Man I hope we didnt jump the gun on Dusty Baker.
I was thinking of him in CIN after the talk began of George letting him go.
I said something about getting Torre in the offseason thread after we hired Baker.
Wait and see what the Yanks did.
I still like the move by Wayne K.
I just wish we could have made an offer to him.

I agree, the I hope the Reds giving it to Baker before Torre was freed doesn't bite them in the arse.

Guys, you've got to be realistic here. The Reds got Baker for about $3.5M per year. Torre turned down $5M plus performance bonuses (including an option for another year). He's spent 12 years managing the team with the highest payroll in the league. The chance of Torre becoming the next manager of the Cincinnati Reds would have been extremely slim to begin with. As it is, I believe we're fortunate to have Baker and delaying in signing him for some minuscule chance to get Torre could very well have resulted in getting neither.

But I dont think Torre's decline of the offer was as much about the money as it was the length of the deal.
Not that he deserved a longer one , just I think he is looking for more than one plus an optional. He could get a longer deal elsewhere.
Im sure Joe is doing fine in the pockets.
Plus , he has to be burnt out on NY. The team , the players , the media.
This is all just speculation of course.
You never know 34. The Reds manager job is high profile in my mind.
And Wayne K. has showed the willingness to do what it takes get good players in here.
Yes it was a tiny bit of hope , but thats what I live on as a Reds and Bengals fan.

Aw, I'm going to miss seeing the big guys face associated with the Yanks.
I agree with 34, the Reds wouldn't have been able to pay Torre want he wants..or probably deserves, man that would have been sweet to get him.
I think the Reds are on the rise and the new manager gets to take complete credit for it. maybe that would have appealed to Torre.

You also have to understand, that Baker would have probably been offered teh job in New York. heck, I think that's why we jumped the gun a little, was to avoid a bidding war w/New York, keeping Baker on the market for at least another month as NY figures out who they want.
FAct of the matter, Torre wasn't coming here, he's going to go to a place where he can get paid, and get financial security, and the way Bowden likes to "handle" money and contracts, I wouldn't be surprsied to see him signed to a 5 year 50M contract in Washington.
