Default Family billed for dent in police cruise that ran over their child

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/...sEnabled=false

TAMON ROBINSON tried to outrun cops, but couldn’t.

The 27-year-old coffee barista died in April after being struck by an NYPD squad car that began chasing him as he swiped paver stones in the predawn light at his Brooklyn housing project.

Now his mom’s being chased anew, hounded by a collection agency hired by the city with a cruel final demand, the Daily News has learned.

The city has ordered her to pay the $710 cost of repairing the police car that killed her boy.

“We’re still grieving, and this is like a slap in the face,” Robinson’s mom, Laverne Dobbinson, 45, told The News.

“They want my son to pay for damage to the vehicle that killed him. It’s crazy.”

The blood-money letter dated Sept. 27 and mailed to her son seeks $710 for “property damage to a vehicle owned by the New York Police Department.”

Two issues with this sad story. One is the obvious, heartless billing to family of the 27 year old that was killed by the cop. The second is that he was stealing paving stones, yet was struck by the police car that ultimately killed him. Was that an accident or was it done on purpose? If it was done on purpose, that cop should be off the streets and behind a desk somewhere doing paperwork.

No parent is liable for the debt of an adult child. There is something missing from this story.

Yes there is something missing from that article. The collection notice was never addressed to the mother and when the law firm found out the person they were trying to collect from was deceased they dropped the collection. Sounds like NY Daily News doesn't verify their stories.

I am guessing the city just made a claim against the estate of the guy and his parents are the executors.

But this is actually not that uncommon. I have clients all the time who are charged with damage to police uniforms when they get torn in a struggle or pursuit.

I am not addressing the issue about the police intentionally running down the guy because I don't know anything about the facts. Obviously I am not in support of police running down and killing people just for petty theft, but they are allowed to pursue fleeing criminals.

Well, the crew members of the Titanic who went down with the ship were billed by White Star Line for their uniforms. Or at least their families were. Seems only fair. Hard to make a profit if one lets compassion get in the way.
