Someone answer this for me.
- When we blitz, no matter if it's 7 guys total, it always seems like everyone ends up jumbled into one spot where 5 o-linemen can pick it up easily.
- When teams like the Ravens (and others) blitz, you see all kinds of crazy things going on. Guys coming out of nowhere, multiple guys hitting the edge, etc.
So do our defensive players blow, does our scheme blow, or does our o-line blow so bad that it makes other team's blitzes more effective?

why limit the question to only one of those answers?:hmm:
I would like to see more Blitz like the Ravens and Steelers.
The only problem is that we don't have the player to do it, that is why each time you see the bengal sack a QB it alway the safeties that made the sack not the linebacker or DT, DE.

Great question, one for the ages... no team blitzes worse than the Bengals... and so many times when we finally do get pressure, they blow right by the QB or just barely get a hand on him. Hopefully with Zimmer as DC we'll see improvement in this facet as the season progresses.

:tiger: sounds like a scheme problem to me. Blitzes are "add-on's" in certain defensive looks. Usually LB, CB or safties are brought with blitzes. They can be brought from anywhere at anytime. The problem is trying to disguise it, which brings us back to the scheme....

I think you nailed it right there. Ever watch the Ravens or the Steelers blitz? They do a great job of confusing the qb and oline. You never know who is coming and who is dropping back into pass coverage. On the other hand when you watch the Bengals when they blitz all the of the blitzers are close to line of scrimmage tipping their hand to the offense. I think if the Bengals did a better job at masking their blitzes the more effective they will be at it.

All of the above.

Our O-line *****!!! Period!!!
But then again our D-Line is just too slow!!!
They couldn't compete with half of the top ten college teams!!!
Thanks again, mikey! Your scouting dept is soo-good?

Part of it is scheme, part of it is lack of consistency of the personnel at a given position. If we can stay healthy, I can see our defense slowly doing more and more as the season goes on. Zimmer is starting at ground zero. I'll give him a little bit of time to get his act together, but we should see more and more complex schemes being implement if we have the talent that people suggest. The line needs to stiffen up a little too. If the line can't hold you have to assign help and that takes away your free man.

When our defense takes the field, more often than not. The attitude is just not there, they go on the field draging their tails with the gee I hope we don't get killed deer in the headlights look! Watch the side lines of Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philly, Jacksonville, whoever. Their defenses are over their chomping at the bit, praying to get back in there. Our D runs and hides behind the Gatorade cooler. Our defense couldn't force it's will on most College Teams, they lack the heart, killer instinct, whatever you wanna call it.
So to answer your question it's lack of confidence, more than anything. Linebacker A isn't really sure if he's blitzing or not because he's not sure linebacker B is gonna drop back and cover the under neath route. Linebacker C's not sure if the free safety can tackle the running back so he cheats to the inside and so on and so on!
