Default Olympic Games

So it's about to begin.

The opening ceremony is absolutely awesome. British history and culture in one show it's just brilliant.

Thank you Danny Boyle and good luck to all the athletes.

As we say in french : 'Que le meilleur gagne.'.

I enjoy watching some of the competitions, but am not really into the pageantry of the opening ceremonies.

The Queen Elizabeth - Daniel Craig helicopter scene was priceless! Your queen has a good sense of humor and she's an excellent actress.

When I was in high school, we had to read biographies of famous people for one of our literature classes and I was given a biography of Queen Elizabeth II to read then write a book report. What struck me was not her service as queen but her service as Princess Elizabeth during World War II. She didn't have to but she joined the military as a teenage girl where she learned to drive and repair trucks and other vehicles.

Apparently, Princess Elizabeth took her job very seriously because, one day, King George VI -- that's her father for those who might not know -- paid a surprise visit to her military base near London. The king probably expected his daughter to be answering phones or doing some other light duty but instead he found her on her back on one of those rolling carts underneath a truck she was repairing. Princess Elizabeth was covered in grease and grime and she told her father how much she loved her work. Her boss shared with the king that his young daughter was among the best of his mechanics.

That's amazing to me. Now here in the US, we can't really relate to royalty in general but, because she's not afraid to get dirty to help her nation defeat a dictator, we can relate to Queen Elizabeth II. I would love to meet her.

I can't believe nbc refused to air the Lochte/Phelps races live even with allday coverage on weekends, I live in Canada so I've been able to see those races live but I've seen the outrage about this all over twitter, not to mention the race yesterday being the top story on nbc news at 6 only for Bob Costas to say the race was taped and they wouldnt say anything to spoil it when their primetime coverage started after 8

What got me pi **ed today was that I clicked on cincy.com just checking out the news. And right there with no chance of missing the leading headlines was that the women's gymnastics team won gold and Phelps winning gold in the 4X200 relay making him the most decorated olympian ever. I was like wtf. argghghghg

That's what everyone seems to be doing, nobody is gonna wait on nbc's tapings before they break word of what's going on, here in Canada our coverage is live at 4am and it runs nonstop all day and night except from 6-7pm and 11pm-12am for news, they've shown the big events live and during the evening and overnight they just replay them which I dont understand why nbc wont do the same thing when they've been on live most of the day as well. I know they do this to get the most out of their sponsors advertising but if these spoilers are going on during the day and people are watching at night anyway even after knowing in advance, there's no reason they cant show both live in the afternoon and in prime time

That sums up how I feel about NBC covering the games. Granted I like to see Americans compete, but I almost just as much want to see everyone from around the world competing as well as storylines concerning those not from here. I personally give NBC a D grade overall between the tape delayed bs and being extremely U.S. centric as that article pointed out.

Wiggins, impressive...
And we still don't have won a single medal at all... this games start to become a national tradegy. (Even our sports minister already got mad, and a mad sports minister never is a good thing.) - We still got small, but vivid chances at beachvolleyball and kayak, though, to prevent the nation from complete humiliation. Please send your love for a late wonder...

[- Good luck with Villas-Boas. Like the Spurs.]

Not everyone's... yours mainly remains unkicked. But right, snow and ice are surfaces we generally prefer. (Well, I don't. But "we" do.)
- Then again, winter olympics are strange, and the competition often is poor... are Americans even interested in that? Do you even know Bode Miller or Lindsey Vonn (or Julia Mancuso, Daron Rahlves, Ted Ligety)? - They kick our butts in skiing, even though we care so much and the US doesn't seem to care at all.

(- 10 gold medals for GB already. And Murray in 2 finals. Impressive.)

Yes, I know all of those fine skiers. However, our skiers are not legendary like the great Herman Maier and Franz Klammer.

Bode Miller should (and probably will be) regarded a legend... and Lindsey Vonn might soon be considered the best female skier ever. No kidding, they already are quite legendary in my country.

Sure, Hermann got these great stories, a former bricklayer winning two olympic golds after a horrible crash in the downhill - and then his accident where he almost lost his leg but still kept winning. But Bode had his moments, too. - As an Austrian, I have to give all of these US skiers the highest credits. They are our toughest opponent, although their (financial) resources overall are probably much, much smaller.

But it's an summer olympics thread... GB with 14 gold medals now. What a day. (And a big laugh to Stuart Pearce.)
- May the beach volleyball god be with us poor medalless Austrians.

Ok it's 100% official. NBC's coverage of the games is a joke and I am lowering my grade to an F. Just watched a piece on James Bond crap over there, while horses earlier today was shown over there while the mens 100m race was currently ongoing. But nooo they decided to tape delay one of the biggest races of the entire games on a Sunday of all days. They just utterly su**.

Yeah, I think he was just worn down. He played a ton of tennis this last week. Serena though now has the Golden Slam. And also won doubles gold with Venus too.

Oh my... you only got Defoe. Yup, you need strikers. Shame with Modric though... not the worst player...

Tomorrow: Women's Kayak. Yvonne Schuring and Viktoria Schwarz - the name of a whole's nation last hope (don't google the names, only mediocre hotness there). - Kayak us out of our depression... we need a medal...!

US v Argentina game anyone? IMO these refs are to the point of misconduct. Argentina gets away with a groin punch and swatting the ball from the US during an inbound? Vollying a ball into the US's bench after a missed foul shot....Oh yeah, and the US gets a technical for a dunk.
