bengals Salary Cap Numbers That Will Surprise Some

We have the 10th most cap room at 10.4mil.

Not as much as I was thinking we would have. But still enough to front load some contracts (Andre and MJ NOW). It annoys me that our front office seems to be outclassed by many teams that better utilize contract structures to manipulate the salary cap.

The Bills got Mario, the Bucs got Vincent Jackson and Carl Nicks, the Broncos got Peyton, and they all have more cap room than us. The Eagles signed the dream team last year, and gave extensions to McCoy and Djax, they still have 21.4mil??!?!!?!

Sometimes it just seems like there is a rule we aren't aware of or something.

I've got no clue about any of the business end of things. It would be nice to have someone with knowledge of the situation give us some insight. But it seems to me like we might be spreading the wealth a little more heavily than other teams.Could have something to do why we're arguably deeper than them.

I've been waiting for years for the Bengals to start getting creative with contracts. It would've been nice to see them make Geathers restructure his contract. He's definitely not worth 5 million. I think Geno has 2 years left on his deal. I would look into resigning Andre and MJ right now, but I wouldn't overpay for either one. Andre is not a franchise tackle and MJ is not a premier pass rusher. We should be able to sign both to reasonable deals.

I don't really want to see them over-spend for Michael Johnson. If he want's good starter type money, I say let him walk and draft a GOOD Defensive End. However, if he doesn't want big time money, he's worth keeping around. As for Andre Smith, the Bengals should be working on a new contract for him now. He's a damned good RT and I think we just got to see the beginning last year. I would bank on him having an awesome NFL career.

Also....extend Geno yesterday.....

Agreed with this.
MJ is average.
Andre is one of the best RT in the NFL. Anyone who disagrees is still just whiny over how his career started.

Geno will be paid. A lot of moolah comin his way

MJ is 25 and played more snaps than anyone on our DL last year. Our DL was the strength of this D. I don't think that should be easily overlooked. If you factor in durability, pass rush, and consistency he is our best DE.

Good DEs are not just easily aquired. And we have a good one in MJ. There is a reason it is a premier position that gets big contracts. Because guys like MJ are rare. Since you want a GOOD DE I assume you would want to take one in the first round, but even doing that there is no sure thing. Reading through the list of DEs he was drafted with. He is the best one that came out that year.

Consistency and pass rush....not two words I would use to describe MJ....

He was a 3rd year player who was 3rd on the team in sacks. He played more snaps than anyone on the DL for the 7th ranked D in the league. He has played 16 games every year. He has improved every year.

These guys don't grow on trees. I think it would set us back pretty far if we let MJ walk and end up with a Derrick Harvey or Everette Brown early in the draft.

This isn't the kind of guy you draft and develop to let walk away.

Okay that's nifty.
But he still disappears. He doesn't generate a ton of sacks.
He ranked 3rd behind guys who clearly played fewer snaps than him.
He isn't a pass rusher.

I wont be upset resigning him but isn't and shouldn't be priority over Andre or Geno.

Fair enough. I think Andre and Geno are top 5 at their respective positions. However Geno has 2 years left on his contract and two of our 4 DEs are set to hit free agency after this year. I see a situation that is much more urgent.

I think it would be wise to secure the services of the best 4-3 DE from the 2009 NFL draft.

If the Steelers can pay 3 LBs a total of 28 million dollars this year, we can afford to keep our starting RDE.

Does anyone know if the Bengals carried over any of the previous year's cap space? I know some teams did and that created more space for them on that list.

As others have said, lock up Geno now. Extend him early and give him some guaranteed money now and hopefully his contract in turn won't break the bank. Give and take. I wouldn't mind seeing Howard extended as well.

Normally I would never want to extend a guy when he has 2 years left, but I see your point. We may get a better deal, and Geno is definitely the 2nd most important player on this team IMO.

Andy, AJ, Whit, then Geno.

Yes MJ is definitely worth re-signing. Atkins, too. I seem to remember a very solid DE who played here for several years, Always good for 80-90 tackles/year, plus 8 or so sacks. But he was always getting ripped for not getting double digit sacks. Justin Smith, a nice kid, and still starting for the echhh 49ers.

Not only would I like to see all 3 of these guys back, we need to find a way to bring in some key free agents.

Not that we need to break the bank on a FA but I would like to see us make more of an impact.

Ben Grubbs or Carl Nicks over a guy like Wharton says alot about a franchise's wanting to win mentality.
