Why are we still guessing on whether a FG is good or not? If instant replay is good for regular plays why not on FG tries? I mean can't we station a blinking camera above each pole and view downward? How hard is that? I mean on a FG there isn't any continuation or anything. It's either good or no good.
Anybody else mystified as to why this can't occur? Even if the ball goes directly over the pole a computer could be programmed to determine if greater than 50% is "inside" or "outside" the goal post. What gives? |

What if the ball hit the camera directly on top of the pole? All that has to happen is the tip of the ball sneak inside the upright. This was the case in the Bengals @ Browns game in 2009 when Shayne Graham booted a GW field goal as time expired, and in the Patriots @ Ravens game just last week, when rookie PK Justin Tucker made a GW field goal as time expired. In both cases, the tip of the ball just sneaked inside the right upright at the very top, and thus both FGs were declared good.

This was brought up recently and the best thing I remember reading was to just extend the damn posts. Make em taller...seems pretty simple.

You'd still have the refs stand underneath in such cases. But honestly, how hard would this be given today's technology and $millions made from this sport?

It's probably something to do with fear of a slippery slope. Integrating technology into the game of football has to be done very precisely and carefully. It's mostly to do with older fans who watch the game. I'm sure something of the like mentioned in this thread will be integrated into the game in the not-so-distant future.
