So Cueto should become the distant runner up for the Cy Young right?
Chapman deserves to win it by a land slide.

Well, if you figure only a few guys win 20 games in any season (1-3 typically) it's really not out there. Especially when the next guy up was Tom Browning in 1985

Cueto should win Cy young..I was very impressed yesterday again..
I know this will tick people off but I think Cueto more beneficail for the team then Votto..The Reds can win without him..I was talking with friends yesterday and they mentioned that the Reds could not go far in the playoffs without Votto..I disagree, we paid to much for him and they see it now! |

The Reds always seemed to win with hitting, and average pitching, although the "Nasty Boys" of 1990 needed only for the starters to get to them. Other teams in the 70's, though; went a long way on their pitching, notably the A's and the Orioles:
1970 Baltimore Orioles: Mike Cuellar 24-8, Dave McNally 24-9, Jim Palmer 20-10 1971 Baltimore Orioles: Dave McNally 21-5, Jim Palmer 20-9, Pat Dobson 20-8, Mike Cuellar 20-9 1973 Oakland Athletics: Ken Holtzman 21-13, Jim Hunter 21-5, Vida Blue 20-9 1968 Denny McLain may have been the last EVER 30 game winner! You would have to go back many, many, years to find a Reds team that you could say won BECAUSE of their great starting pitching.

I'm aware of that but I think Chapman has been the best pitcher in baseball this year. The dude is just lights out.

Now, come playoff time, when the rotation shrinks, Cueto becomes of paramount importance. The crazy thing about Chapman is that in the spring, he was the best STARTER in all of baseball. Fast forward to the summer and he has become the most dominant closer that most of us have ever seen.

Looks like Jayson Stark agrees with me on Chapman.

He has faced a total of 216 hitters this year and he has struck out 106 of them! He has only had 39 batters reach base against him this season. He is striking out 49% of the batters he faces and they reach base only 18% of the time. He is averaging 7.57 strikeouts per walk, and 16.7 strikeouts per 9 innings. Those numbers would be great for a dominant high school starting pitcher. Chapman is doing this against major leaguers. Not only are those numbers the best of this Major League season, but they could be historically good if he keeps it up.

Something that has been plaguing this team....
From Elias: Reds had 14 men left on base through 7 innings without scoring a run. The last team to be held scoreless through 7 innings despite leaving 14 men on base was: Senators vs Tigers, on September 14, 1969 (14 left-on-base, 0 runs through 7 innings)

Billy Hamilton is chasing the pro baseball & minor league record for SBs in one season.
He is at 139. The record is 145. He should be able to take it this week. Today he was caught stealing meaning he's still 6 away. The Blue Wahoos still have 19 games to go. Don't be surprised to see him on the big league (and playoff) roster as a key PR in games =)

Oh, for the Mat Latos trade haters...
Latos, first 14 games: 5.20 ERA, .274 OBA & 16 HR allowed (1.14 HR/game) Latos last 10 games: 1.83 ERA, .180 OBA & 5 HR allowed (.5 HR/game) Again...We got a top notch pitcher who will be INCREDIBLY useful in post-season play for 4 guys who likely are still tearing up AA/AAA with the possible exception of Alonso who is warming the bench except for this recent stretch with Votto's injury.

BTW, I haven't seen anything covered on it in the mainstream. Obviously I heard about it on the Reds website, but I figured lots of people here didn't see it. Hence the "newsflash." But thanks for the update. It has been stored in my opinion folder at home under "********* comments" ![]()

But thanks for the update. It has been stored in my opinion folder at home under "********* comments" I will file this under obvious... 700 wlw blog has covered him since half way through the season. Do a google search for billy hamilton and almost any major city on eith coast. Everyone knows about him. I do agree about you on Latos trade though. I know that when Latos was struggling that told people to chill out. I would like to think that he has out performed most anyone's expectations. He could easily be leading this team in wins. But back to Hamilton, he could give us a mojor weapon during September call ups, if not also during the playoffs. Hopefully he can learn CF and light a fire under Stubb's ***. |

Very difficult to edit on my POS phone. Sorry for lack of true quoting and lack of editing ability...
Anyhow, we have a 6 game lead. Cards will overpass pirates. Guess everyone should check wlw blog each day. Some above post talked about Chapman, and how he ranked this year versus the league. He is setting new MLB marks. Figured that wasn't a "newsflash" either. |

As far as Chapman...If he gets his ERA under 1.0 he may be a Cy Young candidate. BTW, this is to post about the going-ons of the Reds. Just because it's in the mainstream doesn't mean everyone has seen it. We post to see everyone's opinions and maybe find a new nugget or two. Obviously the Reds won on a walk-off homerun...But that didn't and shouldn't stop people from voicing their enthusiasm towards the 4th straight Reds victory. Another non-"newsflash."

BTW, an update on Robert Stephenson:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_mlb&c_id=mlb He has a total of 11 starts (only 48.2 IP) between Dayton & Billings with a combined 2.40 ERA, .183 OBA & 57K!!! Oh, btw..His fastball has been clocked at 101. And he just turned 19 in February (drafted out of high school last year for you not in the know.) Now THAT is impressive!
