I remember the Bengals wanted to try him at Guard last year, but he didn't want it.
With the spot open for an entire year, it seems like he'd be open to it rather than sitting the bench... |

I believe that Marvin said that they did try Anthony Collins out at guard last year during practice, but they didnt like him there

I really like Collins, but his time here is running out. He could be starting on a few other teams as tackle, but being stuck behind Whitworth and Smith; he has no chance. Good depth though.

UPDATE:
Yes, they did try Anthony Collins out at guard last year, Marvin said that "didn't quite understand it."

Just my opinion, but he plays too high and just isn't enough of a "strength" player to play on the inside. He is an athletic tackle who slides well...I just don't think he could move anybody on the inside in the run game.

It is much easier to find someone to fill in at G, than it is at T. Anthony Collins is the first backup at both LT and RT, I highly doubt that the coaching staff would think about putting him at G right now.
Everyone with eyes can tell that AC would make an excellent G, but he just doesn't want to play that position. Seems kinda stubborn to me, he could possibly make more as a starter, but yet chooses to remain a backup.

I guess the results weren't so great when we tried that move previously. This isn't the first year that we've thrown his name out as a candidate at guard...or the second. He usually steps up when his name is called at tackle.
However, I'm pretty sure I watched him get blown up by Couples a few times last night and saw his number behind the play against the 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Him comming back surprised me and he resigned really quickly, especially after getting called out by ML for not wanting to play guard (a position that we really needed filled). I figured Cleaveland or St Louis wouldve been a good fit they are both pretty this at OL and couldve competed for a starting job.

I'm glad you started this thread because Marvin NEVER talks injuries, but he said guard Wharton probably lost for 2012, which means he is, considering Marvin almost never talks injuries. So what are the other options now ???
I say, why not practice Collins at guard, and some of our other back-up tackles and centers. Nothing as strange as other positions, but O linemen are O linemen. Maybe all the back-up O lineman should get a try at guard in practice before they get cut. Then there are undrafted guards. Did the Bengals have anybody at guard on their boards who just wasn't drafted by anybody ? But the option I'ld like to see is Bengals watching the players teams cut in the last week or two of preseason. The final cuts. These are players that almost made other teams. Final cuts. We could possibly find a veteran guard who lost his job to a top rookie or vise versa. When we cut Willie Anderson, Ravens were glad to sign him. Maybe a team cuts a guy because he is old and not the long range future and that could be our guy because we only need him in 2012. Possibly a guy Bengals let go who they may not mind back now. Somebody on here mentioned Steinbach this off season, Marvin mentioned Williams, maybe something like that is worth a try if they become available and healthy. But I think we can do even better when teams make final cuts. But I like your idea of trying Collins or other O linemen sitting on the bench because I think we are more loaded at tackle than guard. Whitworth has started at left guard, and maybe a tackle can play left tackle, but I'm not crazy about that idea because left tackle is so important and Whitworth is pretty good. The simplest would be if our guards step up, but I agree, why not give some back-up O lineman some practice time at guard. Thats why you have back-up O lineman, to go in and play center, guard or tackle if somebody goes down in a game. I'm not saying Boling and Zeitler aren't the guys this year, but even they need back-ups in case, Yikes, they get injured.

Good News.... Rotoworld. com had us rated 3rd best O line going into 2012 due to our depth....... Collins, Boling, Roland, Bell have 149 combined games of playing time. Also Otis Hudson. That if somebody got injured, we had great depth., per Rotoworld.com....who I got asking Google " 2012 NFL O line rankings. " We were 3rd behind Packers and Patriots. ......So, I think if we can get a decent player cut in the final cuts before regular season, we can get our depth back before regular season. This will be an O Lineman who a team almost kept, so it means he was in training camp and preseason so he should be in shape and would just need work with our playbook. A guy cut from a very good O line may be good. I'm not sure of good guards on the bubble for which teams. I'm sure there are some. Or could be a big name center or tackle to add great depth......
So the good news is we were rated as a top O line already with good depth. The good depth is now needing more depth, and when teams make final cuts we can add to the depth lost by left guard out for season. Maybe we aren't rated at # 3 in NFL at this point with left guard out for season, but we sure as heck aren't last. This is still a deep and talented O Line. Boling, Bell and Hudson were listed as guards, so there is still depth and talent. I agree with original start of thread, why not give Collins and/ or Roland some practice time at guard in case they are needed there at some point. Had we been rated a bad O line, it would be devastating, but since we were list #3, we should overcome this. Could be, Boling fits in between Whitworth and Cook very well. GO BENGALS !!!!!! As for Rey, he may be fine, and Skuta and Burfict and other LBs really flying to the football....interceptions, blocked punts, QB sacks, tackles. As for DE, Marvin doesn't talk much about injuries. Losing Geathers and Dunlop would hurt, but until I hear otherwise, I'm going to assume they will be back since Marvin don't tweet injuries. ( this may be another area we need to watch other teams final cuts ). As for safety Mays, possible concussion, I look for him to be back.
