 I was wondering the same thing. I made a post the other night saying that there will be blackouts if Mikey doesn't spend, and Florio brought that up. He also brought up releasing Rey, which we've discussed on here.
I can't watch here at work, what did he have to say?

#1 really has to happen. If Mike doesn't spend good money this year, he'll have to overpay to avoid losing money not spent.

#1) Spend Money
hahahah im glad PFT is so helpful

If the Bengals do drop the amount of money they need to in order to resign most of their own free agents and additionally bring in a few players on the offensive line and the defensive backfield, this could be the single busiest combined offseason from the Bengals and the Reds that Cincinnati has ever seen.

For those who can't watch or just want the highlights:
#1 Gotta Spend money - stands were empty because of this not because Bengals were bad team in 2011.
#2 Find a corner - whether it's a FA or via draft
#3 Get rid of Rey - Disappointed both on and off the field.
#4 Bye Bye Benson - Committee can't work with him in it
#5 Find a FA WR - give the FA market a day or two to soften and then go find a solid vet to go with AJ Green
That's his list and a quick summary of each point.

Yeah, insight was not a word one would use to describe the segment.

So, I copied this from my new blog I have created...I am a lifelong Bengals fan living in CT...I am a high school football coach here in CT, 29 years old, and am the offensive coordinator of the #1 offense in the state, as well as the best offense in CT state high school football history in terms of yards and points...I also teach high school english...
Here is a copy of my blog...Figured it fit in this category somewhat...
So, I've decided to share my opinions with the world, or a few readers here and there, on the National Football League. Anything and everything, from daily happenings, to on-going league issues, to specific situations within organizations and players. For my first posting, I've decided to share my off-season plan for the Cincinnati Bengals. Those that know me, know how passionate I am for this team and how much hope and faith I have for the organization. 2011 was a much improved campaign, and I am looking forward to what seems to be, for now, quite a bright future. The one thing missing in Cincinnati's front office however, is a General Manager, and I will use this blog today, as my own personal advice or application for the position under Mike Brown. Sadly, thiswill not happen. But, if the following things happened, I think it would put the Bengals in a much improved state for 2012.
A few basic statistics to begin...
- 70 players on the roster
- 23 Free Agents
- 9 Draft Picks in April
-$60-62 million in cap room for 2012
First order of business...RE-SIGN CURRENT FREE AGENTS.
I have decided not to use the Franchise Tag. I was thinking about the possibility of using it on Mike Nugent, but quite honestly, I feel he is likely to sign a long-term deal regardless, and we won't need the leverage of a tag to keep him in Cincinnati.
Now, we have 23 Free Agents on the current roster. I will begin with who will be re-signed.
MUSTS
Mike Nugent (K) - Solid all season in 2011. Steady, and still on the younger side.
Jonathan Fanene (DE/DT) - Can play multiple positions, and is just an animal and a
playmaker that simply can't be allowed to walk.
Reggie Nelson (FS) - Really proved he can be a force in center field, and his athleticism is
a great attribute in the secondary.
Manny Lawson (OLB) - A great free agent pickup in 2011, who was phenomenal against the run pushing back from DE in San Francisco. Came into his own.
SOLID BACKUPS
Pat Sims/Frostee Rucker (DT/DE) - Lumping these two together, falls under the same idea as Fanene above. Multiple position players, as well as solid rotational
players that complete the group.
Donald Lee (TE) - A great veteran to have in the locker room. A good backup to Gresham.
Kelly Jennings (CB) - Showed flashes of coverage ability in spots last season, proving he can be called on in a pinch, and in nickel situations. Good veteran leadership.
Dan Skuta (LB) - Fantastic special teams player, who also played well on defense when the injury bug hit late in the year.
Dennis Roland (OT) - He is a good fit as the extra lineman in jumbo situations, and is
comfortable with the run scheme.
So, after signing those 10, here are the 13 players who will not be retained from the current Free Agent list...
Too Expensive/Not Worth It
Cedric Benson (RB) - much better replacements are on the way
Jerome Simpson (WR) - will want too much $
Anthony Collins (OT) - is going to want starting $, and will get it from somebody
Time to Move On
Chris Pressley (FB) - not a good enough fullback for Jay Gruden's offense
Andre Caldwell (WR) - can make good plays, but is injury prone, and may command more than he is really worth.
Brandon Johnson (LB) - been solid for a few years, but there are younger, better options on the roster to replace him
Bobbie Williams (OG) - toughest decision...Solid leader. Great veteran. Just too much at stake with a young offense, worrying about an old veteran coming back from
injury. We'll miss ya.
Nate Livings (OG) - okay at times, but not solid enough. We need a replacement OG.
Adam Jones (CB) - showed flashes, but too many injuries and too many coverage breakdowns. Will also command more than he is worth.
Didn't Catch On
Bo Scaife (TE) - With Lee on the roster, there isn't a need for Scaife in 2012, despite his injury.
Mike McGlynn (OG) - This experiment definitely did not work out the way we wanted.
Nick Hayden (DT) - Not worth a roster spot
Gibril Wilson (S) - Way too many injuries, and with the youth at the position, it's time to move on from Wilson.
__________________________________________________ ________________
Now, before we move on to Free Agency and the Draft, the following moves will also happen in between March-August in terms of cuts. The following list are current players who will be cut for salary cap purposes, or as young players not latching on to the 53 man roster or practice squad during camp. It will obviously include many more names (college free agents, etc), but I am just including current players...9 more players will go
*Zac Robinson (QB) - Need a different veteran presence, which I will get to shortly.
*Cedric Peerman, James Develin (RB's) - Will be a crowded backfield...see below.
*Vidal Hazelton (WR) - Crowded group of young receivers and he is the odd man out.
*Micah Johnson/DeQuin Evans (LB) - extremely crowded linebacker corps needs a few
subtractions and these two are the new guys and first to go.
*Thomas Weber (K) - was really an insurance policy in case the Nugent signing didn't come
to fruition.
*Robert Geathers (DE) - lack of production really hurt here, as he has never really lived up to
his contract signed a few years back. More of a cost-cutting move.
*Chris Crocker (S) - His playoff performance pretty much writes this ticket for Crocker. He had
been dependable, but the organization really needs a different direction.
__________________________________________________ _______________
Free Agency begins, at least aside from the current players begin re-signed. I think the Bengals have a couple possibilities here. I was contemplating going for the really big splash, and had thoughts about going after Matt Forte (RB). While I think this would definitely be a big splash, I don't really think he is the right fit for Jay Gruden's offense. A better fit would be Arian Foster (RB), but the price would be entirely too steep, and while we do have (2) 1st-Rd picks to use as ammo, I'd rather plug a few holes instead of one. Besides, I know Gruden wants to go into a running back by committee format for 2012. So, with that in mind, I felt the need to make 4 signings for the upcoming season.
1) Mike Tolbert (RB)- Proved his worth as the Chargers backup to Ryan Matthews, and will really
fit Gruden's power running attack. He has the size and ability to be a mauler
and will not come with a major price tag.
2) Mario Manningham (WR)- I've contemplated using the draft to try to get a Michael Floyd at
WR, but what this group needs is a quality veteran presence to help take the
focus off of A.J on the other side. Mario fits the bill. He has good veteran
playoff and Super Bowl experience, and he will also benefit greatly from a
change of scenery becoming the true #2 at PBS. He will become a quality
possession receiver, along the same route as Houshmandzadeh a few years
ago. This will allow Shipley and Gresham to roam around the middle.
3) Ben Grubbs (OG)- Again contemplated the huge splash and going after Carl Nicks, but Grubbs
will prove to be just as positive a signing, at a portion of the price. But, his
best attribute will be his knowledge of the AFC North. From his years in
Baltimore, we know how good he is, and he plays extremely well against
Pittsburgh. A perfect addition in the division for our OLine.
4) Brady Quinn (QB)- Before you jump all over me, here me out. Zac Robinson is not the answer
long-term as our backup. And Gradkowski sure didn't instill much
confidence in me in his spots last season. We need to bring in a veteran QB
to compete for the #2 spot behind Dalton. Quinn is still young, and I
personally feel he has a lot of ability left. He could become a solid backup
and is a good teammate with a good work ethic. Plus, he knows the division.
And now we come to the Draft. We have 9 picks this year, having an extra selection in the 1st and 5th rounds respectively. We may garner a compensatory pick or two, but we'll say for now that we stick with the 9.
1st Rd- Dre Kirkpatrick (CB- Alabama)
With Leon Hall's readiness still a question looming on the horizon, we need a player ready
to step up for the opener. Dre will do the job. Big and physical, and when Hall is healthy
he will become the heir apparent for Nate Clements. In the meantime, he will play the
nickel as needed.
1st Rd- Cordy Glenn (OG- Georgia)
GREAT showing in Indy at the combine, and truly a massive, physical presence who we can
bring in to complete the interior overhaul of the OLine. Matching him up on the right side
with Andre Smith could prove to be lethal to opposing teams trying to stop our revamped
run game.
2nd Rd- Isaiah Pead (RB-Cincinnati)
Running back by committee is in for Gruden at PBS, and he will pair up nicely with
Tolbert as the primary duo, and his athleticism will be a welcome addition to pair with
Bernard Scott on special teams. He fits the Gruden mold, and will really be a solid 2nd
round pick.
3rd Rd- Harrison Smith (SS- Notre Dame)
We're trying to formulate athleticism into this position. Something Crocker refused to
display down the stretch. Smith is the answer. He has good ball skills, and can play both
the run and the pass equally. He may step in day one and start, but even as he competes
in the secondary for a position, his character will be a nice addition as well.
4th Rd- Phillip Blake (C- Baylor)
Kyle Cook is on his last legs here getting one more chance as the starter headed into camp
before possibly giving way to a replacement. This could be the guy. He is a great run
blocker, but his smarts and football knowledge are top of the line for the position. This
will bode well on this OLine. He will also be able to learn from Whitworth and Grubbs, two
solid veterans about how to play in this division, especially with Hampton and Ngata
looming in the middle.
5th Rd- Derek Wolfe (DE/DT- Cincinnati)
Another local product, and a great fit in the defensive scheme as he follows in the line of
guys who can play both interior and outside on the DLine. Wolfe has a great motor, and
will probably spend a year on the practice squad learning from Peko, Atkins and company.
5th Rd- Jonathan Massaquoi (OLB- Troy)
Great athleticism and size to provide some depth to Lawson, Howard and others. He can
spend a few seasons learning the nuances of the game, but the physical tools are there. His
production at Troy shows he is capable.
6th Rd- Emil Igwenagu (FB- UMass)
Gruden wants a grinding, powerful blocking fullback. Pressley simply was not the answer.
Igwenagu has great size, with a huge upside coming from a small school at UMass. If we
place him in the backfield with Tolbert, you're looking at a strong backfield, capable of
completely wearing down opposing defenses.
7th Rd- Jeff Adams (OT-Columbia)
A little bit of a project coming from the Ivy League, but again, the character displayed and
the intelligence will be paramount in providing OLine depth this season. Whitworth and
Grubbs again can be called upon to tutor the young man, and his size and quick feet will
benefit him with the speed rushers of the AFC North.
So, all in all, with $60-62 million under the cap, all of the above should leave us with roughly $10-12 million leftover for two other moves I feel are necessary.
*Re-sign/Extend Andy Dalton
*Re-sign/Extend A.J Green
I know they just signed, but we might as well extend them now. Andy is our franchise Quarterback, and he needs to be signed long-term now. A.J proved he is legit, and the answer on the outside for years to come. Get it done now, and it will set the tone for the organization.
Here are the starting lineups/key backups for 2012
QB- Andy Dalton
RB- Mike Tolbert/Isaiah Pead/Bernard Scott/Brian Leonard
FB- Emil Igwenagu
WR- A.J Green
WR- Mario Manningham/Jordan Shipley
TE- Jermaine Gresham
OT- Andrew Whitworth
OG- Ben Grubbs
C- Kyle Cook
OG- Cordy Glenn
OT- Andre Smith
DE- Carlos Dunlap/Frostee Rucker
DT- Domata Peko/Pat Sims
DT- Geno Atkins
DE- MichaelJohnson/Jonathan Fanene
LB- Thomas Howard/Keith Rivers
LB- Rey Maualuga
LB- Manny Lawson
CB- Nate Clements/Dre Kirkpatrick
CB- Leon Hall
FS- Reggie Nelson
SS- Harrison Smith/Taylor Mays
K- Mike Nugent
P- Kevin Huber
LS- Clark Harris
Practice Squad for 2012
Aaron Brown (RB)
Armon Binns (WR)
Matthew O'Donnell (OT)
Derek Wolfe (DE/DT)
Jonathan Massaquoi (LB)
Vincent Rey (LB)
Rico Murray (CB)
Jeromy Miles (FS)
__________________________________________________ ______________
Well, that would be my plan for the off-season. Easier said than done, I know, but bottom line for me, the Bengals need a GM. We made good decisions before 2011, and seem to be drafting much better of later, but the proof of the opposite has been there over the past several years. These would be my plans of helping put the Bungles of the past, in the rearview mirror for good, and lead us toward the future, which hopefully will put us in the ranks with Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

Re-signing Kelly Jennings and cutting Pressley... I can't support that.

You can't do this under the new CBA.
And BRADY QUINN? That's the worst thing in this post. Horrible idea, simply horrible.

Okay few things
1) Thank you for not starting a new thread and just posting like most around here fail to do +1
2) I like the idea of signing Brady Quinn as a back up... Anyone who feels he isnt a upgrade from Gradkowski is in la la land
3) Harrison Smith SS from ND will not last till the 3rd round... And Isiah Pead will not go in the 2nd round. I would switch those 2 picks around
4) I really like the idea of getting Tolbert and then getting a young RB in the draft. I was all for getting Bush, however I think if they did that, they wouldnt draft a RB in the first 3 rounds like the SHOULD!
5) I like Mario Manningham and i think he would fit great here... However I see him getting paid a lot more than what MB will be willing to spend for that position. I say we get Meachem. He is a possession WR and will come at a good price.
6) I have a weird feeling that we trade up to get Richardson, which in that case we probably either Resign Bobbie because we dont get Glenn and Draft a CB. OR we draft Glenn and dont get a CB till maybe the 3rd round. Unfortunately you cant move up to draft Richardson and still get both a CB and a G in the first 2 rounds. I say move up to get Richardson, draft Glenn and get a CB in the 3rd. I feel like Hall will be ready and we will be fine with Clements for 1 more year as the starter. Draft a first round CB 2013.
7) I loved Crocker while he was here... But last year was by far his worst year ever! and you could see that it wasnt a fluke, he's at the end of his career in my mind. Time to allow Mays or Sands to come in, make mistakes and improve. You cant be a solid player until you get some playing time. At first it wont look pretty, but they will improve.. Just got to let the young kids play
All in all I like what you did here... I dont know if we'll do all these things.. Especially in FA, however most of these Additions and Subtractions would lead to a VERY solid Bengals team for years to come

BengalFan0721,
First of all, I want to emphasize how strongly I agree with you about Fanene. So versatile, more than capable of starting, always productive with limited opportunities. Hopefully no one else values him the way we do. Everything you want in a rotational D-lineman. One of my favorite Bengals.
Same thing, to a lesser extent, about Rucker and Sims. No reason to let guys go that you've developed into multi-positional rotational players who have not driven up their price tags and could be counted on to start.
A lot of people have been letting Manny go in their predictions and while I don't think he's great, he does seem to fit the D pretty well and is a great value who should improve in his second year with us. I think we got him pretty late last year, plus the lockout. No reason to let him go at this point, sign him for a few more years and worry about other positions.
While I'd be more than open to the idea of Martellus Bennett if that's a real possibility, I did like the way Lee played last year. Very dependable and well rounded and a good fit and perfect #2.
I'm torn on Brandon Jackson. I've always thought he looked really good during action, but it seems like we're always looking for an upgrade so we'll see what happens. I still think he's the best cover LB we have which is certainly worth something.
I don't think guys like Simpson and Pacman will draw much attention. Do you really think they'll cost much?
I'm starting to think that Bobbie's gone with his injury problems, but who knows what'll happen with Livings. He seems to have someone pulling for him.
For better or worse, I'd actually be shocked if Geathers finally gets cut.
Very interesting move with Quinn and he'd probably be a good fit.
I liked the idea of Manningham at first, but I'm starting to wonder if he'd be a good fit for our offense. Everything I've heard says that he is not a possession receiver and I think our offense needs that tough as nails TJ type guy like you said. Not sure if there's a FA out there that fits that mold. I want to say Wayne and a developmental rookie, but I just keep having nightmares about Coles.
I actually wouldn't be shocked if we went after Grubbs. We've seen the guy be solid for so many years that it couldn't be seen as too big of a risk and I doubt the Ravens can afford him. I think it'd be a smart more.
Lastly, I don't see Pead going that high. People are big on his Senior Bowl MVP, but scouts care more about the practices. The game is really just an all-star game. I do think Wolfe will go earlier.
Great job though!

We don't even have a SOLB on our roster right now, and he wants us to cut Rey also. That leaves us with only one starting LB, yet he thinks getting a #2 WR is more important than filling those holes at LB?

I'd do it in a heartbeat!
I've been coaching high school for four years working my way up the ranks...
Started as a freshman head coach, then wr/safety/special teams coordinator for varsity and jv head coach...
This past year I moved up to Offensive Coordinator/QB coach of a different program...
Got to the state championship...Runners up unfortunately...
But, #1 offense in Connecticut this season...
And #1 offense all-time in state history in terms of yardage and yds/gm...
I'll hopefully work my way up to that point one day...That's the goal!

 I was wondering the same thing. I made a post the other night saying that there will be blackouts if Mikey doesn't spend, and Florio brought that up. He also brought up releasing Rey, which we've discussed on here.
Winning not spending should be the draw to fans. Too many believe you must over spend to win.

Wow a national sports journalist who actually knows something about this team. Can't disagree with anything he said.
