That alone proves he's not the brightest crayon in the box.

Again, if he's the better player then he deserves the starting job. But as it stands, Rey's got him beat on experience and he'll continue to beat him in experience. Rey will be on the field while Vontaze sits on the bench and covers kick offs. It's a mean curve Burfict has to get around, but if he does than good for him and better for us.

i agree not very bright at all to do that,,,however im willing to bet he "foolishly" slacked off because he expected to not only be picked but be picked somewhat high,,but still it was stupid on his part.

Last year he played with a high ankle sprain; the only thing that was going to break with him playing on that was his ankle. And again, what was Maualuga supposed to say? That the kid stinks and I hope gets set on fire? Even a no comment would've raised eyebrows. I've already said it, it was a damned if you do sort of situation and he made what he expected to cause the least amount of drama.

It's rather ironic.
That was the play of Rey's NFL career and I will not forget that hit on Foster. It was huge! I do wish we had more plays to lean on in support of Rey.

Last 3 games before his injury last year.

4th quarter Niner game. Score tied. Rey strips Frank Gore deep in Bengal territory. That forced fumble sets up go-ahead FG by Bengals.

4th quarter of the Bills game. Score tied. Buffalo has the ball and is driving with just a couple of minutes left in the game. On 2nd and three Rey stuffs the NFL's leading rusher (Fred Jackson) in the backfield for a 2 yard loss. Bills can't convert on 3rd down and Bengals get the ball back to drive for the winning score.

2nd quarter of Jags game. Score tied. Dalton throws a pick that is returned to the Bengals 2 yard line. Jags go play action on first down, but Rey isn't fooled. He makes a great dive to tip the ball out of the hands of Mercedes Lewis in the end zone. Bengals end up holding the Jags to a FG.

After just having a combined138 total tackles in his first two seasons he was on pace to have 125 in '11 before he got hurt.

The big knock on Rey here is that he overuns plays and get out of position. According to Zim ( who I suspect knows more than anyone on this board) it is because he reads the play too fast and gets there too soon. If they can just slow him down a fraction he'll be where he needs to be consistently....

I ahve never heard that. It makes sense to an extent. If he read plays too quickly though wouldn't he be able to have more sacks or passes defended?

I mean I could run to any WR on the field and say that the QB was going to throw there until I got there....lol

But in all seriousness it is an interesting point, was he qouted somewhere saying that?

It would be different in the run game. If he gets to position to quickly he would likely run into a blocker instead of the ball carrier.

But I do know where zimmer is coming from. In the Ravens game last season Ill never forget Rey jumping the gap between 2 blockers that could have been no more than foot between without either of them touching him only to realize it was to soon and Ray Rice seen him and cut it back inside instead of following his blockers to the sideline.

That's not what my eyes saw yesterday at training camp although I would trust Mike Zimmer's opinion more than my own of course. Now when Rey Maualuga played the outside with Dhani Jones in the middle, this assessment would be spot on because he overran plays a lot. However, at middle linebacker yesterday, I saw some fairly good north-south movement from Rey and he was doing some excellent blitzes too. Unfortunately, when he needed to move sideways to pick up a runner out of the backfield or drop into coverage, YUCK! Snails hopped up on barbiturates move faster.

In every aspect of middle linebacker play, I have to painfully admit Vontaze Burfict is better. I like Rey a lot but, even more, I want the best middle linebacker on the field.
