I have a 4 year old Golden Retreiver, and an 8 year old Boxer. One thing I will never again do: Buy a pure bred dog. So damned prone to disease and other medical problems. Give me something with a deeper gene pool. I love my dogs though. The greatest creatures ever.

That is a false statement.


If you got through a reputable breeder, they are much more hardy. My mother has bred Dobermans for close to 3 decades and always gets the animals tested and doesn't continue breeding animals with health issues, as that is how you build up stong stock. Now all her animals are of great health none have had issues like Von Wildebrands, hip dysplasia, etc... for several generations due to doign due dilligence in breeding.


Now if you're buying pet store, wal-mart equivelent pure breds, you're getting what you pay for, same as any other item in wal-mart. Ask to see pictures of the parents, health records, stuff like that before buying. Request to visit the facility where the animals are kept/raised prior to coming to you or the pet shop. Request to see the whelping pen/area. Ask if there is a health guarantee, which most good breeders allow for.


I am sorry that your experience with pure breeds was a poor one, but if you do your homework, thye really are the best bet for healthly animals. I have a 6 year old Doberman named Loki, black. He kills critters that visit the farm with bad intentions. Is smart enough that he has caught many cats when leased to a tree, yet doesn't kill them as he knows that's very, very bad, and is an excellent tracker.



As for previous comments about pure breeds not being as smart as mixes, I doubt that is true. Same as everyone thinks their child is the smartest, cutest, bestest, people tend to be the same thinking about their other children that they can legally sell or put in cages. I have never found anything to prove that purebreeds are smarter or dumber than mixes, but could understand why some purebreeds might be slower due to inbreeding by the ignorant. But that happens in mixes as well, so doubt there is a significant proof to such generalization.


In addition, Loki is smarter than his sister Kali, so don't believe your stance there holds either. What does hold true is that the females often dominate the household, or at least has always been the case with all of our dogs.

I cannot say, except to speculate that to them, it is just business. When a glass maker makes an irregular glass, he doesn't save it, but simply tosses it out to save room and make a new one. It all boils down to the breeder being a good one, or a bad one.


We always have all the puppies spoken for prior to breeding, with lists of people wanting pets or show quality dogs. The only time we've ever had dogs come back is when the owners were bad, and they were fully refunded.


If the dogs are bred, we only do it twice, then have them fixed. It is not a business, but a hobby. Improving upon the breed, and putting out a smart, athletic, working class dog. Crappy breeders just do it for money and turn dogs into breeding machines. The opnly reason they have to get rid of a breeding age female is because she is a poor mother or needed assistance during birthing. It is the same logic for people raising cattle, not saying that it justifies the process, just explaining the logic.


But we connect a lot more with the dogs, and people are alrgith with cattle treated that way because steak is good. Hamburger is good. Ribs are good. That said, people who abuse or mistreat animals have a lot of problems, and fully support rescues and shelters for getting your pets. Never go to a pet store, as their breeders are often the worst, and if you don't believe me, look into amish dog breeders. Not good stuff.

I also have a miniature schnauzer, Radley, who is six. He's a great dog: smart and easy to take care of. My 23 month old daughter LOVES him more than about anything. He doesn't really feel the same way about her (he was the 'baby' for years before she came along).
