminishing. If we had a TE that could stretch the field, or at least be productive in the redzone, this offense would be that much better; and Carson would have a safety net. Martellus Bennett or Martin Rucker could be available here as well; or Kellen Davis later in the 4th or 5th.
4 (109) Lavelle Hawkins WR Cal
-This is probably too late for Hawkins, who could pull a Craig Davis and sneak his way into the late 1st, but that's the best part of a pre-workout mock you don't know the measurables. Hawkins is a solid WR who could come in and be our #4 this season or #3 in the unlikely event that CJ is moved. Like I said though, this is wishful thinking, I think he will be a 2nd rounder. Recorded 136 catches for 1,748 yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons.
5 (140) Nick Hayden DT Wisconsin
-Hayden has good size 6'5" 310 and could be developed into a good rotational DT. Recorded 132 tackles in 44 games with 21.5 TFL and 10 sacks
5* (Smith- I think) (160ish) Josh Barrett S/LB Arizona St.
-Barrett is a big saftey, 6'3" 230. If his forty time is in the 4.5 range he could be a solid back up for Ndukwe or if he is in the 4.6 range he could be a solid back-up OLB. Regardless the guy is a hitter and would be an excellent ST addition. Recorded 174 tackles in 36 games and 17 PBU with 6 picks. Not 100% sure we will get a 5th comp pick.
6 (171) Jack Williams CB Kent St.
-Another pick that might be a round or two too late depending on his forty time. Williams is a fiery competitor and although short at 5'9" he will not back down. I have not seen this guy since his freshman redshirt season, but he was always fun to watch in practice, and even more fun to listen to as his mouth never stopped whether he was facing other freshman or the senior starters. Oh and he can fly, might be able to return kicks. Could be #4 or #5 this season and sooner rather than later take over the nickel corner job. Recorded 245 tackles in 44 games with 25 PBU and 13 picks; 245 tackles for a CB is huge, an indictment of the team around him, but still impressive. 2nd consecutive year I have called for a KSU corner, last years (Usama Young) turned into a 3rd rounder for the Saints.
7 (202) Patrick Carter WR/KR Lousiville
-Carter is a 6'3" 200 WR who has run in the 4.38 range. Speed and size like this would be a valuable asset, he has also returned kicks which would be a huge plus. Could come in as the 5th or 6th WR and top return man.
7* (KK- I think) (230ish) Thomas Williams LB USC
-Versatile talent that was lost on the depth chart at USC due to the overwhelmingly talented LB corps, started at 3 different spots and even played some FB. Interesting pick, another that might go earlier. Best chance would be as a ST guy early on and would have a realistic shot to earn a roster spot should we lose some of our FA LBs. Recorded 117 tackles in 49 games with 12.5 TFL, 3 sacks and 3 picks.
