View Full Version : Marvin on the hot seat!

Okay, first off, YES, I know this is pretty much SOS (same old s***), but it's the off-season, dang it. I ran into this article on the Steelers board and found it kind of interesting. Plus it's the off-season, dang it.
So, if the Bengals do poorly this season, are people going to be pointing more fingers at Marv, or will the defense still get the brunt of the blame? I've been saying this all along, and Bengals fans will do well to remember - you can have a pro-bowl QB and outstanding receiving trio, but if the team doesn't win, it means nothing in the end. Not only that, the team won't make it far until Marvin finally decides to come down hard on his team's behavior. No Marvin, laying the blame on the police doesn't help. [:P] Really, to me, the only person on the team who's tried to actively play the role of role-model is Palmer. Chad had his opportunities to speak out against his teams behavior, and he blew it (for those of you who still criticize Ben for not making a PSA on riding with a helmet). Palmer has said it himself, your team just lacks discipline, and that's one reason why you find ways to "Bungle" games. So is finally going to be the year your team 'turns things around', or will it be a repeat of last season?
Now hopefully, Marvin won't come down hard on his team this year, and your team will continue to screw up. [:P]
The other reason I posted this was because of all coaches, Tomlin didn't make the list! Is this guy even aware that Cowher's no longer with us? [^o)] Some people...

Marvin on the hot seat?! The man is like Moses in the 'Nati, and the Bengals haven't had a losing season since he took over. A little soft on the players? I don't think so. He is generally harder on the players than the commissioner is.

Marvin has been as hard on the players as the NFLPA will allow him to be - it's not his fault his hands are tied. The NFLPA wouldn't let you fire a player for non performance issues last season, if they had, I'm sure Henry would have been gone.
I think the playoff season of '05 bought him a few more years. But, if he starts to have too many season where he doesn't make the post season, he might be gone.
Then you bring in the "Jimmy Johnson" rule - before you fire a guy, who are you going to get that's better? If they fire Lewis, who are you going to hire that's better than he is?

If we underperform this year, Marvin stays but the DC will have to go. I haven't been this happy with a Bengal coach since Sam and i don't want Marvin going anywhere. Since the Steelers are copying our offense we'll go ahead and copy their owner and keep Marvin through thick and thin. The players like him and he's devoted.

The offense you copied from the Colts?
Secondly, we're not copying your offense - to do that, we'd have to have a couple deep threat WR's, and we don't. We're going to go with more of a short passing game.
But I am in favor of you copying our defense. I've said here before that your defense should be more aggresive.

Come now everyone around here knows who the true origonator of the no-huddle is. We've all heard the infamouse marv levy/sam wyche 15 yard no-huddle penalty story. The NFL is a copy cat league so i don't hate the Colts when they bite our style. I'm just glad Carson doesn't flail around like Peyton.
As far as Copying your defense, that really can't happen, we don't have the personel to run a 3-4. We have a few guys who would maybe make decent 3-4 linebackers (brooks, hartwell, jeanty, henderson, maybe odell on the inside) but no one for the D-line. Maybe in the future Peko could become a NT but i doubt it. Honestly i like the 4-3 better but any defensive scheme can work if your players are smart and talented.

Don't see it....Marvin being on the hot seat. The writer is grasping at straws.Lewis is loved here. He's righted the ship. The most that will happen is maybe a new "D" coach. Marvin didn't hesitate to put the boot to Frazier. I suspect the one on a short leash here would be Bresh. No one else.

Now this is guy will be on the hot seat if another 30th ranked defense happens. At least I hope they clean house on the Defense staff; that is after next season of course. Besides Chuck plays way too soft on teams like the Patriots; you never want to go into zone with Brady at the helm.

Agreed. If Chuck B. doesn't show marked improvement this year he has to go. He got another year because of all the injuries, but this year will decide his future with the team.

The only hot seat Marvin is on is the heated seat in his car.
I am not worried about the teams attitude. People seem to forget that most of these guys are just now maturing and coming into the realization that talent alone does not win championships.
You will see a more mature and focused Bengal team take the field this year. Heck, there is even talk about how mature and focused the rookies are.
If I were a Steeler fan (shudder) I would be more concerned with fielding a rookie head coach than throwing stones at the competition.
We may struggle a little bit early in the season, but watch out down the stretch as this team starts to gel and come together. This will not be a repeat of last year!
I think history is about to be made. Marvin has a plan and I believe that Mike is content to let Marvin take the team and run with it.
I do not go into this season with Bengal colored glasses on. If there is a problem on the D I firmly believe that changes will be made to the coaching staff.
No my friend, these are not the Bengals of old and you would be well served to recognize that fact. You see, this team is going to be a thorn in your side for many years to come!

Marvin is under pressure but to say he's under more pressure than any other HC in the league is idiotic. He's not even under the most pressure in the division. I know I'm not the only one reading the rumors of Cowher becoming the next HC of the Browns. This is how the list should look:
1. Tom Coughlin, Giants - Hated by his players plus Parcells (And possibly Belichick) being available puts him on the hottest seat.
2. Romeo Crennel, Browns
3. Jon Gruden, Bucs
4. Jack Del Rio, Jaguars
5. John Fox, Panthers - Panthers have been underachieving plus this could also be a landing spot for Cowher.
Then probably Marvin Lewis.
I don't think Marvin can lose his job after this season. But if the team misses the playoffs this season then next season he will probably be coaching to save his job (Unless he fires Chuck B.). The turn around job he has done so far has earned him at least another two years...

Yeah, because our last two rookie head coaches have been SOOOOO horrible. With Noll winning the SB 4 times, and Cowher making the playoffs his first 6 years straight - tying a record set by some guy named Paul Brown - and walking away with 149 wins, 9 division titles, 2 AFC titles, 4 pro bowl appearances and...what's that other one? Oh yeah...a Lombardi.
You'd be blessed if Lewis was just half as successful as either Cowher or Noll.
All that being said, I think Lewis is a heck of a coach and really turned things around in Cincy. But there's a marked difference between winning for one season, and winning consistantly for over a decade as both our previous guys. Marvin does have a plan, yes. The question is, will it turn things around for your defense? That's your achille's heel - and so long as it is, you'll have an early exit from the playoffs.
Yes, you'll be a thorn in our sides....but it's just your turn. Before you it was the Ravens, before that it was the Browns. The team may change, but Pittsburgh usually ends up on top. Who has more division titles in the AFC that we do? Not just the AFC North...the entire AFC. Does anyone have more than 18? No one in this division is even close.
Are these the Bengals of old? I don't think so. Yes, you found ways to lose games last year that you should have won (grasping defeat from the jaws of victory) but you can believe that the more you get away from that image, the more serious the other teams are going to take you.
This is going to be a good year for both our clubs....everyone is going to focus on Baltimore. No one expects the Steelers to do much because of our new coaching staff, and you'll start this year with that, "Same old Bengals" reputation - and for those reasons I think both clubs will have pretty good years. Both of us make the post season....finishing #1 and #2, Baltilmore #3 and Cleveland #4 but closer to #3 than most think.

Last I checked Chuck Noll didn't do all that swell in his first four years, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt starting over from scratch posting (1-13,5-9,6-8, and finally 11-3).

NFL.com lists the head coaches on the chopping block and here they are........
1. Romeo Crennel...i agree, he is in trouble
2. Tom coughlin.....thought they would fire him last year
3. Jon Gruden...deffinatley....he hasn't had a winning season since his first year in tampa when he won the SB
4. John Fox....I think he shouldn't be in this category....although he has had 2 losing seasons the last 3 years, he's still managed to get that team to some big playoff games
5. Jack Del Rio....I predicted this last year, now the rest of the analysts are picking up on it....I'm hoping he does get canned after this year and Marvin sweeps him up as our D-coordinator....he was Marvin's first choice when he got here but Jack got the Jax job the same year.
6. Joe gibbs...the only way he isn't in DC in 2008 is if he retires himself...he won't get fired
7. Jeff Fischer....if it were last year i would agree, now with vince young i think his career in TN is saved
there is one name that wasn't listed at all.....Marvin Lewis...hmmmmm....could it be that others believe the same thing we know already....last year was a season you throw out because of everything from Carson's injury and all the off field problems to all the injuries the team had....and still finished 8-8 with the toughest schedule in the NFL?
I think so

(Yeah, because our last two rookie head coaches have been SOOOOO horrible. Yea but it took Cower how long to win the Lombardi, what 19 years? Besides you can’t take the success of the past and apply it to the present, trust me I’ve tried. Besides no one was saying your coach’s was on the hot seat after posting their first 4 undefeated seasons. Granted ours weren’t all winning but the fact that they weren’t losing means a lot to those of us who had to suffer through the 90’s
(Marvin does have a plan, yes. The question is, will it turn things around for your defense? That's your achille's heel - and so long as it is, you'll have an early exit from the playoffs.)
Agreed but I addressed this in my post when I said that Marvin would make coaching changes if there is a problem with the D.

I disagree. No one is going to take either team for granted. Because of the Steelers reputation your team will always get everyone’s A game.
I don’t think there is a team in the league that hasn’t taken notice of the way Marvin has changed the culture on this Bengal’s team. They aren’t going to sneak up on anyone because the opposing team took them for granted.
I have been saying for some time that the AFC North is the new black and blue division and all teams around the league will come to regret their schedule when it’s time for their division’s rotation to land in our back yard.
This will always be the best division in football to me. We have a level of competition that rivals any other division in the NFL today and will continue well into the future (short of the Lord’s return).

With Marvin turning around a horrible, but loved (although most wouldn't admit it at the time) franchise he will leave when he is ready. I don't think he will get fired. Look at what he did with the team! He is a very good head coach. I do agree with most that if the defense isn't at least decent this year Chuck is gone, but I am not sure that is what Marvin wants. We must keep in mind Marvin came to Cincinnati as a defensive mastermind, I believe he is more involved in the defense than one might think. You would think any head coach would get heavily involved in the weakest part of their team, after all, it is his responsibility. That being said, I still think Marvin is THE MAN and we shouldn't let last season taint our vision of that. He has done a great job winning with adverse circumstances, like losing his top two young linebackers by the second week of last season.

(No one expects the Steelers to do much because of our new coaching staff, and you'll start this year with that, "Same old Bengals" reputation - and for those reasons I think both clubs will have pretty good years.)

Ghostrider,
(Yeah, because our last two rookie head coaches have been SOOOOO horrible. With Noll winning the SB 4 times, and Cowher making the playoffs his first 6 years straight - tying a record set by some guy named Paul Brown - and walking away with 149 wins, 9 division titles, 2 AFC titles, 4 pro bowl appearances and...what's that other one? Oh yeah...a Lombardi.)
(Yes, you'll be a thorn in our sides....but it's just your turn. Before you it was the Ravens, before that it was the Browns. The team may change, but Pittsburgh usually ends up on top. Who has more division titles in the AFC that we do? Not just the AFC North...the entire AFC. Does anyone have more than 18? No one in this division is even close.)
Again, the past does not guarantee success in the future.

Why should we cut a player that did the same things as a Redskin player Sean Taylor did and only recieved a 72k fine without any suspension? Do you really need cheap recievers that bad for your team or something? Would you prefer to see him as a Raven to replace those slow old recievers?
Tank Johnson resisted arrest, assulted a cop, violated probation consorting with known felons (bodyguard) (in a felony offense),broke probation with over 25 firearms in his home, failed to follow Bears guidance on rehabilitation of drug and alcohol program. If you failed to follow strict orders from your boss that would also be grounds for dismissing too.Besides Johnson was just a back-up for one of their key Players who got injured mid season last year (T.Harris).

As far as all of those 35 cases of DUI in the NFL they should all be banned from football, and Leonard Little placed in prision for 10-20 years for vehicle manslaughter for driving drunk. Why is this guy out playing football? A average Joe gets 10-20 years or life for something like that. Not only does he get a second chance he turns around a few years later and gets caught with DUI.(three times the legal limit)

Tank was the starting DT with Tommie Harris not his replacement. The Bears have a huge gap at DT now they dropped Tank, which is why a lot of people in Chicago were shocked when it happened. They let Ian Scott (The backup DT) go in FA this offseason which made releasing Tank even more of a problem for the Bears.
Our team needs to start taking a tougher stand with it's players. Cutting a third string LB isn't enough, IMHO...

Not that I would ever defend that sorry excuse for a troll, but Bruce Coslet, Sam Wyche, and Boomer Esiason invented the no huddle in the 80's. Although the personal in now very different, their offense resembles the '88 Bengals more closely than the Colts and techniqually you could say the Colts stole their offense from the Bengals of 20 years ago, although successful NFL offenses are created around the strengths of their own personel, not immitations of teams prior so I think this is a rather pointless discussion.

Thank goodness I read your post because oasiswr proved the exact point of my post. Not only did it have factually incorrect infomation but it totally skirted around the issue. I personally don't care what the bengals do with their players and they have every right to keep whoever they want to. However I do find it annoying that that fans use the excuse that Marvin's hands are tied. Because that is complete B.S.
In the Tank Johnson case he was pulled over for speeding and cited for suspicion of drinking. The Bears released him the next day. FYI the results of his blood test proved that he was under the legal limit. On the other hand the Bengals always say that they have to wait for the criminal courts to run its course. All the Bengal fans jump on here and say that they have no other choice because of the CBA. Again I am not judging either method just pointing out that the Bengals and Marvin do have other choices.

According the reports from Bears site Tank was placed on a strict no law enforcement contact involving crimes period or he's out regardless if was under the influence or not.(due to his large rap sheet, felonies, and violating parole) And .072 is pretty messed up state of mind at the time considering he probably waited like two to three hours to get that blood test in the first place. So what's the difference between .072 and .8 ----- a few more sips on that 24 ounce draft of beer? When Tank plead guilty to a felony charge of firearms possesion during parole that made him a two time felon.More than likely there will be some union contract problem between Tank and the Bears later on during the season.
I'm more worried about certain characters violating steriods on a certain Chargers team (Shawne Merriman), than typical lushes on a football team. Granted these players should be paying for a limo if they wish to party, but losing their jobs for drinking--- whatever. I'm against the idea of cutting them only to provide more cheap players for the Ravens or Patriots, but in favor of 1-2 year ban or permanent.

Ghostrider,
(Yeah, because our last two rookie head coaches have been SOOOOO horrible.
(Are these the Bengals of old? I don't think so. Yes, you found ways to lose games last year that you should have won (grasping defeat from the jaws of victory) but you can believe that the more you get away from that image, the more serious the other teams are going to take you.)
(No one expects the Steelers to do much because of our new coaching staff, and you'll start this year with that, "Same old Bengals" reputation - and for those reasons I think both clubs will have pretty good years.)
I'll give you that we have a difference of opinion on everything you said, except one:
My name is GhostWRITER, not GhostRIDER.
GhostRider was a Bengal fan - and not a very good one. He talked smack absent facts, finished all of his posts with "ROFL" as if he were online in a chat room, and got banned for using the F bomb.
Make that two things....you said TWICE in your post, "Past success is no guarentee of success in the future", then you finished your post by saying that "We have a level of competition that rivals any in the league, and will continue to do well in the future".
Unless I misunderstood that....that was a contradiction. You can't say that the past doesn't determine the future, then say that because we're good now, that we will be for years to come.
I thought I did?
This will always be the best division in football to me. We have a level of competition that rivals any other division in the NFL today and will continue well into the future (short of the Lord’s return).
Yes, you contradicted yourself.
No, I was not refering to the past , I said
We (have) a level of competition that rivals any other division in the NFL (today)
notice these two words show present tense! NEERRRRR!
And how is it possible to have a high level of competition TODAY when we're not playing football right now?!
You can - at most recent - be referring to LAST season, which - according to the laws of time and space, IN THE PAST!
Thus...you most certainly DID contradict yourself when you said that past success has no bearing on future success, then said that we have a level of competition that rivals any other division in the league.
Not my fault that you don't understand what you write.
Score one for the Ghost
