Maualuga had a good game, but not a great game. He still seemed to play soft, and wait for the ball carrier to come to him. That gives up yards.
Maualuga needs to explode into the ball carrier and make him move backward, that is what the MLB for the Jags did all day. That is what Burfict did.

It is important, because it makes the difference from 3rd and 3, and 3rd and 5 to 7. If you want to be a good MLB you breakdown, explode into the ball carrier, and drive throught them, you do not wait for them to make contact with you.

Other than that this looked like Maualuga's best game so far. It was a big improvment over the last few games. We need to see improvement each week. If we do, the D will improve greatly, right along with Maualuga's play.

Rey was fairly mediocre this week, but that's a definate step up from being a total embarrassment the first three weeks.

The most frustrating part of this is that it's exactly the opposite of what made him good before. He used to be so aggressive, almost too much so, occasionally overrunning plays.

I remember in some of his interviews, Rey said that he needed to slow down and let the plays come to him. Is he being coached out of his aggressive style?

I don't know, but in my memory of Maualugas history, he was always aggressive and flying to the ball at full speed. But this season he is not playing with that same style, and it's really frustrating to watch.

Rey was extremely overaggressive the first three weeks of the season,IMO. He overran a ton of plays and routinely found himself out of position and whiffed on a lot of tackles as a result. This week,he was more passive, but primarily was concentrating on defending his gap. With this DL,Rey doesn't need to run around with his hair on fire and make plays all over the place for our run D to be good. He just needs to play his assignments properly and not overpursue.

New LB coach so maybe... Maybe they decided to let the front 4 win that battle and have the linebackers at the next level and not crashing the line.

That's exactly what it is...all you have to do is watch the games to see Zimmer has Rey falling back into protection far more often than he has him crashing and banging up front.

Whatever he's doing, he needs to do the opposite from now on because he's been a liability out there and largely typified out defensive struggles. He looks slow, uninspiring, and like you say it doesnt look like he's going full pelt. He was a bit better against the Jags (defence as a whole played well), but I wanna see him keep moving in the right direction.

I call bull crap on the people say Maualuga had a bad game.

He came up and stuffed the run better this game then any game so far. Not just this year, but so far.

Maualuga was not the one getting beat, it was Skuta. Twice players caught the ball on Skuta and Maualuga had to come over and clean up the mess. Skuta can't cover and has no place on the field on thrid down. He is worse than Maualuga, which means Skuta is bad, real bad at covering anyone.

Say what you want, Maualuga had a good game, a very good game.

The only complant I can even think of, other than the soft zone coverage, is the attempted strip on Bush, that allowed a first down. Even so it was trying to make a play.

Clements was probably the MVP of the D.
Followed by Rey, Reggie and Newman.

Rey was solid today, but one decent game doesn't cement his position.

I say it would be Reggie, Rey, and maybe a distant 3rd Newman. Clements did OK, but was not close to being D MVP.
I think Reggie and Rey come down to almost a coin toss.

Clements had the big FF and a few big tackles.

Rey was good enough it should shut people up for a week about Burfict moving to MLB right now.

I agree on that.

Maualuga had his best game so far this year. It was one of his best three as a Bengal, if not his best game.

I think he is slowly getting his feet under himslef again.

The only big miss I saw by him was that great throw and catch down the middle. But that was more on the S.
Just the type of play you have to tip your hat to and move on.

We need to see more of that, and see it when he is filling a hole.

He did have a good hit on Thomas (RB for Finns) that knocked Thomas out of the game, for a while.

He filled the hole perfectly on a 3rd and short. That was a picture perfect play by Maualuga.
