The Badlands is the only real answer I have.

Thought about PMing you to see if you wanted to buzz to Devils Lake for a drink and a Shannie hug...but weekend was packed with tortilla cutting fun and slide show making!!! Besides...I didn't know if you would want to!!! [:$]
You go to North Dakota to see family graduate and to ride in the truck for 11 hours...because it is a good time, and to say that you went almost all the way through Nebraska and South Dakota in one day WOOT...and bring home a tractor that is now "yours"!!!
Devils Lake is beautiful when it stops raining and the sun comes out...I say everyone takes a trip there to see it before it gets any bigger!!!

First of all, you know I'd love to meet you in person sometime. Too bad the timing didn't work out. Wasn't a great weekend for me with my fiance's son's birthday. Of course, next weekend, I'm in Fargo for a softball tournament. Too bad you didn't come up a week later; we could have gotten together on your way through. Well, maybe another time.
As for the topic at hand, the aforementioned Badlands are nice, though I'm not much of an outdoorsman. There's some decent hunting & fishing, or at least I've heard. Don't care for either activity. If you prefer mild summers, this is a good place, although the winters can be unbearable with the -30 degree temps (before the wind chill is factored in). You know, now that you mention it, why the heck am I here? Oh yeah, because I have great friends and (soon) a wonderful family here. That's enough for me.

You had me up until the 30 below without the wind chill. I would love to have summers that are not 99% humidity for days on end....

I truly don't get how you guys deal with that kind of cold. I've threatened to move ever further South when our winters hit mid 50s. I guess I am going to have to move to Jamaica after all!

Well, 281 goes right through my hometown of Jamestown. You would recognize it by the abundant construction on that very highway as you enter town. Hopefully things will work out better your next time through. [:D]
As for the -30 degree temps, I won't lie to you....it's not pleasant, but you deal with exactly how you would expect. Stay indoors. If you must go out, dress in layers....lots of them. It actually not as bad as the huge snowstorms that dump so much snow that it's virtually impossible to get around (or even park anywhere near your home), but that happens in a lot of places. Believe me, I'd rather have Vegas' climate that North Dakota's, but even I've adapted.

You're a brave soul to face that kind of chilly music. I've only ever moved south from Ohio, and I've only ever talked about moving south from Ohio. From my current plan/fantasy, Costa Rica, here I come!

I know what you are talking about with those -30 degree temps... i spent two years in northern Michgan... little town of Harvey, about a 10 mintue walk from lake superior.
The days you wake up, the weather man says it's -50 with wind chill, and claims it's too cold to snow, but when you look outside you have about a foot and a half just calling your name before you can leave the driveway.
The winters are terrible, but the summers on the lake were great! Good fishing, swimming, and all that noise! Tell ya though, you never complain about the cold much after you've lived somewhere like there. When the winters here in Utah get down in the 20's I just think back to my days up there, and suddenly 20 seems like a heat wave!

I lived in Minot N.D. from 1977 - 1979 when my dad was in the Air Force. It was great being a kid there. Mountains of snow to play in. But we never had a "snow day". Down here we get a little dusting and schools close down left and right.
What I remember most about North Dakota was it's very flat, no trees, huge rabbits and tons and tons of prarie dogs.

Well crap...we could have had a nice visit while we waited 45 minutes for the darn train in Jamestown Monday night...I wish I would have known!!!
Honest to God...when I said, I think it is about 100 miles to Jamestown on our way there...that was the longest 100 miles I've ever been on in my life...then the train thing in Jamestown on the way back...the only good thing about Jamestown in my eyes right now is that you live there!!!

Yeah, that's Jamestown. The 281 construction should have good results when its finally completed in association with the city's 125 anniversary next year and they're starting to do some nice renovations to the downtown area. It's not too bad for the size, but the trains always seem to be an inconvenience, especially with only one way to get past them without waiting. Oh, well....at least we've got a Burger King. Didn't even have that when I first moved here. [:P]

My EX girlfriend lived in Bismarck so i went there a couple of times, (once in the Summer for just over a month and once in the Winter for a few months) the Badlands are quite spectacular nothing like i've ever seen before and we have some impressive country side here in the UK also Medora was very nice, as for Bismarck i really liked it there, very laid back state as well, would definitely like to go back some day, not in the winter though!
