Yeah he sure cashed in. I can't wait to see him on the field this year.

Still undecided on if the Steelers philosophy of signing players to less than the maximum years is a good strategy or not. Such as signing Timmons to a 5 year instead of a 6 year contract, or offering three year contracts to some rookies.
Any thoughts from Steeler fans on this?

I think some of the 5 year contracts are more to do with the player preference in contracts.

As for the 3 year contracts i think it has something to do with Restricted Free Agents, which i believe happens up to the fourth year...therefore they can still keep that player in year four...

It hasn't really been an issue before. I guess I'm indifferent.

You're right about the three year contracts being related to FA status. After three seasons they are RFA whereas after the fourth year they are UFA. So in that respect it is a good idea to sign players to three year deals so you can at least get a compensatory draft pick in return if you lose an impact player in FA.
At the same time though it's going to cost more to keep your team together, if you have to make tender offers to a lot of players to keep them around.
But if Steely is right and there hasn't been any issues yet related to these type of contracts then the philosophy appears to be working so far...

I really don't understand what leg rookies have to stand on, demanding so much money before they've ever played a down in the NFL.
Hope you get yours signed, too. Kind of anxious to see what your newly drafted CB can do on the field.

I can understand it. Agents and family members keep telling them how they need to get paid now in case they get hurt.

Yeah, the NFL is not kind to players bodies, and I cant blame them for trying really...cause play can end it all...

Well, naturally the rookies are going to ask for those amounts, but on what reasoning do the teams cave in on their demands? There are too many examples of rookies who get big contracts and fizzle out for this to be good business. There ought to be a way of putting a cap on rookie salaries and structuring the contract with incentives so that new players will have to earn the outrageous amounts they want to make.

Most rookies arn't demanding huge amounts, the way it works is once some of the guys ahead of them or behind them sign then they get an idea at to what they are entitled to, then they will "slot" there contract somewhere between those contracts.

their are some rookies who demand more than their "slot" would provide and that i don't agree with.

Hockey may not be the best example of how a league should be run, but i think they have it right, they have maximums on rookie contracts

With the cap, then there should be some sort of contract limitations... especially for rookies IMHO>

Well part of it is if rookies are getting paid these crazy amounts of money, it essentially destroys any chance another football league has of cropping up.

Geez Ghost!!! Each year the pie gets bigger and the agents get (most that is) a little more greedy. And the draft choices listen to their agents not the fans.

With the kind of money getting thrown out there eventually they need to have some kind of limit on rookie contracts. Unlike the NBA they can limit the amount of money that is guaranteed. There needs to be a limit set especially the way that veteran contracts are blowing up.

A high draft pick LB that seems to have injury issues out of the gate. Sounds familiar...

This is just sad. Tomlin had better do something about this injury BS real soon. Obviously this guy's doing something wrong. Maybe he doesn't condition right, practice right, or maybe just doesn't have proper diet. Whatever it is, I hope Tomlin straightens him out. He was our #1 pick, so he has to be prepared to work hard, or this lack of practice time could really cut into his development. Timmons has the talent to be a star LB, he just needs to screw his head on. I just hope this injury problem turns out to be a fluke and we don't end up wasting our number one pick.
On a lighter note, Woodley's turning out to be a real beast on the field. Just ask Davenport. [;)]

Are you suggesting that Tomlin should do something with Timmons groin?

So Woodley is a beast so far? Not surprised I think most Bengal fans were hoping he would drop to the Bengals in the second round. But Kenny Irons will fit in nicely...

Did they sign Irons yet? I heard on ESPN radio he was a possible hold-out... I suppose I could just search the web for this answer... but it's less keystrokes to hit "post" at this moment... so be it.

Irons is signed. We signed all of our picks to four year deals already with the one exception being Leon Hall. Hopefully his deal with get done soon. At the moment it's looking like Hall will miss one or two days of training camp...

The deal was final this morning along with FB McClain. Now if we can only get our weak link Flynn out as our starting center and replace him with Chester I think our line will be great.

I think that Woodley is going to turn out to be your best linebacker of the draft. He is perfect for the 3-4 defense.
I'm just sad that I have to root against him now...
