Ok let me ask this question why is it that everytime I ever watch any reality show, lets say Amazing Race, Real World ect. when they have someone from Kentucky they show this hick side of every Kentuckian and that is the only side they show. People who live outside Kentucky think that we are low life, unintelligent, brother and sister lovers you name it they think it.
Its disgraceful, people think all Kentuckians have accents, love thier sisters and are dumber than tar.
It's very aggrivating.

I'm from NKY and now live in east/central KY. When I was a kid I wondered the same thing you are wondering now. Then I met actual Kentuckians, not just greater Cincinnatians like me. Fact is, a great majority of them do indeed have accents. It's not a matter of being smarter or dumber, just a fact. People in NKY are the exception, not the rule. Many in Kentucky come from towns with NOTHING. Maybe a gas station, usually a church or two, but little if anything else. They live a rural lifestyle and unfortunately some people who produce shows want to portray them as hicks, but that's how it is. I can assure you with 100% confidence that there are just as many "dumb" people in NKY as there are out in the sticks.

I am also apart of the Northen Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati community, but the whole entire thing is, why on TV do they always show the dumb white trash hicks, but never anybody that is intellectual I guess is the word I am looking for. I know that there are a lot of places that have a church and a gas station, but why can't they show someone from Louisville, Lexington, Florence ect. I mean not all of us are what the TV says we are.. Its an annoying process of what the world thinks of KY. I have people that come into my work all the time and say "I thought you all had accents and shot animals and hung them up on your roof" its very annoying knowing that because of TV I automatically get labeled and judged.

Trust me guys I feel your pain there. When I travel out west many people dont even know that West Virginia is a state. You dont know how many times I hear "How far from the ocean are you?" Oh, and when I go to NYC I get "You're wearing shoes??" I hear it all and it drives me nuts. I cant even watch the local news anymore. It sems like they go out and ask who has the least amount of education and they talk to them or get there opinion on the pressing isssues of my valley or the world. It truly is disgusting.

One thing Kentucky can claim to have is beautiful women. I ask any Ohio man to walk around the Florence mall for a few minutes...you'll consider re-locating.

As JFK has said during his campaign "The most beautiful women in the world are from KY"

People focus on two things: the differences and the negatives. That's why they always pick the biggest stereotypes. It's a shame, but it's true.

Every state has a stereotype and that's the only thing the media focuses on. Being from Nevada leads to people, from other states, thinking that I run a casino and I am greedy for money, and the worst thing, apparently all the women from Nevada are prostitutes.
It's so frustrating how there are a few people who live up to the stereotype and those seem to be the only people that the media focuses on.

For entertainment purposes, the execs always pick flamboyant or eccentric characters to take part in their shows. If they were all fairly normal people like you and me, how many people would honestly sit there and watch it?

That is just it. When casting for something like a reality show you want the viewers to associate with the charachter as quickly as possible. Hence someone from KY has a hill billy persona. New Yorkers talk like DeNiro and the guy from California is blond and surfs.

What he actually said was 'Ich bin ein Berliner' to his audience in West Berlin. This was meant to be a sign of solidarity, saying that he was a Berliner (ie. a thing from Berlin). Unfortunately, a Berliner is also a type of German doughnut.
