At the end of last season, the Atlanta Falcons was a franchise in as much disarray as I've ever seen. Mr. Blanc was made a fool of by his star QB and his head coach. Mr. Brown, PLEASE hire someone who can get the job done. Give us Cincinnati Bengals fans a well deserved break. If for no other reason than YOU OWE IT TO US! Bring someone in here who'll turn this thing around and the Bengals will be the toast of the town.

While I'd like to see a GM eventually I must play devil's advocate here.

How has having a "smart" GM worked out so far for the Browns with Phil Savage?

OR

How well has Ted Thompson's decision to stick with Aaron Rodgers panned out so far?

How smart does A.J. Smith look after letting Drew Brees go to New Orleans to keep Philip Rivers?

I'll admit the Rivers/Brees debate is a tough one, but at least for this season the Chargers are pitiful, and Brees has been a stud since going to the Saints.

Point is having a GM won't just magically solve all the ills of this team. In fact it could actually create problems. The more pressing matter would be the expansion of the scouting department, and a complete overhaul of the training and medical staff and rehab/medical facilities.

The difference is a good GM who's willing to work with a base. Atlanta's done that this year without a major overhaul by bringing in a few "right" people. Miami's the same, although a bit larger overhaul. Patriots did it years ago when they brought in Belichick.

Savage has always had talented people around him, and Cleveland is not a place where talent stays. Who could blame Thompson for wanting to not go through another postseason hugfest coddling Farve (I don't care how he says it's supposed to be spelled). And San Diego has a lot worse problems than Rivers. Right now Rivers has a better rating, more TD's and fewer INT's.

Drew Brees and Philip Rivers are two of the best qbs in football it was a win win situation either way Favre can't play in the cold anymore he is too old and he proved that today losing to the lowly Seahawks

Although I like the idea of trying something new, I agree that a GM doesn't mean we will magically get better. A "good" GM, maybe so, but even they are few and far between. We really need more scouts for one thing, and a good offensive coordinator. Then we need to figure out if in fact it is our training/conditioning and medical staff that fuel the numbers we put on IR. That would be a big step. We have been plagued by injuries the last 2-3 years. It begins to look like more than just coincidence at this point.

Letting Steinbeck walk to tag Justin and letting Willie walk to tag Stacy were both complete bonehead moves. Maybe a good GM could've prevented it?? I dunno, but Willie kinda hinted that Mike Brown was given false info about his health, which makes me wonder who-TF is calling 'those' shots? With a good Oline, we are a completely different team this year---Carson would probably be healthy and everything. Benson would look like a stud. To think, we 'could' have had Steiny and Big Willie on this team right now.....grrrr

Your point is? If the (Insert non AFC or NFC West team here) were in the AFC West they'd be in contention to win that division too (except maybe the Lions).

The fact that 8-8 can win the AFC West doesn't change the fact that they're playing like a shell of their 2007 selves, and that an 8-8 team making the playoffs is an embarrassment. Considering the Chargers play in a division where they play the Chiefs and Raiders twice a year, 8-8 looks even MORE pathetic. On the flip side, the Saints are in the NFC South, which along with the NFC East and potentially the AFC East, is a division where none of the teams in the division will finish with a losing record.

The Chargers have beaten the Chiefs twice, the Raiders twice, the Bucs, Patriots, and Jets. That gives the Chargers three wins over decent teams (all of whom might miss the playoffs I might add) and four wins against top 8 draft pick teams....wow...I'm floored.

Point is, just because they're technically alive in the playoff picture doesn't mean they're a good team, it means they're playing in a pathetic division, the same goes for the NFC West as well. Is anyone going to sit there with a straight face and say that the Cardinals are a GOOD team after the spanking they got today? I doubt it.

Now, it IS conceivable that the Chargers, or Cardinals for that matter, could go to the Super Bowl and win. But it's not very likely.

Jesus, calm down Sally.

1) The browns have drafted pretty well.. they moved up to get the players they wanted in the draft. Worked out a lot better than our Owners strategy of "Lets hope the people in front of us dont draft him first"

2) There is no debate, the rivers/brees situation worked to perfection for both teams. Stop bringing it up, theyre 2 of the top 5 QB in the league right now. It doesnt support your argument, give it up now.

3) Aaron Rodgers has panned out VERY well. You dont think he has played well despite basically being a 2nd yr QB? You dont think he will play well next year, and the year after that, and the next.. while Favre is sitting at home in retirement? Yes, that was a good move by Ted Thompson.. Rodgers would have been so disgruntled that he would have NEVER resigned with the packers, and then theyd have 0 quality QB on their roster.

4) Just because you can point to a few examples of a proven winning formula failing here and there is no reason to NOT try that formula.

How is our NOT having a GM comparing to the rest of the league... THATS the question you should be asking.

Just fine. The Jets may miss the playoffs, and Rodger's has not been the reason why the Pack will miss the playoffs. In fact, one could very well argue that the Packers would be worse with Farve as their QB. You also have to consider that if they kept Farve they were screwed. That team was not going to win a SB. In fact, their QB in question proved my point by throwing away their best shot at the SB in last years NFCCG. Rodgers would have left after this year and then who would have been their QB? The Packers made the right call.

He looks just fine. What did Brees do in San Diego? Nothing. Rivers has been a stud since day one in SD. He has been one of the best players in the league this year. His wideouts are fine, but nothign spectacular, and Gates and LT have underproduced big time. Once again, their GM made the right call.

As far as the Packers go...I'm in constant contact with Packers fans (as I work within 5 miles of the WI border), and trust me, the Packer Backers that are glad about Rodgers over Favre are as rare as Unicorns. Especially considering his nasty habit of getting injured. And they're none too happy about this season to boot.

As far as Rivers. He has been a good QB, hence why I said it's debatable. But your retort is wrong on two fronts.
1) Brees took the Saints to the NFC Championship game in his first season, and as mentioned in my post immediately preceding yours, is potentially going to break the single season passing mark. Considering the Saints troubled history as a franchise I wouldn't consider a trip to the NFC Title game "nothing" regardless of the fact that they lost the game.

2) Rivers was not a stud since day one in SD. He sat for 2 years before he got to play. He's been damn good since taking over for Brees though, this is true.
