View Full Version : TAILGATING! The Bengal Thing and BENGALS VS. Eagles

The Bengal Thing

Here are some details important to the event:

Once again I will be joining up with BigJohnWC to create THE tailgate party of ALL tailgate parties. BJWC brings the "thunder" to this show and everyone should come check it out at least once.

This show has a flat screen TV, beer, blender, cornhole, Bengals gear, beer, liqour, a themed food/beverage spread, media attention and Celebrity appearances.

So far our party has been featured in CinWeekly, and Tailgater Monthly. We have had Adam from Adamsfootballtrip.com spot by, me (The Bengal Thing), and WhooDeyBaby all stop by. There is also an appearance from an up and coming Bengal persona (The hat guy... that is what I call him).

I am sure I am leaving things out, and BJWC will pick up where I left off. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN LOT 1 (if anyone needs directions/cell # .... just PM me

I'll post menu updates here as I get them (both through PMs, emails, and what I read on the boards).

Please, bring some food and beverage and come on down and share with the rest of us. We all eat heartily and sample everything!

Since everyone who comes brings food/side dishes to share, a donation is not mandatory.

However, we would like to encourage that if you can donate, it's appreciated! Any donation of $10 or more receives a Bengal Tailgating Souvenir (different one each week/game), and all the funds from the donations are used to improve & maintain the tailgate ... so we just keep getting better each week! We've got things like an additional power source (to help run crock pots and other goodies) and propane heater (for those chilly winter morning tailgates) on our "shopping list" for the future just to help make tailgating more fun & enjoyable for everyone (and lord knows we need it to be this season, since the team hasn't been doing that much inside PBS!).

You can PM me for my cell # and details as well! Or ask questions here and others can read the answers! LOL

Also, #1 tip from me, if you haven't tailgated with us before ... go to the "Parking Map" on Bengals.com and locate Lot 1 ahead of time. Figuring out which lot from out guidence over the phone is much easier if you have that map to refer to.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and WHO DEY!

No word on "theme" yet ... I've been back-and-forth with computer access thanks to multiple Vet visits. I'll update (hopefully) tomorrow with theme and menu starts...

Also, very good possibility a friend of mine from our gym (another cyclist) and his wife will be joining us. They're from England originally, and this is their first Bengals game (and I'm fairly certain first tailgate).

Does anyone in Cincy even know how to make a Philly cheesesteak? It has been my experience that anyone outside of the Philly area has no clue and tends to make their own version of them.

In fact, I'd wager you'd be one of the most talked about people who stopped by ever!

Well, a Philadelphia native just gave me the basic recipe which seems accurate/direct enough (especially if I use his ingredients and use the method shown to me in Pittsburgh at Kennywood).

I'm still solidifying "theme" but it's looking that will be on the menu .. just for your "challenge" alone ;-)

Ok ... brief comment and my apologies for delays ...

Theme hasn't been finalized (or more to the point wasn't yesterday) because my cat, Columbia, the reason I've been going back and forth to the vet ... passed away yesterday morning. Turns out she had brain cancer (what cat gets Brain Cancer?!?!). She didn't suffer until the very end (which is a blessing) and she passed on her own (rather then me having to have her put to sleep) & comfortably (on an IV for nutrients and sleeping on a warm heating pad). That's all I could ask for. However, those events kind of shut me down yesterday.

Give me until about noon or 1 and I'll have the theme solidified up ... Melissa's out of town for this tailgate, and she's usually the main motivator on her family's end so it takes a little bit longer. LOL

Here's a list from a Philly native that might help inspire some ... Most of these, as listed, are the "brands" (like Skyline here) that Philly is known for. Something tells me we could make some decent local embellishments:

TasteyKakes - authentic Philly desserts- http://www.tastykake.com
Soft Pretzels – with cheese and/or mustard
Philly Fries – Cook fries… shake in ol bay seasoning serve with ‘runny’ beer cheese
Goldenberg's Peanut Chews -> http://www.justborn.com/peanut-chews
Herr's Potato Chips -> http://www.herrs.com
Pork sandwiches -> we could put shredded pork in a crock pot
THE HOAGIE -. Slice a fresh Philadelphia Italian roll. Sprinkle lightly with oil. Then add shredded lettuce, onions, your sandwich fillings, and sliced tomato. Finally, sprinkle with oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. A Philadelphia hoagie normally contains cheese in addition to the specified filling. So, for example, a roast beef hoagie contains roast beef plus cheese. The cheese is normally sliced provolone. If you don't want cheese make sure you say "No cheese". Pickles are almost never used in a Philadelphia hoagie.

I think I am going to go with a Terryaki chicken hoagie (with provolone or swiss). That may be "hoagie overload... since the philly cheesesteak is similar, so I will try to come up with a back-up as well.

I have also been trying to think of a way to do sweet potato french fries and apple butter (I know apple butter was a theme on many a philly food site), but I am not sure how I would keep the fries warm and crispy.

I know when Joe wanted to keep his cheese dip warm, he'd use a foil dish on a metal rack, and kept it over a small flame (like a buffet line would).

The flame is for the table while it's sitting in the 40-degree weather ... we can most likely reheat them up when you get there in one of the grills.

Although, remember you the last game, I'm not certain having you near an open flame is that wise a decision.

hahaha

I want the fries to be crispy and crunchy.... we'll have to see if I can swing it some how.

I should be fine until AFTER the game.... there won't be open flame then.

I am fine until after I empty my flask into my coke! hahaha

I was seriously wasted though

I like to say I a lot

Sounds like you guys have a good list going. At least the Eagles fans should stay away. I'd imagine they will be looking for something different while in your town. I will be trying to grab some Skyline while I am in town. I am going to stay away from what I can get at home anytime.

Were you able to get a hold of the TastyKakes or Herrs chips? I didn't realize that the peanut chews were a local thing. I don't think I've seen one in about 15 years. I suppose if you really want to provide your tailgate with local area food, get some scrapple. I personally do not eat it, but since your tailgate starts in the am and scrapple is generally considered breakfast food, why not give it a shot? It is probably the easiest thing to cook and you can throw it on some bread to make a sandwich. I'd love to see some folks try that for the first time.

Scrapple is somewhat like Goetta..... we had Goetta at one of our other tailgate parties. If I find a recipe I may see what's up with it. I need something to make in the slow cooker though.... at least that seems to be the easiest way

Slow cooker for Scrapple? Nah, just slap it down on a pan and cook it. You need to slice it like in this photo and then try it with syrup or ketchup.

Won't be doing it for this tailgate, sadly, since I don't think the current bar has the ingredients and adding to the bar isn't in this week's budget. But still a trip to read the name!

This is tailgate territory with LIMITED space and a 2 hour drive. BJWC has offered up the use of his grill, but it would be best if I can make it and keep it warm... then only "reheat" as necessary

Doc is an idiot. Tailgating is part of the experience. Not just the NFL but any experience, I'll tailgate for just about anything. I tailgate/camp for 3-4 days at NASCAR races.

Hell I'd tailgate before mass on Christmas Eve in the parking lot if I could.

If you are going to the games you have to tailgate. This year I bet more people look forward to the tailgate than the actual game. You have to be crazy to show up at 12:30, sober to watch this season.

OK ... several replies at once ...

YES, that was me on P-Doc's show last evening. P***** me off with his "Why in the world would anyone freeze to tailgate and eat burnt meat..." comments. Unfortunately, I called in as I was rushing to the sports bar to meet up with friends and drink, so my thoughts weren't the most coherent. Although, in the list of things that TICK ME OFF, he hung up on me before making his final comment towards me (which was a bit of an insult) ... ironically, his last comment was something in regards to "standing around in 20-degree weather..." which I was never given the opportunity to reply...

...That we just bought a 200,000 BTU Propane Portable heater! Ready made campfire! Here's hoping I don't blow up the tailgate. LOL We just set it up and tested it outside. GOOD TO GO! (although I made the purchase a little ahead of the donations making it truly "easier" ... since the weather mandated that we kind of needed it).

Eh ... I'm not freaking out about getting enough. Make things work as we have to. Plus, got another fun "trinket" for this week ... had a tough choice between two, opted for this one since I was pretty sure at least one tailgating person this week had the other. It can always be used next time. LOL

Although ... while at the store checking out the heaters ... we did discover the my Driver's Liscense is expired! WHOOPS! Not a major deal (only a couple days ago), except that I leave town (flight leaves Dayton at 945 am) Monday morning ... and the rental car on the other end is in my name with me the only driver. You gotta be careful about accepting money when alcoholic beverages are involved. The authorities construe that as selling drinks without a license among other things.

Very interesting......

I think we might be covered as the donation is for the "Bengal Trinket" that is passed out when you hand the money over.

BJWC may need to look into this.

I would have NEVER even thought of this kind of stuff

The BATF rarely loses if they decde to pursue something. I was shut down working as a bartender by them once because our happy hour drinks were being sold for less than what it cost to make them. Best advice is to keep your donations on the down low.

Thanks for the heads up, although I'm not too concerned about the "donation" risk ... here's why...

#1 The concern is the "alcohol" ... well, 99% of the people coming bring their own alcohol. Surprisingly, with the exception of WDB pouring Bengal Bombs, there's been very little alcohol being shared/passed around. In fact, the only one that's been shared has been personally brought by guests of the tailgate (not the person/party who is collecting the donations).

#2 The trinket helps out quite a bit because it blurs the line considerably.

#3 Everyone brings food and alocohol, this is not a "community pool" of money for refreshments. We did this for reasons UNRELATED to the fine issue, but it's a nice coincidence. In fact, the one time (before Thing started partying with us) that someone offered to buy a shot of Jack from our bar I asked him to keep his money. The pitch-in/donation is for improving the tailgate (that's publicized on these boards and I have receipts for what I've bought with it).

#4 The donation is encouraged, not mandatory. No one has to (and there have been guests at every tailgate since Thing & I have been partying together who didn't bring a menu contribution OR a donation, and we've said nothing negative towards them).

I'm fairly certain we're covered across the board.

WHO DEY!

PS Thanks to all who came by and to all those who contributed food or donations! I think the heater worked out well. It was great to see everyone! Sorry I haven't said thank you earlier, I'm still in Orlando getting ready to hit a sports bar for tonight's game.

WHO DEY again!
