An enhancement of the new boards has been enacted today....it is membver reputation point system. If you notice on every post next to the user name on the top right side there are a couple icons...report a post etc. there is now a new icon of a scale....if you like a members post etc. you can click on that icon and award the user points or take them away etc.

It's a way all the members can rate other members of the boards.

hope you like

Thank you both. Apparently, though, not everyone agrees. Of course, I'd go nuts if I tried to please everyone in here (besides, isn't that shannie's job....zing! :ninja:). I have a great deal of fun in here and I hope everyone else does as well. I good way to ensure that is not to take my posts or anyone esle's too seriously. :)

I think this is a great feature, and is more useful than either postcount, or the point system that was utilized on the most recent version of the board.

Someone who posts very infrequently but has quality posts can (should) get a very high rep quickly because people should appreciate it. People who post crap will quickly get the bad rap.

Further, the more often you post, the wider your exposure will be to possible rep votes and those who post most will have the most difficulty keeping their rep high.

Question for the Admins about giving Rep points. I tried giving some to a member but it stated "I need to spread some rep points around first" since I already gave that user one good rep already.

My question is what is the threshold before I can give one to that user again? I gave out I think 2 or 3 reps to other members and still I can't give that user positive feedback...

You need to give rep to 10 users before you can give it to that person again.

How can you tell which ones are positive and which ones are negative?

I was wondering that myself. The only thing I could think of is that for a negative remark the person has to provide a comment. So I'm assuming next to the rep point you would see the negative comment.

But I don't know for sure if that's the case. I take a look at my rep points and I see two green and two purplish color ones, I have no clue what that all means.

Also for the Admins, is their a ranking system for the rep points? Such as 10 rep points mean you get two green dots next to your name, 20 rep points mean you get three green dots, etc...

Joe from Florence

here is how the points for reputation are supposed to work

vBulletin's user reputation system provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on your forums can add or subtract reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts. You can set restrictions on the giving and taking away of reputation points by users in your vBulletin options (http://boards.bengals.com/admincp/options.php?dogroup=reputation&do=options).

User reputations allow the users in your community to tell vBulletin which users are quality and which users are not. And in response to user feedback, vBulletin has the ability to label and reward users for the quality of their posts, as is indicated by their reputation.

You can label quality users by defining reputation levels in the User Reputation Manager (http://boards.bengals.com/admincp/adminreputation.php?do=modify)
. User reputation levels work very similar to user titles and user ranks in that they are an indicator of status that are displayed next to names in posts.

You can reward quality users by creating promotions on the page. Promotions are used to change a user's group memberships when they meet certain conditions, one of which can be their reputation level. Because forum permissions can be controlled with group memberships, a user's reputation in conjunction with promotions can be used to control a user's forum permissions. And so by using a combination of user reputations, promotions, and group permissions, you can enable your community to reward and punish good and bad posters on your forums.

here are how and when a member can use and get awarded points
What reputation level shall new users receive upon registration? 10

Controls how many ratings to display in the user's control panel. 25

For every X number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power. 182

For every X number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power. 50

For every X points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power. 100

How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others? 50

How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others? 0

How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period? Administrators are exempt from this limit. 100 ( i just increased this from 5)

How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? Administrators are exempt from this limit. 1 ( i just decreased this from 25)

So thats how points are scored and what how many you need before you can start accumulating more power with them.

Joe from Florence
08-31-2007, 01:26 PM
This will also help explain why some reputation votes you recieved by some are green, red, or grey.......

At the top right of every post you will see a new icon (http://forums.aspfree.com/images/buttons/reputation.gif) which allows you to provide reputation for that user's post. Clicking the icon allows you to post a comment and state whether you approve or disapprove. As long as you are a full user (i.e. you have 30 posts and have been a member for 30 days), this will then be publicly available for everyone to see and will appear directly underneath the post as a comment. A box titled "Comments on this post" will appear, with a list of users who agree/disagree.

All full users have a certain reputation power. This depends on the number of posts they have, the reputation they have received themselves and how long they have been a member etc. When you approve of a post, you increase the poster's reputation by the number of reputation points you have. If you disagree with their post, their reputation points will decrease by the number of reputation points you have.

If you are not yet a full user (i.e. you do not have 10 posts) you do not have any reputation power. While you can still comment on posts, you will not alter the poster's reputation points.

Every time you agree or disagree with a post, your comment will appear in their user control panel. Each comment will either have a green icon (to show that the user agreed with your post), a red icon (to show that the user disagreed with your post) or a grey icon (where the user has no reputation power so is not a full member).

Everyone starts with 10 points and one green icon associated with their profile. As they gain (or lose) points, their total increases or decreases and the number of green icons next to their profile changes. The more green icons there are, the more the user is respected in the forum.

Ok , so I was really starting to like this REP thing. Good way to let people know you enjoy reading thier posts , like WestTX , etc.
I know you have to take the good with the bad.
BUT , you get someone like SteelyJ who doesnt like the fact I said Thank Goodness for Carson Palmer. So he decides to take away from my REP ? ? ! .
Understood I can do it back to him , but where does that get me ?
Me and Steely got along just fine last season. He was one of the lone Steeler fans with a level head.
Im fine and Im over it , but I am starting to see this isnt going to be pretty as the season goes on.

I have several positive comments in my CP that aren't green. Could that have been a glitch from when you all started this up?No, it's more likely a matter of perspective. Strangely, some people don't consider comments that you may interpret being positive as such. For instance:

"You ******** son of a ***** **** *****! ****** you and the horse your ******* grandmother rode in on! ******* ****!"

To you, that would likely be a heart warming gesture of good will, and I would expect the comment to be green. But to others, "feelings" or "emotions" might get hurt. ;)

I think that has to do with reputation power... for instance a positive vote from a newb (with a 0 rep power) won't affect your rep like a positive vote from an Admin who increases your rep points by asignificant ammount.

Rep power is determined by tenure, amount of posts and other factors.

Ah, that makes sense then. That would explain why when I give someone good rep it seems like they get another green block.

Does it work the same on negative rep?

The reason some of them are grey and not green is because the person that left you the comment did not have enough posts, had not been here that long or has little to no rep...I do believe all those things count.

It's a cool feature, but, at times it is abused, especially over on the smack board.

I have seen that most people that are smacked silly resort to giving the smackee a negative point. Yes, its sad, and it obviously shows that the person has little or no ability to come up with anything clever in return, but it is also abuse of the system. Kind of sad really...

There is a built in safety feature. Your Rep Power is based on your number of posts, join date and your reputation. The higher your Rep Power the more of an affect it has on the person you're giving points to.

For instance if Joe from Flo gives you a positive vote it increases your rep points by 100+

If some newb decides to give you a negative vote it may not affect your points at all.

The moral of the story is: The better your reputation the more your vote affects other posters.

Check the bottom of your User Control Panel to see who gave you those votes and the reasons why, then you'l have your answer,

Eric,

I must not be viewing something right because I can't tell who is giving me the rep points unless they write something in their "reason" message.

What I started doing after some people started doing it to me is putting my name at the end of the comments. That way if I'm giving someone positive or negative feedback they know it's from me.

If people want to give me negative rep points because I docked them, they can go ahead. No need to hide...

I have several positive comments in my CP that aren't green. Could that have been a glitch from when you all started this up?

Yeah like when I was giving you a positive and you thought it was a negative. I found out that the reason it wasn't showing up as green, was because I was in the red. When I'm in the red it shows up as like neutral or something. Now that I'm in the green, it will give you a green bar and some reps points.

Now I find out SteelyJ and CalSteeler gave me like 8 or 9 neg reps. That means they must be giving out a lot of reps since you can't keep hitting the same persons rep without giving out like 10 to other people. Steeler fans are sensitive.

The nice thing is that most n00bs and all negative rep members have little or no affect on your rep either way, since their rep power is so low.

Even the highest rep powers like Steely, Bat and Joe from Flo, only count for half their regular points when they give you negative.

REP-SPAMMING.... i think I saw a 60 minutes on this,.

Something about ebay auction and garage sales promising all the positive rep points you could handle. UNWARRANTED positive rep points, but rep points nonetheless. It was despicable

Then another case.... this kid in his parents basement had like 19 computers and signed up on a message board under as many different names as he could. I am sure you can put the pieces together on this one... it was like a gang of love fest posting between all these "members". Oh I really agree with you on this... you are a genius...I will give you rep points", "Yes, I agree with the guy agreeing....rep points for you". It was a mess.

Member who are posting and asking for rep, or soliciting rep or a "I'll give you rep for rep" etc.. In general, discussing rep in a topic not devoted to a rep discussion (like this one is) is off-topic.

From the code of conduct :
Any communication that contains spam (multiple copies in one area or the same communication in multiple areas).
Material that impedes or otherwise prohibits communication; disrupts the discussion without limitation.

Administrators are going to start docking Rep points if necessary with infractions and warnings.

I will try to give my understanding of it:

I don't see it much anymore, but when rep first came out there was a LOT of "Hey, I gave you rep...how about some in return" and things of that nature. It does not seem to me that is the point of rep points.... so I think they are trying to limit that in a lot of different ways.

Seems to be a common thread to post about "lack of rep" in a manner that seems to suggest that peolpe should give you rep.

Mainly I think they just want us to basically forget ALL about rep unless you feel the need to give it. It shoudl not "consume" your life
