A strange loophole, maybe

So on a scoring play in the NFL the play is automatically reviewed right. So if a coach throws a challenge flag and according to NFL rules that is a 15 yard penalty and results in the officials automatically not reviewing the play.

Well this just happened in the Texans and Lions game.

Well here's the loophole...

Lets say Cincinnati scores a TD that was called a TD on the field yet everyone can plainly see the WR foot was out of bounds and that it was going to be reversed. Could Marvin Lewis not just throw the red flag before its reviewed drawing the 15 yard penalty and locking in the points by canceling the review?

Is that an official rule...15 yards isn't really beneficial. Also if the ruling on the field was a TD I don't see how the team would be benefitting by tacking on 15 yards.

Technically, I guess it is a loophole. I would have to read the rule though.

Its a stupid rule anyway, no team should be given points because of a penalty. Get the call right and give them 15 yards because of the flag don't say hey you tossed the challenge flag well then were giving the other team free points.

If the refs would have blown the whistle like they're supposed to it wouldn't be a big deal and the Lions would have won today.

The rule is being misinterpreted IMO...i believe it was never meant to be applied to a mandatory review....

That would be my take on it, but that's now how they are doing it; it will probably change,imo. However, that wasn't the first time it happened; so he should have known better. Lions coach seems to be a jerk anyhow, so it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. To the OP, even Marvin's not going to challenge a call that's in our favor, though it could be an interesting technicality. I hope Belichick doesn't read our board, because he'd do it in a heartbeat!

I don't know about Belichek but the Giants have a history of flopping and stretching the letter of each rule.

After the Texans Lion Game this rule will probly be changed before the playoffs..

What it needs to be if the TD is reviewed and they still dont agree they should be able to challenge at that point it would be handled by Someone else maybe...
