After reading all the posts in my App St thread , I thought about this .......
I have had these thoughts before and they are always put to rest by bowl games will always be around because there is too much $$$$$ involved.
For the schools , etc . Which is great.
Everyone knows the BCS blows.
NCAA Basketball fans tune in like mad folks ( ME ! ) to watch the tourney every year.
IMAGINE what a team like the Appalachian Mountaineers in a Football Playoff !
They would reek havoc in something like that. Of course the DIV-1 schools wouldnt care for this and there would have to be a rule/way that a team like APP would qualify.
They would have to forfiet there spot in the DIV-2 playoffs probaly too.
It would be awesome to watch them go up against other DIV-1 teams like LSU , USC , Oh St , FLA , etc .
I know this isnt going to happen anytime soon , or ever.
But its sooo obvious that it would be a successful and right way to determine a National Champion.

It's a good intention, but I am against it and here's why: Tradition. I know that USC would do well every year in the playoffs, but taking away bowl game from college football is like taking away the stripes from the bengals uniform. You cannot throw somthing away that has been an integral part of college football ever since Auburn played down in cuba in 1921 (i think). Without tradition, football is just a bunch of thugs hitting eachother in pads.

I totally disagree. And who says you take away the bowl games? There are many situations out there that involve integrating bowl games into a playoff system.
The BCS is flawed and nothing but a playoff will fix that. When things like "strength of schedule" help to determine who pklay for the title then there is a problem. When the title game comes down to people voting...there is a problem. This isn't American Idol. It is college sports and we (football) are the only morons left that do not have a playoff system. Tradition be d a m n e d it is time to do the right thing and let's all sit back and watch some of the greatest football we have ever seen!
Besides, do you hold onto tradition for traditions sake even though it is bringing the game down and making it less pure?

I agree. I'm for scrapping the BCS and returning to the traditional bowl games. Let the polls determine the national champion.

Not going to please everyone. I say college football should mirror the NCAA tourney with the leftovers going to the bowls (football's version of the NIT tournament).

In theory a playoff system sounds great and I am actually all for it, but if anyone thinks suddenly there will be no controversy then you are mistaken. Heck, in college basketball there is a 65 team tournament and there are still people outraged year in and year out about being left out of the tourney.
The playoff system that makes the most sense is an eight team playoff, six going to the BCS conference winners, (IMO no way a playoff will be approved w/o guaranteeing each power conference a representative) and two at large teams. Thus we would have controversy with taking only two at larges, each year some obviously deserving team will be left out.
With all that said I'd still love a playoff just for the exciting games that could be seen and instead of debating between who's number 2 or 3 we will be debating over who's 7 or 8, which would give the system much more credibility. So, in the end we will have an uber exciting month of college football should the NCAA adopt this format.

Damn, looks like I just slammed down.
But in my defense, tradition is a key part of the game. When you think of LSU, you think of their shut down deffense becaue thay have a tradition of that. When I think Big Ten, I think "three yards and a cloud of dust". Now I would be all in favor of scrapping the BCS, but taking away the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl? I would never do that. And besides, think of the athelets. After playing an entire season and then adding on about 2 or three more games, that would cut too far into their already trying academic studies and put less intrest in academics.

I definately dont want to do away with the traditional bowl games.
There has to be a way to intergrate them into the Playoff.
Either into the final round or play a shortned playoff to see who makes it to the Bowl game(s).
And as for the adding more games theory , DIV 1AA does it every year. They seem just fine.

Great post I think this would be fun to watch as some division 2 schools get the chance to contend with the bigger schools.
