Remember 1999. Mike Brown doesn't trade draft picks. We turned down the Saint's entire draft for our 1st round pick, and proceeded to select Akili Smith, thus passing up the following pro bowlers:
Edgerrin James
Ricky Williams
Torry Holt
Champ Bailey
David Boston
Chris McAlister
Daunte Culpepper
John Tait
Jevon Kearse
Damien Woody
Antoine Winfield
Patrick Kearney
Al Wilson
Dre Bly
Joey Porter
Sure, the bears ultimately selected Cade McNown with the pick we'd have gotten from the Saints, but plenty of guys like Jevon Kearse were still on the board at that point. Either way, had we had better scouting or traded the pick, we could have done better. But the point is, we're not going to trade our 1st round pick. We'll select someone mediocre at best and overlook some perrenial pro bowlers. Why? Because our scouting unit is that good.

Some of you guys amaze me. Why does everyone complain about the first round picks?
This team generally does pretty good with the first rounders. The rest of the draft is where it falters.

We so need some play makers and there are some potential big time play makers in the first 5 picks-we need to keep the first pick and get a talented play maker. We do not have many of them.

Great idea. Let's use the #3 overall pick on a guy that is projected to be a mid first rounder.

So we're going to use a top 3 pick on a guard?

Tackle is the least of the needs on the offense.
We need interior linemen.

You do not take a guard in the top 3 of the draft.
You rarely take on in the 1st.

Mike Brown as always said that you can not pass on a franchise QB because you don't know when you will get that opportunity again. Whether we trade Carson or not will not matter, we will selct a QB if they feel Mallett, Luck or Newton is their guy.

Except Mike has his franchise QB named Carson Palmer.
