Rumors are flying that Griese is about to be cut. He would definitely be better than any of our current backups.
I say try to sign him.

Probs is better than J.T but don't see it happening after bringing a former starter and having mini Palmer

I know JT isn't great but I don't think Griese is much of an upgrade Last year JT had a 73 rating and Griese has a 69 rating. Griese also has only has a QB rating over 80 three times; 2000-10 games 102 rating, 2002-13 games 85 rating, and 2004-11 games 97 rating. Also the last three years he has thrown more picks than TD's. IMO he is overrated!

Just the stretches of good QB rating you threw out right there make me a much bigger fan of him being our backup than JT. Let JT be third string and put little bro on the practice squad.

Yeah, we need a halfway competent backup. Griese is starter potential and has some leadership qualities, but we have already really been spending and I doubt we'd spend anymore. I mean I like Griese but why go out and get JT if we're not gonna need him?

Yeah, but that was only 5 games and he didn't have our receivers to throw to.

I don't think it's important to invest in a good backup until the rest of the team is good enough to compete *without* Palmer...(based on our off season we may already be there)
However, until that's proven...........a good 2nd stringer versus an average 2nd stringer won't make much difference.

heh :smirk:
but on a serious note I think it'd be kind of a pointless move, our season lives and dies by Palmer and there isn't enough of a talent differential to justify signing Griese IMO

You know, I'm sure they said the same thing in Tennessee when Vince Young got hurt. Who knew Kerry Collins would sweep in and take them into the playoffs? Never doubt the legitimacy of a solid back-up. Actually vince went crazy...

I hear there is an unemployed QB down in Mississippi, working out with High School kids. Maybe we should take a look at him.

Thing is...he said he'd only play for Minnesota if he came back. Guess, he wants to rub it in the Packers face two times a year and show them that he can lead a team to the Super Bowl still.:sarcasm:

Pass on Griese.
If Palmer goes down, the season's likely gone anyhow. Some desperate team, Minnesota, Tampa, will make it a bidding war we'd best avoid. Bengals have been active enough in free agency.
Prefer they toss the extra cash into getting Hood into stripes than chasing down Griese.

Better than JT but the Bengals won't do it.

My biggest worry is carson going down, we need a quality backup like a few other teams have. I continue to her that if carson goes down our season is over. I think it would a smart move to get a former starter to backup carson a good former starter, it would make us a better team.:tiger::rock on::tiger:

I agree and he probably wouldn't command much money. Griese has been good when he has a good team around him.
Regardless, if people want to throw in the towel if Palmer goes down, why have a backup QB at all?
JT and Jordan have done nothing.
With our D this year and having Benson early, everything is NOT going to depend on the QB play.
I think Ocho is planning on springing a big surprise this year to shut everyone up and get his face back on TV. Coles will take pressure off him, Henry will be here for a full year, Simpson and Caldwell will no longer be rookies, Utecht is healthy, we will have a real FB and the rookie TE can catch better than prob any TE we have had in a long time. That is a lot of targets so there is much support.

Isn't this the same guy who got sacked by his own dog and wound up on the injured list? And you thought Scott Mitchell was a stiff...

I wouldn't mind it, but I think the coaches are happy with our backups.

I took that as a Ryan Leaf reference? Wasnt he doing that?

Griese would certainly be an upgrade from O'Sullivan. The Bengals have plenty of cap space to sign him, though I'd be surprised if it happened.

Kerry was successful because he is a back up that plays within his game. He does not try to do too much and does not try to win games by himself. Vince was not a leader so Kerry being successful there was not a huge stretch since I would not be shocked that most vets on that team had more faith in Kerry than Vince.
