Seeing how Bass is my primary instrument, I thought I'd start this thread. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:
Paul McCartney
John Paul Jones (Zeppelin)
Jaco Pastorious (Weather Report)
Stanley Clarke (Jazz)
Flea (Red Hot Chilli Pepers)
Colin Greenwood (Radiohead)
Victor Wooten
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
Leland Sklar (session payer)
... and of course Bootsy Collins!
Honorable Mention:
Sid Viscous (not really, he stunk but I had to add 1 punk rocker)
Stu Sutcliffe (Beatles original bass player, couldn't play a lick but here for the pop culture reference...)

When I was a teenager I went to see KISS and the hair band that opened for them had an amazing Bass player who performed a solo that left me stunned. However I can't remeber the name of the band or him. [B]
Gene Simmons had a solo that was not good and all of us in the front started booing until he shot fire about 10 feet over our heads. We all had a little more respect for his performance after that. [:$]

Flea. The Chili Peppers' instrumentalists are overshadowed by their eccentricities as people. All three of them are great, and would probably be a sick group without Anthony's goofy lyrics They are professional musicians in every sense of the word and can hang with just about anyone. I saw them last year and man, can they jam.
Les Claypool
Johnny Greenwood(I love the end of the song "Optimistic") good call, Bat.
John Paul Jones
Jaco
Bela Fleck
Matt Freeman (of Rancid) for a guy in a punk band he really goes off. Very Impressive.
Sting
Stefan Lessard(Love or hate Dave Matthews, he's a talented guy.
Geddy Lee

Yeah, you meant Colin Greenwood (Jonny plays guitar), but I feel ya. "Airbag" from OK Computer is one of my favorite basslines. His timing on that song is off the chain!

I've seen them six or seven times. They seem to tour constantly. I've met him once, but I was like 19. He told me stories about getting messed up and playing steel guitar with Al Jourgensen from Ministry. He also told us about an incident where they ran into Marilyn Manson in a bar and started making fun of his punk a**. Very personable, down to earth guy. I last saw him at Lollapalooza last summer. It was funny b/c all of the old people like me (old as in 30 which is old for that festival) were rocking out to the Reverend while all the youngsters were out watching the other bands. They never disappoint and I even managed to convert a kid that works with me. The Reverend sure is showing his age, man.
