“My disappointment is I can’t tell you what we are. The key to offense is to be offensive and stay offensive. What we are is a big statement. It has to be all encompassing.” -Marvin Lewis-
Eh Marvin, indulge us....Exactly what in the hell about Brat's performance as our OC (it's been a frigging decade now) has led you to believe anyone in their right flipping mind would ever expect anything "all encompassing" or "big statement"ish to come of a Brat directed offense.
Marvin seems to be suggesting that perhaps the needed change can occur with Brat when just prior to the quote above he said he's "not ready to give them heads" with regard to firing assistants, offensive assistants in particular...
This is the limit of stupidity and the definition of insanity. This idiot has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that no sane or competent person would expect anything other than an ill prepared, inconsistent, severely and clearly out coached unit to spring forth from under the direction of one Bob Bratkowski.
Seriously, I don't think Marvin is so stupid as to not want a different OC. I think that at this point he's rationalizing Mike Brown's desire to keep his buddy Brat on the staff.
Marvin has been exposed as a dude who is terribly lacking as an effective football coach. From an X's and O's standpoint, he just ain't got it. Or at least that is probably the justifiable perception at this point among the people who are in the business of hiring head football coaches....So when no offers to coach Pitt or anyone else materialized he "settled" for the 4.5 million Mikey boy was offering.
Ray Lewis and the boys made him look like a million bucks and he continues to reap the benefits. At this point he is nothing more than a paid minion doing MB's bidding. And right now his marching orders involve swallowing his pride and biting his tongue as he tries to sell us another fresh plate o' krap served up by Mikey's little buddy Chef Brat.

I agree Savage. I was reading his comments and couldn't help but think, "WTF?". Grab some balls and take charge of the team, Marvin, or GTFO.

I'm sayin'. After all the losing, Marvin would be a folk hero in Cincy by just admitting the obvious. He's done the best he could with the tools he's been given but he can't win without being able to make needed changes within the staff.
The talent of this team is offensively focused, always has been. That's fine, but a defensive head coach like Marvin can't do anything with a hack like Brat in charge of the offense.
What Zimmer has been able to do with a mediocre amount of talent (by NFL standards, except at the cornerback position) ought to serve as a first hand example to Mike Brown of just how much of a difference coaching makes in this league. It's a coaches league and Mike Brown is shamelessly protecting his buddy to the detriment of the team.

I think Marvin's going to make a pitch to hire Childress if Childress told Marvin he'd want the job. That's not certain according to the front page. There's a chance he could end up in Cleveland. He has a history/friendship with Schermer, the Browns' new HC.
Did the Ratbirds fire their OC yet? They need to, but I hope they don't. He's worse than Brat IMHO.

I hope Marvin does try to get him here. Childress is a close friend of Zimmer as well, just as an aside.

Really? I didn't make that connection. Did they coach together at some point? That could offset the Cleveland thing a little, maybe.

I was never a fan of the Marvin Lewis hiring. At the time, I was pleading for Mikey choose Tom Coughlin, who appeared to be the front runner early on. But after marvin landed the gig, he was able to do some good things and at least develop some sense of respectability when it came to this organization. But, like all who venture into and stay a prolonged period of time in Bengal land, he has become beaten down, misguided, and bitter. He has been Bengalized by the Dark Lord of the Bengal abyss, Mikey Beelzebrown!

Marvin is like Yoda. He has to speak in riddles. However, unlike Yoda, Marvin HAS to speak in riddles to keep his job.
Pathetic it is, I think. But Mike Brown owns the team he does.
Besides, Yoda looks more like Lovie Smith than Marvin anyway.

It makes me sick that we might be making a move for Childress, a dude who is fresh off of failing miserably and whose main success in this league came as Andy Reid's OC a la Jim Bollman under Jim Tressel (in both instances, the real OC is Reid and Tressel).
But a guy like Josh McDaniels, who is clearly a great OC if not head coach was on the market until recently and we didn't even look his direction.
This team could not be more pathetic, the lack of accountability will most likely result in another 3 or 4 win season in 2011.
I hate this team.

What does this mean? After this long, you can't tell what you are? Half of the time, what Marvin says makes no sense - is it just me? He talks in riddles and rhymes - say what you mean for once - dang!He starts out saying my disappointment is I cant tell what we are, he is refering to are we a pass or run team, he cant tell. Then he says the key to to offense is being offensive, which means are purpose on offense is to move the ball and score points, this team seemed more as if they was trying to keep T.O. and Ocho happy, and just be competant and not shoot itself in the foot, In other words scoring points and being a dominant offense was not this teams goal the past year, eliminating turnovers and penalties and getting receivers and QB on the same page was more important than just being a dominant offense and scoring points. The statement part I just explained, we were more interested as a team in showing that T.O. and Ocho could work, and that Palmer is not washed up, Marvins point is we were more interested in proving these type of points than proving we are a offensive force to be reckoned with, We have to be focused on what every offense should be focused on and that is scoring points. And finally it has to be all encompassing. In other words everything has to work together, whether your out to prove Carson still has it, or T.O. can learn our entire offense in 1 training camp, Whatever a offense choose to focus on, thats all good as long as you dont loose sight of what every offense should be about which is Scoring as many points as efficiently as you possibly can. Marvin makes perfect sense here, my Question is however, how in the world do you coach here for 7 seasons and forget to instill the entire purpose of any offense, which is to ALWAYS be offensive. The more Marvin tries to outsmart the fans and pull wool over our eyes about the current state of the Bengals, the more foolish and silly he becomes.

So should he blindly follow Mikey off the cliff? If the team does not attempt to earn his support than theres a problem with there business plan. I disagree with Savage on a few things (Carson for one)....but to even suggest that he's not a fan and should find a new team... GET REAL. Maybe you should find a new team if your happy with the status quo! I'm a Bengals fan and will always be, but the money has stopped and I hope more of you will follow.

Agreed. Marvin should have stuck to DC work, but it is what it is. I'm glad he sat down and looked at all the tape and figured out what we fans saw the entire year. I just don't get why he didn't see it at the same time we did.
But that said, I think part of the reason he sounds like such a dummy at press conferences is he really has to be careful of how he couches his words. He can't tick off Mike or he loses whatever ground he may have made with him. I really do believe that Mike is so loyal (to the wrong people some times) and demands such loyalty, that he gets really upset wen someone says anything knowingly contradicting his views. Just watch Carson put on the Zombie face for his interviews. He's not thinking about what he wants to say, he's thinking about what he has to say.

Exactly.. Its not like Marvin a defensive minded coach can take over play calling duties for Brat. Im sure if Marvin had any kind of offensive minded back ground he would have seasons ago.

I find this one amusing. Easy to answer as well. The Bengals aren't anything. We're not an offensive team, a defensive team, a running team or a passing team.
We are not everything the coaching hasn't made us.
Thanks to Marvin and Bratkowski for that. At least Zimmer is trying to give the defense an identity.
