based on what? is there a minimum amount of games played where everyone qualifies for this? and how is a good backup defined?

anytime a starting qb is hurt in the nfl, it's a bad situation regardless of who the backup is, what everyone should know by now is if a backup is playing, then clearly he isnt as good as a starter or else he would be called the starter

Based on statistics and actually having seen Grad and other backups play. Having your starter out for any amount of games is definitely a bad thing, but you're acting as if all backups are the same which is simply not true. The Patriots went 11-5 with Matt Cassel.

That's a best case scenario of course, but there are plenty of other QBs out there that are fully capable of keeping their teams competitive if the starter is only out for a few games. When scanning other NFL rosters I can see at least 25-26 backups I would rather have than Grad. Heck, I would even take Garrard or Troy Smith over Grad. Maybe even Dennis Dixon.

well one thing is the same when it comes to backups, there will be a dropoff, I mean Cassel did go 11-5 with what was the nfl's easiest schedule that year but 11-5 is down from Brady's 16-0 the year before and chances are the Patriots would have won at least 14 games if Brady played that schedule

With Gradkowski I'm not as worried as most seeing what he did in Cleveland last year when Dalton got hurt, by no means would I want him to start but in spontaneous moments where someone gets hurt like that last year, that's where I see him as serviceable as a backup and like I said, I'm not saying he's the best but I dont think he's the worst either seeing as he managed to win that game in relief last year, I mean if a backup can beat lesser teams then he's doing something right because not many will beat greater teams

I guess we have to agree to disagree. IMO, Grad looked terrible in that Browns game last year. The only reason we won was that Jay and Grad noticed that the Browns didn't have the correct personnel in, and Grad hurried up and snapped the ball. AJ wasn't even covered on that play. Basically, Grad lucked out.

You are right, there will always be a drop off when your starter is out, but the drop off with Grad is huge. I don't think he is capable of leading this team to any wins as a starter (not counting fluke plays). All the evidence (statistics and actually watching him) should tell you that he's one of the 5 worst backups in the league. That 65.8 rating is easily one of the leagues worst (of ANY quarterback).
