Let me start off by saying that I do not want an 8gb tablet and do not have the money to drop on an ipad /w higher memory. I've decided to buy myself a pretty nice tablet this coming holiday season due to the loss of my laptop.
I have basically narrowed down my search so far to three options. The Kindle Fire HD, The Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and the Nexus 7. Basically the one that I really want is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Basically the only negative I've heard about the Fire HD is that the navigation on the tablet is pretty constricted. This and the fact that the Fire HD has access to about 50,000 android apps, whereas the nexus has access to over 600,000 android apps. Another thing that makes me want a Kindle Fire HD is how much of an avid reader I used to be and I'd like to get back into reading again, which the Kindle Fire definitely trumps in. Basically what it comes down to is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 vs Nexus 7, and I'll get the Kindle Fire HD 7 if it comes down to money available. Someone help a fellow board member out. Kindle Fire or Nexus?

Let's just say I'm glad I got the one I did.
The thing that made it an easy choice was that the nexus has a quad core processor while the Kindle is only a dual core. Pretty easy choice IMO. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I can't speak on the new Kindle Fire, but I have the original Fire and it's good for what it is. I mainly use it as an e-reader, but I haven't had any problems with apps, getting online or watching Netflix. I also like that it's connected to my Amazon account right out of the box.
BUT shortly after we got it my wife won an iPad and the Fire has been kind of pushed to the side.

Just letting you know that Amazon is using the HD display as the main selling point but the Nexus 7 is the exact same resolution (1280x800). Also the Nexus 7's UI is using what is called "butter" and runs very smooth (thanks in part to the Tegra 3 processor) meanwhile the Kindle UI is pretty slow or at least what I have seen of it.

Shouldn't you be laying down? And I got your email, don't worry, I'll take care of the topic you discussed.

After watching some youtube unboxing & reviews, and thanks to the overall consensus on the board, I'm definitely leaning towards Nexus now. Now I've decided I want the 32 gb 7 inch nexus. Online it says this comes /w HSPA+ and uses AT&T. Using these features with the 32 gb nexus 7 are optional, right? I like that I have the option for on the go wireless, but I plan to use wifi for now since I don't have the deepest pockets.

The main question is
"Toy or Tool?" I have a Kindle Fire - actually got free for opening a direct deposit account at First Bank. I really like it and it does everything I need - for fun. I would never use it or any other pad (including iPad) device for work. I can't think of anything more cumbersome then a pad device to right e-mails, word docs, power points, excel spreadsheets. Maybe to display one of those for a demo, but never to work. I can't get over how many professionals I've seen using iPads with an external keyboard and mouse. Um, I believe that's called a laptop... The tablets are all fun but you need to ask yourself the main question - What will be my main use for this device? Toy or Tool? .02 |
