Thinking about going up to the top of Michigan this summer for a vacation! Great place to have a family reunion. If you make it to the top the town is called Copper Harbor. In the winter time back in the late 70's I believe they set the record for the midwest with 390 inches of snow! They have a huge lookout there as well called Brockway Mountain and great golfing and biking there as well. Anyone ever been up there?

I live across the river from Soo Michigan (the end, or beginning of I-75) in Soo Ontario. Correct name is Sault Ste. Marie for both cities. You have to love the outdoors being from this area....the largest fresh water lake in the world....plus lakes Huron and Michigan. It really is a sportsmen's paradise. The beaches are incredible and thanks to global warming the waters actually getting warmer in the summer to swim without having one's privates freeze and fall off!
I guess i'm not really answering your question though i'm sorry, it's just nice to see this area of the world i grew up in mentioned somewhere. If there's any questions about this area feel free to ask and i'll do my best to help, even if i have to ask someone else to get the answer. |

I had an uncle who lived in Alpena.
There is no major highway that goes there. The last few hours are all on local roads. Last edited by fredtoast; 04-17-2012 at 02:00 PM. |

I've been to Traverse City once about 4 years ago in the summer. Very nice area and just gorgeous scenery. Anywhere north of where the 'pine tree line' is or whatever it is called is really cool, especially for someone like me that had never been that far north before. Two other cities, not as north however, that I would recommend to go visit in general is Bay City on the east side near Saginaw, and Holland on the west coast. Holland is also known as the 'Tulip Capitol', and with the white sand dunes, is a very gorgeous town as well.

Yes Lake Baikal is the deepest lake but Superior covers much more area. Someone mentioned the Traverse City area which we frequent alot around here, especially during July for the Cherry Festival! A great area just west of TC is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Went there with my wife and took the dog....literally 4 other people on the part of the beach we were on....maybe a few miles in either direction! It was great! Can't wait til the kids are older to take them swimming there! Also plenty of amazing places here on the Canadian side with a more varied topography than the east end of the Upper Peninsula! Great beaches to the north and east. If you're in the area give it a try i promise you'll love it. I know from living down south for several years how much nature is appreciated when you live and work in a concrete jungle! |

Furthest I have been is Saginaw. I went to see a concert, Dokken open for Dio. That's really all I remember, just the drive up. Somehow I woke up in Gary, Indiana the next day. People in Michigan like to engage heavily in intoxicating substances.

Actually Mackinac Island is at the south end of the UP...it's another 45 minutes up to the Soo from there...if you go west in the UP and go up the Keweenaw Peninsula it juts right into the heart of Lake Superior...my friend went to school there at Michigan Tech in Houghton. It's a good 6 or 7 hour ride due west from the Soo if i remember correctly! The UP's very stretched out from east to west....what's the line in Bob Seager''s song...."12 hours outta Mackinaw City stopped in a bar to have a brew.." |

Maybe I am confused. I remember making the trip and we were on local roads for a major portion of the trip. Maybe he didn't live in Alpena. Maybe we just went through Alpena on the way there.
**EDIT** No I was remembering correctly. Alpena is 2 hours from I-75 in Mackinaw City Last edited by fredtoast; 04-18-2012 at 01:46 AM. |

Yes if you're coming from downstate up then you do cross the Mac into the UP...in my case i cross into the UP from the International Bridge between the twin Soo's.
Great hockey up this way too of course! And honestly i know most in the lower 48 would think we get a ton of snow every year but it's been less and less every year for the past 10 years now i'd say. In the past 3 years i've maybe used my snowblower twice each year if that?? 2 of the past 5 Christmas' had no snow on the ground until well into January! Like i said i LOVE global warming from this end of things! LOL |

As long as I don't wake up with a bullet in my arse, I'm fine...
Lots of talented people here, just not a lot of opportunities...
