View Full Version : 2008 NFL Draft
What position do you think the Bengals will go after in the first round?
I'm really worried, these are points that I personally believe the Bengals will be weak at.
DE Justin Smith won't be here
DT Need a good balanced DT
LB Lack of real depth
WR Lack of depth beyond #3
CB Deltha O'Neal may not be here next year, which means the Bengals need to find a sleeper CB to play behind JoJo and Leon Hall
OL Big Willie may not have much more time left in him, I'm not worried about his age, but his injuries.
TE Possibly? Assuming Daniel Coats isn't good enough.
No need for SS, Chinedum Ndukwe is a stud, he will do great when Dexter Jackson is gone.
Possible need for FS. Not sure how long Madieu Williams is here(he's actually one of my favorite players on D) I think he's great against the pass but he needs to work on his tackling skills, I'm quite tired of him getting stiff armed.
Some may think we will draft an RB, that's just ridiculous though. Rudi Johnson, Kenny Watson, Kenny Irons, Chris Perry, enough said.
Many upgrades needed, I think we require a big name D player or we may be :thumbs down: on defense for another year.

I think they need DL-DE-LB in that order in the draft and then BPA after the 3rd round.

The first round pick should be the best available player at ANY Defensive position. With the POSSIBLE exception of CB and a pure MLB (Ahmad Brooks will be the man). But if a CB on the board was the best player by far, take him. I would take a college MLB that could be moved to SLB, like Laurinaitis.

Here's a thought re FS. Madieu has good cover skills, but has not shown me he can tackle. Leon Hall is probably our best tackling DB right now. If it were me I would have Leon put on 10 pounds and move him to FS, and switch Madieu to CB.

That's something I've thought since game 1 about Leon, he plays like a natural safety(He's always, and I mean ALWAYS around the ball. He already leads the team in INTs)
in a couple of years his coverage skills will be better though.

Maybe a Malcom Jenkins? ;)

In order of need assuming Thurman and/or Pollack can return and be solid
DE, unless they get Smith to a reasonable contract then DT is more important.
DT, Peko is pretty solid and could be better with talent next to him
TE, the offense needs a first day caliber TE that can #1- catch and run quick routes and #2 block efficiently.
OL, Willie is probably done. Whit or Andrew could do very well here, but the depth is taking a real hit and who know When Levi starts to really break down. After this it gets murky b/c who knows how healthy Irons and Perry are going to be and is Rudi's effectiveness over.
The LBers could be in good shape if Thurman is in the picture, but I'm not sure Pollack will ever be the same physically and mainly psychologically to play NFL football.
Also, there is a whole other game to be played on draft day . A first round talent may fall into your laps of a position less needed while you were eyeing just a solid second round a more needed position. The position of more need may have solid talent in the next round that is not really much of a drop off.
We have extra picks this year so do we go after more guys ( hoping to find gems) or use a couple to move up with and get an extra second round talent. I say the latter.

obviously the front seven need to be fixed...this team gets NO NO NO pressure on the qb...we need to address the probably departure of justin smith, lack of depth at the linebacker...our defense will be a lot better if we can fix the front seven
i like DE or DT first round
Linebackers 2 &3 round
then after that look for best available player but focuse on o line, a reciever, or any d help
