Jared Gaither has enter the supplementary draft. With Big Willy and Bobby ageing and the importents of the Oline, he could be our new Backup Oline man when Stacy Andrews leave after this season. I think he is worth a third round pick.

I just read the story ESPN wrote about him. He looks like he could be a solid player. With the problems our OLine he might be worth a look. However I'm sure you'll get this a lot, people were really frustrated at losing our 3rd in this past year's draft. Granted Brooks looks to be worth it, however for Gaither a 3rd might be too steep. Besides, he's already got scouts drooling, he will likely be gone before he gets to us. Unless he falls into our lap like Brooks did.

Gaither To Enter NFL Supplemental Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland junior offensive lineman Jared Gaither has decided to apply for entry in the 2007 NFL Supplemental Draft, head coach Ralph Friedgen announced Thursday.

"It's a decision he's put a lot of thought into," Friedgen said. "He's expressed a desire to get his degree, but I think the opportunity to make a living and the chance to be successful at the next level was a deciding factor.

"We wish him the best of luck and hope he achieves success in the NFL and in life."

The 6-foot-9, 350-pound Gaither played in 23 of 24 games, including 17 starts, in his two seasons. He started nine games at right tackle last season and eight at left tackle in 2005 when he replaced Stephon Heyer, who missed the year with a knee injury.

"This was a decision I came to after sitting down with my family and reviewing my academic situation," Gaither said. "I felt my best option now was to enter the Supplement Draft, though I would like to come back and get my degree."

Gaither is three years removed from high school, thus eligible for the NFL Supplemental Draft. He played one season (2004) at Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) before entering Maryland.

Teams picking a player in the Supplemental Draft forfeit their corresponding pick in following year's NFL Draft.

The NFL Supplemental Draft is scheduled for July 12.

The only problem is that he is currently suspended from the team for off field problems. I'll do some more research to find out what type.

More info on Gaither.

He only played one year of football in high school.

He played one year at Hargrove Military acasemy.

He started 8 games as a freshman at Maryland and didn't allow a single sack. He was named 3rd Team All-American by one analyst.

He started 9 more games last year as a sophomore. He was on the Lombardi Award watch list for '07 before he declared for the draft.

His biggest problem seemed to be grades. he was suspended one game for violating "unspecified team rules", but has no history of arrests.

people were really frustrated at losing our 3rd in this past year's draft.

We never "lost" a pick. In fact we got a huge bonus in getting to use a draft pick a year early. Just like getting $1,000 today is worth a lot more than getting $1,000 a year from now. In trade value a fourth round pick in '07 is worth a third from '08.

I say draft him to play RG and move Williams to center. We would have the biggest line in the history of the NFL.

I tottally agree. Having Brooks last year may not have contributed to the Defense then, but I am pretty sure it have helped Brooks getting comfortable with our system.

I'm not saying we didn't get something in return. However, come draft day, we still didn't have a 3rd round selection, and that bummed a lot of people out.

* move Bobbie Williams to a position in which he has no prior game experience (regardless of how well Ghiagiuc does this year) * move Ghiagiuc to backup and figure to lose him in UFA the following off-season The net of this move would be to give up an early draft choice and two above-average players in order to take a guy who will be moved to another position becasue his best position is currently being manned by a guy who hasn't missed a game in several years and states that he wants to play 3-4 years before retiring. That makes absolutely little sense to me.

I wasn't really serious about moving Bobbie to center, but I still wouldn't mind having Gaither.

Willie hasn't missed a game in 100 years, but that doesn't mean that he will be able to play forever. Just because he is under contract another 4 (?) years doesn't mean he will last that long.

Levi is coming off TWO knee surgeries in the last year. I know they say he will be fine, but I heard the same thing about Peter warrick. Warrick probably ruined his career by trying to come back and play to soon in a failed attempt to make the playoffs. Levi may have done the same thing.

Andrews may be to expensive to sign as a back up next year. He has never played that great, but teams are in love with his size, athleticism, and blood line.

I'm not sure if he is worth the risk, and who's to say some kid in college won't emerge during the next season as a top tier prospect for the Bengals to draft. I mean, there is a reason this kid is in the supplemental draft in the first place; why waste a '08 pick on a kid with off the field and classroom issues. I'm still not sold on the Brooks pick, with a 3rd rounder this year we could have taken a defensive player in the 2nd round and still got a quality back in the 3rd. I know Brooks has a big up side, but he hasn't developed it yet and getting him early in the supplemental draft was supposed to speed up that process. I hope we see the return on our investment this year.
In my mind, why waste a pick on such a small group of players with problems when you can wait until the '08 draft and pick from a much lager pool of talented players with or without character issues.

I wouldn't have a problem with the Bengals entering a 4th or 5th round bid on Oliver or Gaither. To me, a 4th or 5th round (when we'll have compensatory picks) are spending money. If we can get some great talent of a low price I'm all for it.
However, we'll see what happens Thursday.
