No because the announcers were trying to figure it out also, they were thinking that maybe he was down because forward progress was stopped, then they said it wasn't that because nobody wrapped him up. They also were wondering what the review booth was looking at.

That can't be right because they can't review forward progress according the Pereira.

The review of the last punt was worse to me. It took like ten minutes when everyone could see it.

Yes but all TD's are reviewed so that is sort of a contradiction. I understand what you are saying though. I never did figure out what they were looking at on the punt. A blind man could see he didn't hit the chalk line.

Oh I agree. That's just all I can think of. It wasn't like he fumbled two inches from the ground with 6 guys surrounding him. It was right there in the open and hard to believe the ref didn't see it. Then bad luck for the Steelers that they had no TOs and it happened right before the 2 min warning. Had they been able to review, the refs would have been forced to either review it or say they can't because it was a forward progress call. Now they get away scot free.

It works out for me with the Bengals chasing the Steelers for a WC, but I still hate bad calls.

Explain this. All touchdowns are reviewed, however you cannot review forward progress. So if they review a touchdown and it is determined that forward progress was stopped short of the goal line, are they not in fact ruling on forward progress? Seems like a contradiction too me.

No.....they would be rulling on the "spot" of the ball....NOT forward progress.

I wanted Tomlin to throw the challenge flag because with all the media attention illegal challenges have got from Thanksgiving it would have got the media to cover the pathetic excuse for the "down by contact" ruling that was made.

That would be the case if he were short of the goal line, at which point the coach could challenge the spot of the ball, but if his forward progress was stopped and the ref signaled a touch down. Then the review booth would have to look at it and if they determined he did not get in because of forward progress being stopped before the goal line. Now you have the contradiction. The ref signaled the TD but the review booth determined that his forward progress was short of the goal line.

I remember a few games earlier in Rice's career against the Steelers where he would get tackled, crawl forward 2 more yards and that's where the refs would spot it. After he tried it 1 too many times Farrior drilled him into the ground as he continued to crawl for the additional yards after he was already down. That was the last time I seen him do that against the Steelers.

That's the way it looks to me.

They can also call "forward progress" without blowing the whistle. It happened in the LSU game Friday too.

The booth wouldn't review forward progress. They would look to see if a knee hit or something, but they will not decide forward progress. So if that's the only issue they will signal no further review needed.
