Default Should We Resign Andre Smith Early?

Andre Smith is in his final year of his contract because we didn't sign him to the extended 6 year contract. So far Andre has been having a good year and my question is this, do we try to resign Andre early or wait till after the season and get into a bidding war over him with other teams?

I am forever behind giving guys contracts before the season, but as of now, I'd wait until the bye week. They still need to think about MJ, Atkins, Dunlap, Gresh. Although who they think is priority past Atkins is their deal

I'm surprised we wasted a year of not re-signing some of the players who have contracts up this upcoming offseason. Although not re-signing Howard may have been smart now, but still, we wasted an opportunity to not go into next offseason desperate with players like MJ, Howard, Smith, Rey (although it looks as though Rey is gone) all up at once. We'll probably tag Smith. Unless we use it on Nugent again.

P.S. I wonder if he still has that same greasy agent we all saw in Hard Knocks. That guy seemed like a street hustler who got out of the crack game at the exact right time.

If we don't resign Andre, we're probably going to be spending a first round pick on one of those boys from A&M or Alabama.

I am hoping Mike Brown signs some of the guys this year amd uses 2012 cap money to do it so we have more cap money inthe future to get the studs signed long term like AJ and Dalton in two years.

I pray to the 8lb 6oz newborn infant Jesus that all of these guys WANT to stay here in Cincy. If they all sign we could be looking at something real special for the next 4-5 years.

the only way we keep andre is franchise him. He still has hard feelings over getting lowballed in his rookie contract.

I think we should look him up as soon as we can. I think some of this is going to come down to how much he wants and how much he wants to be here.

Alvin keels is his agent, and he does look like a bit of a hustler. Remember though the big hang up in his rookie negotians was that the raiders massively overpaid darrius Hayward bey with the pick right in front of Andre.

I thought the "hard feelings" were about him showing up over 365 lbs & out of shape.

35 lbs or more over-weight and gets a stress fracture, coincidence?!? No.

If Andre would have played lights-out in the first 2 years of his contract, the Bengals would have opted to take the 2 year option. He didn't, and the Bengals didn't.

WTS, Andre played well last year, and he is continuing to play well in 2012. Absolutely, the Bengals should attempt to extend Andre Smith now. If not, franchise tag him and attempt to re-sign him. (Anthony Collins is our insurance policy signed thru the 2013 season.)

I would not wait until the off-season. We do not need another hole to fill when the team is gaining momentum.

Make a list, prioritize, and start knocking them out.

one thing i want to know i see the cap numbers say we are about 10 mil under cap

is that under the standard cap or is that the number with our rolled over 15 mil?

(one means we have 25 mil the other we are already 5 mil over the standard cap)

Atkins, AJ, and Andy are all players that we "HAVE" to keep. Dunlap is somebody I would really want to keep, especially if he can stay healthy the rest of the year. Andre, Gresh, MJ would all be nice to keep.

Hell if Whitworths knee gets worse we need to resign Andre so we only have to look at finding 1 tackle.. (collins could step in but he would need a backup)

We're projected to have $42 million in cap space next year which ranks 2nd.

I think we have to keep Dunlap too. Our defense as at another level when he plays. He makes the guys around him better.

Yes but that number is probly just based on who we have under contract so that would be the total space we have to resign our own bring guys in and sign rookies? needs to be some clever deal making going on..

I think they let Rey Go.

But you want to keep MJ. (dunlap still has another year left right?)

We should re-sign everybody that is average or above which is everybody on your list. We do not have a good history of upgrading outside of the organization, so anybody that does not get re-signed will require a draft pick to back fill or will be down graded in FA. That would be going the wrong direction.

Even if we kept everybody on the roster, we have 5 positions that are in need of an immediate up-grade. That is a stretch in the draft. We need to re-sign our own.

We spend a lot of resources on our tackles.

He's worth it, especially if he can flip to LT when Whit inevitably declines.

He's not worth a franchise tag, as he'd be paid LT money essentially. Theres still debate on that but I believe It's right.

Edit: check the "sign of the devil" rep
