Optimistically: Gruden tells MB that he'll come to Cincy only if MB hires a GM and more scouts, beefs up training facilities, and gets his hands out of the draft and other personnel decisions. MB agrees, Gruden comes to Cincy, and we become the next NFL dynasty.

Realistically: Gruden goes to Philly or some other big-market team that actually invests in their team by hiring top-notch coaches, coordinators, scouts, and free agents and he takes his brother with him.

But seriously, why would he fire Marvin less than a year after extending him? MB probably truly believes that things are going in the right direction, and this will be just another snag along the way that Marv can fix. I dont know tho, I am just depleted of faith these days due to the current losing streak.

He had no problem firing a GOOD Sam Wyche because he wasn't Mike's coach. Mediocre Marv is a guy who brought some success to Mike. Mike most likely feels some connection to him. Remember that horrible press conference after we extended Marvin? Mike said he called Marvin because he thought Marv could get the job done. Marvin will be here as long as he wants to be. Mike will continuously extend him until Marvin can take no more.

I think Marvin is more of a "company man" than Sam was. Had Mike tried to interfere with Sam and his staff (let's move this undrafted DE to TE like Hard Knocks) he probably would have told him to get his arse out of the room. It's always hard for the son, or whoever is beneficiary of nepotism, to prove to the existing staff that they do indeed deserve their position, and that they're worthy of the same respect as their father. It would have much easier for a guy like Sam to dismiss Mike for what he really is than a guy like Marvin, who comes in and Clown is numero uno from day 1.

Also, like many people who inherit things, he probably wanted to start things over a little, and prove he could win in his own way.

All that said though, you're totally right. At some point, if you could get rid of Wyche, how the hell can't you get rid of giggles after TEN years?!?!?!?!?

I see Dallas as a place for first time head-coaches in the NFL. Just a couple or so days ago, Jerry Jones reinforced that he basically has final say on what players they bring in since he is the GM there. That is why I dont see a Grudan, Cowher, or even Sean Peyton ever going there.

It's John Gruden. He'll have his choice of where to go. I guarantee you Cincinnati is in the bottom 3 for any coach in the NFL. The only reason anybody would come here is if they are a first time coach.

Do not see the special of Gruden...he had a stacked team when he went to Oakland and Gannon caught fire for him....went to Tampa and won a Super Bowl with Dungy's team....overall his record looks like a Bengals/Marvin Lewis team...

I can't believe you just typed out all that and didn't realize how good his record looks. And Oakland stunk before he came along and has stunk since he left. Tampa hasn't exactly torn it up since he left either.

Excellent job with these stats! I think that if a move was made to hire Jon Gruden to take over for Marvin it would probably be with 3 thoughts in mind:
1- Jay Gruden would stay on as OC.
2- Jon is a firey/passionate type of guy who could get these young players to play up to their talent potential. He has praised the talent level of this team in the past.
3- It may be believed that with the addition of a strong running game (which Jon believes in) to help open up the passing game, we might be ready to make that next step, and he does have that reputation of being a "next step" Head Coach. Albeit he got a Superbowl ring just once for it [hey, I'll take just 1 at this point. Wouldn't you?].

The report about Gruden isn't from an NFL.com source. It's from WalterFootball, a site that primarily compiles other people's mock drafts and analysis. It's a poorly written, poorly maintained blog. The NFL.com article even says to take the initial report with a grain of salt.

If the source is actually legitimate, the article says Gruden is looking for an opportunity in a large market. Scratch the Bengals from possible destinations.

The only impact I can see this having on the Bengals is losing Jay Gruden to his brother's staff.

Yes...the GM that took nearly $30 million dollars of cap space into the season last year isn't the problem...

Until we start actually upgrading in free agency...the GM is definately part of the problem.

We have no #2 WR, no #1 RB, no Safety, no #2 CB. Those 4 deficiencies are all on the GM.

The issue at C is an injury and I don't blame him for that.

The issues at LB I put on coaching...some of it is the Thomas Howard injury.
