Last year the Bengals picked up Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft. This year’s supplemental draft class is being touted as on of the better classes in recent years. The Bengals have some compensatory picks this year. Do think that will use one in tomorrow’s supplemental draft?
There are a few players that I think the Bengals may be interested in.
The top prospect is Paul Oliver a corner back form Georgia. He was the number one rated defensive back coming out of high school, but he had academic problems at Georgia. He wasn’t eligible for this year draft, but was projected to be a top ten pick in the 2008 NFL draft. The Bengals have drafted a corner in the last two drafts do you think they would spend a pick on a third CB?
There is also a couple of DT in the pool, Robert Armstrong from Morgan State and Clinton Dickson from Florida State. Armstrong is 6’ 4”, 319 pounds and very quick. Could he help our defensive line?
I’m not sure that they will dip into the supplemental pool this year, but I going to keep an eye on it. Are there any other prospects that you think the Bengals may be interested in?

Until Paul Oliver ran a linebacker time in the 40 I was in favor of taking him in the supplemental. But we already have one slow SEC corner on our roster. We don't need another. He is better suited to a Cover-2 defense.
None of the others appeal to me all that much.

One of the reasons we took Brooks was his relationship with our linebackers coach, iirc. Our linebackers coach had known him for years, and knew he was a good kid.
That being said, I have no qualms with using a 6th or 7th round pick on one of these guys.

If we put in a bid on anyone, I think it'll be the OTs out of Maryland and Nebraska, Paul Oliver or the OLB to SS convert out of Connecticut. Other than them I don't really see anyone else.

40 times are not everything grasshopper... if 40 times made the player, Chad Johnson would be lucky to be a #3 receiver anywhere in this league (OK i exagerate a little)... Chad ran LB time on the 40 (a 4.6)... game speed is what matters, and Oliver has that.
Do we take him? I don't think so... but you never know.
I think the Bengals stay out of the supplemental this year.

CJ also ran an 11.1 second 110 meter when he raced the horse.

True... who is the real thorough-bred??
Like I said, 1 timed run doesn't make the player... a good time is great and all, but not the end all be all of how good a player is at their position, nor how skilled they are.

We've got too many CBs on the roster now. We wouldn't draft another right now. I think that we might pick up a DT or TE if there was a great one available in the supplemental draft, but I wouldn't expect us to do so.

I wouldn't mind if the Bengals used a later round pick on Oliver (5th or higher, maybe even 4th), but I doubt he'll drop that far.
40 times are important but production on the field is more important. Oliver has proven he can play against the best in college (i.e. His play against Calvin Johnson). So if he's available we should probably make a play for him.
The main reason why I think we should draft Oliver is because of the Tampa Bay game last season. Ratliff wasn't physical enough to prevent the go ahead TD. Oliver has proven (At least in college) he can be physical with big receivers and push them off the ball. Something our defense could use (especially against TE's).
That being said I don't think we'll go after anyone in the supplemental draft this year...

I won't argue that, but I do have to say him running the 110 meters that quickly surprised the hell out of me. I knew he was fast, but never thought he could run that fast, even if it was just one timed run.You are right, though, about it not making the player. Because in football regardless of position there are many factors that are much more important than speed is. That is why, contrary to popular belief, you can actually be a good CB or WR without being one of the fastest guys on the field. It is all about feel, fundamentals, and in all honesty I have always believed that the most important thing any player besides the QB needs, is agility.

Wise man say forgiveness is devine but never pay full price for late pizza.
Wiser man say, you can NEVER have too many good CBs on an NFL roster.
