View Full Version : Offensive Player Conundrum

I know many people are high on selecting a defensive player in the draft. However, let's say that we pick in the 6th-12th range. If the offensive players, Darren McFadden or Jake Long, fall to our spot, do we take one of them?
Kenny Watson is a UFA after this season and may get a bigger offer from another team. Rudi is has been plagued by the injury bug this season, Chris Perry is made of glass, and Kenny Irons is coming off a major injury. Does this make him a probably pick?
Some drafts have Long falling and if we're high enough, do we take him if he falls to us. Willie is starting to break down and tries to help this team out and not put his health as a #1 priority. Stacy Andrews is a UFA after this season and got some major attention last year as a RFA, especially from the Jets and they need O-line help.
Do we trade the pick to someone else if both are still there and a defensive playmaker isn't there?
What do we end up doing?

I think a lot of that depends on our FA situation entering the draft. If Stacey Andrews leaves, then Jake Long is a definite possibility, especially with Willie's health on the decline. However, if we re-sign Andrews, I doubt we would even think about taking him. McFadden, on the other hand, would be a great addition to our offense no matter what. However, with a first and second round pick already taken at RB over the last few years, I really don't see us taking him (unless Mike Brown goes Matt Millen on us). I think we have too many issues and questions surrounding our defense to take an offensive player in the first or second round. I think the coaching staff is very high on Irons, and I think he should be able to make it back. Carson came back from a more serious knee injury in less time. Although, Carson does not rely on cutting and speed like Irons does, so who knows if he will ever be the same. Even if we pick in the 10th - 15th slot, we can still get an impact defensive player like Keith Rivers. I think we would have to be in a very dire situation at either of those positions to take either one of them.

If we re-sign Stacy Andrews then we don't need to select a lineman in the first round.
We have an OUTSTANDING eye for OLineman and can find gems in the later rounds.
I still think we need Defense, but if we're going to do it, I say McFadden. Although I'd rather trade the pick.

long from michigan is an absolute beast i would take him over mcfadden but i would still draft defense maybe trade down and pick up another late pick and still get the best available d linemen or linebacker...i'm sure if the two of those players are still on the board they would be some teams interested in trading

Well i selected Jake Long but we really don't know untill the season is over who we go after but it's a interesting thought. If we do resigned Stacy then i say trade for defense.

I'm all for a trade down. We could probably pick up a lower first and a few midround picks.
Then we can load up on some Linemen (both sides of the ball) and pick up another receiver.
Yeah, you heard me, another receiver. One that returns kicks and runs like the wind. Chris Henry is always questionable, and the other guys behind him don't stand out.

We already have a good enough offense to win with but we will never be a real winner untill the Bengals wake up and build a good defense that can stop the other team. Seems like all we hear from most people is draft a RB-TE-WR-OL fix the defense first and latter take care of the offense.

I'm not proposing drafting offense early and often, but I am saying I wouldn't mind or be surprised by a high round pick on a receiver, like a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Especially if it was someone who was a Special Teams maven and return man extraordinaire.
I'm all for taking defense in the first few rounds. Actually, for most of the rounds, just with an O-lineman and a Special Teams type of receiver thrown in there.

I'd like to get a ST extraodinaire as well but that talent is hard to judge. Unless I'm mistaken, back in 2000 Peter Warrick was supposed to fill that roll. Regardless of injuries and who he could have played for he was a moderate returner at best.

If we draft an offensive player with our first pick, I give up.

If we draft an offensive player with our first pick, I give up. That makes two of us.

Didn't Kenny watson just sign a 3 year deal earlier this year in the offseason.

Our Offense even when playing badly is rated Top 10 or Top 5 therefore we need to concentrate on Defense.
IMO we should just say to heck with it, we are nearly a 3-4 Defense now lets get the right few it would take to go there. Why ? Because our Defense plays best when attacking. So lets attack and get the DLine, DB's and LB's that we need to fill those holes.
Another reason being also is that if we had a Top 10 or 5 Defense (you may laugh), which isn't that far off imo, with no suspeneded players and healthy players there would be a large difference on the Defense. It would help the Offense out too by taking some pressure off of them.
The future of our Defense has finally arrived and hopefully come draft day it will continue the right way.

trade the pick reason is a lot of teams will want to trade up and get those players(which there is no way they will be there) and long got man handled by vernon in the michigan-ihio state game this year;) lol that was a side note ......every one knows i want vernon on this team but to look at your point of view i would honestly trade .......
also i think with a whole off season to train and work on his blocking de de dorsey is a great change of pace back and if we keep rudi he should be healed from his injury and also we just drafted kenny let him heal and we should be alright but draft a o-lineman in the 4th or 5th round to back up stacy because we have to resign him:Clap::Clap: and last tim i checked we had 900 running backs already lol

While I agree D is the very likely pick, if McFadden is there I take him. I do not want to hear the Stephen Jackson comments we heard before. Then we can draft D for the entire rest of the draft except a TE in the 4th or later rounds. I'd be happy with that. 2nd and 3rd rounders are good players. McFadden has that speed we are missing on offense.
Our D would improve with a 2nd rounder and two 3rd rounders IMO.

I hated the Peter Warrick pick. He was a bust through and through. The only great game he had as a Bengal was the KC game. Other than that game, he didn't exist.

ok, so everyone talks about vrnon man-handling jake long, but how did long fare against everyone else. Vernon is a freak of nature. How did he do against Florida's DE's? What about some of the other talent he has faced the last 4 years? How did he fare? I heard he only gave up 2 sacks in his career.
