Yeah,the acceleration of the signing bonus is partly offset by the fact that they aren't paying his salary anymore. It would eat $1.7 mill of the Bengals cap this year,but it would also free up $5.5-$6 million against the '10 cap. Either way,I don't see the Bengals cutting him until after the draft. Dexter Jackson could be another one that's gone,as well as Chris Perry. Not to mention axing Willie,Rudi,Deltha,and Jeremi last year.

Something will get done before 2010,count on that. The owners don't want a cap free league,and the players don't want to wait 6 years to become UFA's. You'll have RB's drafted in the 2nd-3rd rounds that'll be Pro Bowlers,but all used up by the time they hit their 7th season and having never hit 7 figures in a season before. Major poison pills on both sides of the equation.

The issue with the cap hit,is that it's the proration of Levi's signing bonus. He's gotten his money already,it's just that NFL rules allow the signing bonus' cap # to be spread out over mulitiple years. I still think it's pretty unlikely that MB will cut Levi,simply because of depth issues and the faint possibility Levi could bounce back.

They need a left tackle if they don't think Whitworth or Collins can do it because Levi Jones' future is cloudy with issues revolving around injury. Making him even more expendable is that they could cut him and not feel much of an impact on the salary cap because his '09 salary is close to what the bonus acceleration would be.

I wouldn't say he is 100% gone,but I do feel that he will be battling Roland and Kooistra for a roster spot come TC. You figure that if the Bengals draft their starting LT in the 1st,then Collins probably moves to RT. Then the Bengals are in a position where if that rookie gets hurt,the only other two guys capable of playing LT in a pinch,Collins and Whit,are starting at other positions and you get a massive line juggle. Or,if Levi is reasonably healthy,you can keep him for another year and have a true LT for depth and not have to turn your OL inside out if the starter gets hurt. There is merit in keeping him if he can recover.

Perhaps. But he has been recovering since 05. We are paying him a lot of money to sit on the bench. A lot of back ups in the league played better than him last season. If healthy sure. But thats too big of a ? for me.

Levi is not going anywhere unless someone offers to trade a decent draft pick for him.

The soonest we would release him would be after mini-camps and we'd already found his replacement through the draft.

I could see Dexter Jackson, Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, just to name a few.

I think keeping Levi for one more year while helping to groom the rookie LT would be the best case senario. This would provide depth and pro-bowl experience at the LT spot. I hope Levi is mature enough to actual perform to this role; like Andersen accepted last year before he was cut.

Actually keeping Levi would just use up a roster spot that could be used on a player to develope for the future.

Levi has not had a healthy season since '05.

No, this is wrong. $1.7 million hit was what would have been the case if we'd cut him in 2008. This year, additional dead money of $3 million budgeted for 2010-2012 flows into 2009, but we save on Levi's $3 million salary.

I thought that cuttng a person before certain dates and any roster bonuses are due simply makes dead cap money, money that can't be spent, but stays in the team's pocket. I am kinda surprised that we don't see more of this so the team doesn't have to pay out money and keeps the difference.
