WTF? Since when did lakes have currents, much less a strong current? And wouldn't the current push both people in the same direction?!?

depending on the size of the lake it is common for them to have currents if the water is deep enough...also if the lake is connected to a sea outlet there may be a possibility of tidal currents washing in to the lake.
i hope he is found well, its a sad way to go if not
