I saw a hip hop documentary in which all of the old school rappers, RZA, Ice-T, and about 20 other old school peeps talked about the fake Rick Ross. The fake Rick Ross was a corrections officer before he became a rapper and playing like he was some crack slinger.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before in this thread. I like the old school stuff. The 90s were the best, and the 80s rap was about getting the party started for the most part.

My faves are Snoop, Ice Cube, Ice T, Wu Tang, NWA, Run DMC, and all of the other Godfathers of rap from the 80s and 90s. And it's not because I'm an old fart. I just started liking rap a couple of years ago, except for when I was into the whole Breakin' movies when I was a kid. I named my black Pug doggie "Biggie".

Rap from the 80s is awesome. Like you said, party starting rap. Good ****.

Dre was not a good rapper. He usually pays other rappers to write for him. He is exceptional at making beats and hit albums that take 10 years too make. Snoop had a great cd and features on death row but nothing special outside of that.

Tupac was a poet and entertainer. He made you feel it, but he put out a whole lot of duds in between greats like Me against the world and macaveli. Trust me, I have them all and some of the beats make them unlistenable.

BUT Biggie Smalls was in fact, the illest.

Andre3K is goat imo. Biggie is reasonable to submit. Which is really the most you can say short of agreeing with someone's favorite.....Unless they try to say someone like Warren G was the best ever, then you just laugh at them.

Because I'm quickly becoming an old curmudgeon who doesn't like anything and just listens to De La Soul cassettes, I'm gonna throw this out there for you young folks who think lil weezy and the like are awesome cuz they get stoned out of their gord and let the weed ghost write some semi-clever ish for them from time to time.

Thank you. I like what I write, I've written stuff I like a lot better than that, but I hate how I sound, I really do lack rhythm. My buddy still makes music all the time, he's awesome. The stuff he makes now is amazing, I'll post some if he ever gets around to uploading some songs online.

I like it. Idk if it's an issue for you but in case it is I would say that if you find it difficult to stay on beat and hit your snares, edit out words you don't need.

For example, I can't tell you how many times I'd have written something like this....

"It's that moment when you can't appreciate the complexity
Let it settle your missing the point like a broken needle I express extensively"

Then in order to be able to say it on beat it would end up more like this.....

"You can't appreciate complexity
Ya broken needles miss points
I express extensively"

That is actually my problem is staying on beat when I do rap, when I right from now on

It's cool, especially for so quick. Not really a critique but what I told OB is just like my main issue when I used to record stuff....to hit your snares, ya end up having to cut a lot of words out and fragment the krap outta your sentences. But then it all depends on your style too, and your own individual ability and everything. So you and him might not have the same problem as my no rhythm havin' a** and may not necessarily have to edit your lines as much.

Oh, and write to a beat, if you have the beat you're gonna put vocals on, perfect, if not, just write to a basic beat. If when you compose it, you're already constructing it around the beat, it will be easier to put the vocals on later.

positive K? Your moms in my business positive K? Treach had skills but to have NBN 1? Beatnuts had a couple songs. 36 chambers was great, but Wutang has had a bigger effect on hip hop as solo artists with Raekwon and Ghostface Killa being the standouts of that group.

I'm the opposite, I think some of the old hip hop doesn't stand the test of time and sounds corny. You can't just blindly click on a present artist, you have to know who to look for.f

The 90's took hiphop/rap to another level. Then the 2000's came and the rap was awful(of course there was some good, mostly bad) Everybody made up a dance first, and then a song around it.

I said back when Kanye West first came on the scene that he was a savior for hip hop and people questioned that. I still believe that to this day. The back pack boys that think its only good if its underground may disagree, but their opinions are based on hate and being a fan boy...or backpacky.

Not sure JayZ gets his due as one of the best rappers ever either, which he should. He has a large/overwhelming catalog, so if youre a hater or just haven't given him a chance then it could be tough to know what to listen to first.

His first album from 1996 is a good start. "Reasonable Doubt". Why is it classic? Because it stands the test of time. Biggie and Pac are dead, now here comes Jay. First album of 11...not counting mixtapes or collaborations with RKelly, or Watch the throne.

Jay Z and Kayne West both do not get their dues because of the amount you see them. Both are great actual writers and rappers. Kanye has an annoying mouth on him and Jay Z is everywhere.

they get the money and recognition, but it seems the younger generation or backpacking hiphop heads tend to hate on them and yell about illuminate.

People see Jay Z now as a guy who's latest songs are on car commercials and for the song New York which will keep his family rich for generations. Jay Z has skills to put him at the top of the lyricist list, but you have to go back to his early stuff to witness the skill.
