Default Windows 8

Did anyone else buy the newest version of Windows today?

It is available at many retailers for $70 for the disc version and $40 online as a online download.

It seems very similar to Windows 7 except the start menu is now an entire window with live tiles like windows phone and the xbox dashboard.

One thing I like is the fact that now if a virus is wrecking havoc on your computer you can do a simple factory data reset.

Haven't installed it yet, but plan to very soon. I got my new PC came with Windows 7 but a free upgrade for Windows 8 came with it.

Just got a new laptop today with 8 on it. Tinkering around with it and seems cool. Uses a ton of memory, and it seems to be more geared for touchscreens. But still figuring things out with it and wondering how I can set it up more similar to 7 in terms of functionality like from the desktop screen.

Edit: Ok about ready to wipe this laptop clean and install 7. Bit too buggy for my taste and for my needs.

Edit again: Have to say quite disappointed with 8. Am having issues setting the freaking wallpaper for crying out loud, themes arent working right either, apps disappeared from the Start screen, which reminds that there is NO START button on the lower left. And I have downloaded all the available updates. I can't believe I am running into this many issues as there are a few other minor things that are buggy as well. I give the launch to this OS a big thumbs DOWN.

My advice is to wait on 8, seriously. It truly isnt worth it right now. It is faster and more secure, but just way too buggy. Heck the brand new App 'start screen' which is a the main new feature of it by far has already ****** up for me. For whatever reason, I lost 90% of all the apps it came with, yet it says they are installed??

That article sums it up for me as well. I completely agree with him on this, and in terms of Windows 8 on a laptop/desktop non-touchscreen, it is a disaster so far. I am bearing through it today, and will uninstall it tonight unless there is some hope for me not to. Then I will install 7 tomorrow while I am work, and deal with the updates and all that crap afterwards.

I guess no one else has it yet, but my advice is wait a few months until patches/updates come out in full-force after Microsoft gets bombarded with millions of complaints by disgruntled users.

Amazon was running a Pre-Order special last week. Got actual DVD for $69.99 with $30 Amazon credit no tax and free shipping. Amazon credit is as good as money for me especially heading into Christmas.

Got it Friday, installed it yesterday and like it so far. Fixed a scanning problem I had with my AIO printer and things seem a little quicker.

Plus got this email from Amazon yesterday:

Microsoft Windows 8 Pro
Price on order date: $69.99
Price charged at shipping: $68.88 Lowest price before release date: $68.88
Quantity: 1
Total Savings: $1.11

$1.11 is your total savings under our Pre-order Price Guarantee.

I love Amazon.

It also holds six of the twenty-five 0-6 starts (24%) and 4 of the 13 0-8 starts (31%) in that time.

It's $40 on windows.microsoft.com but you don't get an actual disc.

The thing is though the disc is useless because it is only the installer you still have to download windows from a cloud server.

As for my take so far I don't see a whole lot of change from Windows 7 other than the start menu. I'd call it Windows 7.1.

Ive done alot of reading in tech forums and such, and talked to some techy buddies, basically Microsoft is tripping over their **** with this. Here is the pattern with them: Windows 98 (good), Windows Millenium Ed (Ugh), XP (good), Vista (Ugh), 7 (good), 8 (ugh so far).

Windows 8 doesn't run on 'guest' mode very well, the security features of Windows 8 are higher than the normal user will be used to, and the 'app look' should be an easier transition into it considering what everyone is used to already using smart phones/iphones. Haven't had a lot of time to mess with it so far, but eh, not too excited either way. (TIP) if anyone is actually in the market for a new computer, every retail store is setting out their Windows 7 on the clearance racks, you can get huge deals for really awesome computers. If you get a Windows 7 computer, go to http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US and get the upgrade for only $15...So far, that is a very good advantage of Windows 8, for the consumer to pick up cheap/awesome computers from the big box retail stores.

From what I've heard from some people, if what you use Windows for involves using a lot of, you know, windows, you're better off sticking to 7. It seems Windows 8 is good for certain things, but productivity-wise, 7 is still the way the go.

What does that have to do with anything? We are talking about Windows 8 and if anyone has used it. No one cares that you have a MAC. Go be a fanboy somewhere else.

I played around with Windows 8 on a virtual machine. You guys are right, the only difference is basically the start menu is gone and its all live tiles. I think its pretty cool and while I do miss the start menu, it will take some time getting used to.

Im actually a software dev and we have been seriously talking about switching our machines from hp elitebook laptops to the Microsoft surface tablets with Windows 8. How cool would it be to show up at work, put your tablet on a docking station, do machine intense development work, pick your tablet up and go home and use it for whatever you want.

Thats the cool thing about the surface. It runs normal software and acts like a normal computer but also has the functionality of a tablet.

8 versions of windows, and everyone still complaining about it.

Yeah, I have NO IDEA why I would bring up MAC. None at all. Can't see how it is relevant whatsoever in a thread where people are saying they don't like it.

Unofficial:
Windows 8 is messing up monitors...You heard it first here, but so far I know a person with Windows 8 and went through 2 monitors in 5 days...and counting.

Monitor detail:
Will not reset, keeps flashing red-green-blue-grey in a consistent pattern...

You have been warned.

Yeah, but even with all the problems I've had with Windows operating systems, the functionality of Apple's stuff I just can't stand. It's all down to a personal preference, but Windows has always made more sense to me than Apple's systems.

Now, if I was a more creative person, in a more creativity driven field, I'm sure it would be different, but as it stands, for the type of things I do, Windows just makes more sense.

Windows and Mac is like comparing apples to oranges. Call me sexy, but I like em both.
