To everyone that is ready to throw O'Sullivan under the bus for his performance last Sunday....Were you also screaming for him to be our starter last year based on his preseason performance?
Because of Carson's ankle injury last year O'sullivan was our starting QB in pre-season and played mostly against the other teams first string defense. He completed 28 of 39 (71.8%) for 358 yds, 3 tds, 0 ints and a passer rating of 125.8. That passer rating is higher than Peyton Manning's single season record from '04 (121.1).
So since you all can judge a QB so well based on his pre-season performance, why wasn't O-'Sullivan named our starter over Carson last year?
And if you want to look at regular season games O'sullivan started 8 games for a weak San Francisco team in '08 and put up a passer rating higher than several starting QBs in the league last year. For example people give the Ravens a lot of credit for signing Bulger whose highest passer rating over the last 3 years as a starter was 71.4. O'Sullivan's rating as a starter in S.F. was 73.6.
O'sullivan is not as bad as you guys are saying.

Ever the optimist Fred.. I've never attempted to rape a woman in a bar.. maybe the squealers ought to give me a shot at starting QB.. That would help the Bengals for sure!
I see your point and was tempted to make the same thread a few days ago myself, but didn't want my house getting fire bombed by some irate Bengals fan.
This is the Bengals forum where thy don't need no steenking proof to chastise anyone..One bad or broken play is enough to send even the best players off to the UFL.. Sad, huh? I was ready to trash him then looked up last years pre-season info and you're right.. but it WAS pre-season too.. The problem with backups is they don't usually play unless there is a crisis and everyone expects perfection coming off the bench when they haven't payed all season.

I understand where you are coming from Fred, but he is like Dan Orlovsky level, and honestly while it isn't "that" bad, it also isn't that good either.

Fred, I believe you have a point.
And despite what anyone thinks there is NO CHANCE the Bengals cut either JTO or Jordan for anyone else. There would be no point, by the time they have got another suitable QB that was 'better' than either of them, it would take them a fair while to learn the system and get the timing and everything together.
I really feel like Brat handcuffs JTO when he plays. Against the Jets we just ran the ball and threw little screen passes which the defence basically blitzed on every play. It also doesent help having the 3rd string O-line playing.
Like Fred said, last pre season JTO was fantastic, its only been one game lets wait and see yet.

Fred.. are you willing to admit that if Carson gets seriously injured our shot at winning the prize is completely over?
Palmer has been really beat up over the years and some day he's going to just say enough is enough.. Would you hand the keys to daddys shiny new car over to JT?
Here's the deal. You can make a reaaaaally great bowl of twice-baked, roasted-garlic mash potatoes, but if you burn the chicken, your dinner is still gonna taste like crap and leave you unsatisfied.
My point? Our OL stinks, and until they dont, not many QB's will look good for us. To further my point--backup QB is not a problem. WR is not our problem. TE is not our problem. It's the stinky weak OL and their lack of pass protection.

I thought it was because of Bratkowski. <_<

Oh well he can stink too that's for sure. My thing is this though. When we had good blocking, his offense THRIVED. Everybody loved Bob. I'm not a huge fan of his scheme, but at the end of the day all games are won in the trenches (unless your the Steelers. Their games are won by paying off the refs--especially in Super Bowls)

We have one of the best defenses in the league and a solid running game, so we can win games without Carson.
And if I was looking for a starting QB I would try to find someone other than O'Sullivan. As a #1 he isn't that good. But as a back up he isn't that bad.

I know this may be coming out of left field but - has anyone ever think about making Matt Jones a backup?
I think he played QB back in college??

Caldwell played QB in high school.
And Craig Krenzel is still available.

what about packaging all of our WRs and getting Hines????
he played on GA's team as a QB????
ok, im done
I did not realize JT played so well last pre-season. I did think he needed another game before being cut (assuming he played poorly) but now I just expect him to play better.

sorry but you are wrong... Fitzpatrick also had some really good stats in the preseason so much so that people where calling for him to start over palmer... and got their wish. and now where is he??? JTO is an emergency type QB that you onlt put in the game because you have no other options... if he was halfway decent we wouldnt be his 11th team

He brought Arkansas into a revival as the starting QB, yes. I say let him have a drive or so in the 3rd or 4th quarter this next preseason game as QB just to see what he's got. What could it hurt?

lol, close, but no cigar....that would be a certain WR by the name of "SLIM", aka Chris Henry (RIP)...he was the one that was making JTO look good....I clearly remember the discussion around this time last year, which led to people thinking that JTO could commandeer this offense (some people believed over Carson) should something ever happened to Palmer.
And in turn, those same people were miffed when Henry wasn't getting as much PT as they thought he deserved (you can count me in that category).

But he isn't as good as you are suggesting, either.
But that is why he is a backup, and looks like Boris Said with a helmet.

Kind of like farts don't smell quite as bad as manure..at least THEY will blow away with the wind.. JTO I'm not to convinced will..The censors won't let me say what I wanna say here..
Sure we can win SOME games with JTO..We won SOME games with Fitzy too..
One good thing with Fitzy.. he has game experience with TO at least..and getting sacked to death as well..

he is not as bad as he looked. that being said, i've never seen his body language appear the way it did during the Hall of Fame game. He looked sullen, angry, petulant, and a whole host of other things. I have no idea what was going on with him but it was just a disastrous performance when you look at the complete package. It's definitely possible to regress when you are not a regular player. That could easily be the case.

All I have to say is he looked better than Jordan. I wanted to hit JP in the head with a bottle and it was just a preseason game.

J.T. cannot be held accountable for poor pass-protection. But he does seem to let his emotions get to him, letting one bad pass turn into another. As an eight year vet, he needs to show more poise. I was expecting him to be hot off the bench and find a groove right away, but he looked more self-destructive than anything. Maybe with a cooler head, he can make better game decisions. He shouldn't let his frustrations squander his chances to prove himself.
