Without a doubt, I would submit a waiver claim. I don't see a downside.

1. Add to our rotation this year.

We already don't have room for Still or Thompson on gameday, don't really see Babin being that much help.

He has high morals, and high standards, that is the guy that will improve your team.

MJ is playing too many snaps, and needs more down time to produce at his best.

Babin, will give us an extra DE to give Dunlop, and Johnson less plays and may improve the pass rush.

If he will come cheap, sign him, the biggest down side is his age, but then he is not a long term replacement, so that doesn't hurt.

As others have said, you can't have too many pass rushers, or too many D linemen. It is a passing league, and we need to be able to get after the QB, if we want to win the big games.

Changing from a 3-4 OLB to 4-3 DE is a big change ... changing from a DE in Philly's scheme to a DE in ours really isn't.

Yea it shouldn't be nearly as hard of a project going from one 4-3 scheme to another. I would not mind it at all if we got him, for two reasons:
1) He could help in our playoff push, as our defense starts and ends with the pass rush
2) Having Babin on the roster now could end up resulting in an extension for next year and possibly beyond. If he were to show signs of his past performance for the remainder of this season, it would help boost our rotation for next year and possibly remove any need to draft a DE within the first two rounds.

Bottom line: consider Babin to try and help boost our playoff chances. There are a handful of other players we could cut to make room (Quinn is the first that comes to mind).

Babin would be a great fit here... he is an immediate upgrade of Geathers or dingGilberry. The pressure wouldn't be all on him to get to the passer, so he wouldn't have to deal with as many double teams...plus when we play the Eagles there would be some extra motivation there.

Unless you love drafting the same position every 4 years, the team should try to keep everybody who is average or better.

Why would you want any more draft needs than you have already?

The FO has no reason not to extend its own players. We have very few players that we drafted that are past their 1st contract.

If we could somehow get him cheap, sure, otherwise I don't really want him. I'm not saying our defensive line is the best in the NFL, but we'd be just fine without him.

1. He's notoriously bad in the locker room when things aren't going well.
2. He benefits immensely from the scheme he's in and likely wouldn't put up those huge numbers here
3. Only cares about sacks, can't play the run very well.

He'll go to the Lions, I'm almost willing to bet on it.

Steve Wyche just said on NFL AM that the Bengals would be a good fit for the Bengals in their push for the playoffs...

IMO championship teams can never have too deep of a D-line. See New York Giants '09 & '12.. If I'm not mistaken, we have the cap space.

Sounds an awful lot like Michael Johnson, except MJ has only excelled this season, which also happens to be a contract season.

I just think we should cover our backs in case MJ winds up getting way more than he's worth on the market. I really don't think MJ is worth 50-75m.

Still better than Geathers, for example, who's had one good year and otherwise has never had more than 3.5 sacks. And, as mentioned repeatedly in the thread, Babin's disappointing years were all when mis-cast as a LB instead of DE. Where's the roids allegation coming from?

Agreed. When the 49ers were so good in the 1980's everybody remembers Bill Walsh as an offensive genius. But, Walsh always said the key to winning in the NFL was your pass rush, particularly having fresh rushers in the 4th quarter. The 49ers frequently "over"-paid for veteran pass rushers near the end of their careers and just let them play on 3rd downs.

Def not worth 50-75 million, and you right about Quinn. I get killed for this but Roland is our "blocking" TE
so we really don't need to carry a 3rd. Only way I'd take Babin is to keep him from the Ravens who I think would/should make a move for him.
