View Full Version : Don't Draft Lawrence Timmons

The title says it all.
In my opinion the two positions the Bengals should be looking at in the first round (based on our needs, who will likely be available, and depth at position groups in this class) are CB and LB.
Personally, I have a lot of questions regarding many of the top CB prospects in this year's draft class. The names most frequently being thrown around as CB possibilities for the Bengals in the 1st round are Chris Houston and Darrelle Revis. Although Houston played well against top competition and has very good measurables, I don't like much of what I have read regarding Houston's personality. He has been said to be cocky, and according to Scouts inc. Houston "Doesn't show as much interest in run support as he should. He is satisfied to let his teammates make plays versus the run instead of going out of his way to get involved."
As far as Revis is concerned, I don't know if it's a lack of top end speed and athleticism or the fact that his production seemed to decrease each year in college, but I just don't have a good feeling about Revis as a 1st round pick. Call it a hunch.
Therefore, I believe the Bengals should target a LB in the first round. Numerous reports have indicated that the Bengals are interested in prospects that best project as WLB's (Rufus Alexander and Justin Durant). The Bengals aren't comfortable with Landon Johnson as the future on the weak side (and they shouldn't be), and IMO are in desperate need of a playmaking LB. Lawrence Timmons fits the bill.
Despite rankings and reports that have Jon Beason ahead of Lawrence Timmons, I believe Timmons to be the better prospect. Timmons is raw due to inexperience but any FSU fan (yes I'm an FSU fan...I can assure you however that this is not a "homer" pick) will tell you that this guy showed flahes of DOMINANCE in college. Timmons has exceptional athleticism and was all over the place this past season. Famed FSU D-coordinator Mickey Andrews took full advantage of Timmons' athleticism by using him as a versatile weapon on the strong side, at times on the weak side, and even with his hand down as a pass rusher. Timmons has a 2nd gear and has great instincts that allows him to make many plays in the opponents backfield. He's also a vicious hitter...maybe not quite as vicious as Ernie Sims (few are), but some believe Timmons may actually turn out to be a better pro LB than Sims.
Timmons would be ideal to plug in on the weak side and take advantage of his athleticism by letting him fly around and make plays. I'll be watching intently on draft day, hoping that one of the best kept secrets of the 1st round is still available at #18.

I agree with you about Revis. I am not sold on him either. I do like what I have seen from the Houston kid from Arkansas. He looked very physical despite his size. But do we take a corner 1st 2 years in a row?
As for Timmons, it all depends on who is still on the board but I do like him. When that guy was going around to every teams website and doing a mock draft my vote for the Bengals pick was to take Timmons so I would not be upset if we ended up with him.

But some of us may be scared to draft Timmons in the first round because he brings up memories of another FSU LB we took in the 1st...

Wilson was a DE/LB tweener who tried to make a transition when coming into the league. Timmons is a natural LB who doesnt face a steep learning curve

I used to be a fan of Timmons, but then I heard about him dropping in the draft because he has gotten out of shape. I like Beason in the first round, especially if he runs in the 4.5 range when he is healthy.

I hadn't heard of this. Can you provide a credible source?

I like Timmon's versatility and playmaking, but if it's true that he's dropping like we've all heard he wouldn't be a good value at 18.
There's even a chance he could drop into the second. That could make him the steal of the draft.
I definitely prefer him to Beason though.

If there was promise that Timmons could quickly get back into shape and improve himself, I would love to take him in the second and Justin Harrell in the first even though I don't think he will fall that far. This shows me laziness out of Timmons though. We don't need that. That's why Beason is a better fit. He has the talent.

I do agree that this years CB prospects dont look as good as i have seen but you got to admit we need one in the worst way and in all honestey we do need a pure athlete at LB to.I wouldn't be suprised if we go CB in round 1but that wouldn't be my ideal pick if we go LB i wouldn't mind Paul Po or Lawrence Timmons.

Thanks for the link. I don't know who JJ Cooper is (the guy who wrote the article), but if this is true then it's really disappointing. I guess we'll wait and see.

How do we know Beason isn't just lazy. I know there are reports that he might not have been 100% at the combine, but we don't know for sure and his performance was even less impressive than Timmons. I wish I could have seen him play, but I just don't see much in Beason from researching.

There are reports on Timmons being just straight out of shape. Beason had a injury. No scouts complain about Beason being lazy. A lot of your questions will be answered when he does his latest workout.

Good point.
Being an FSU fan, I have to say I had never heard of Timmons having any work ethic issues. The again, Lawrence wasn't really talked about much until this past season.
The report in the above link was disturbing though. I was going back on forth on Timmons and another prospect for weeks as to who I wanted the Bengals to take in the 1st round. I think by process of elimination, I'll have to lean toward "the other guy" now after having read this report.
BTW, I edited the topic title for those that are confused. I was not aware of the reports that were brought to my attention in this thread. Lawrence is a tremendous talent IMO, but if he can't even keep himself in shape NOW...then that's a huge red flag.
