No, I was just asking a question. I've learned to adapt to this board, and give back when I need to. I USED to go off the deep end, and let it bother me really bad. Now I am just curious as to why this board seems so much more confrontational than others I've been to.

Bwahaha. Neek is none of those things!
To your original question, part of the problem with Internet forums or chats is that it is much harder to infer a persons tone. I can say something to you and you can tell if I'm joking or not. Seeing something in a post can be taken a totally different way. Then there are the Internet tough guys and those who just like to argue or trash anyone or anything.

It's simple, you are all wrong and I am right. I can't just let that happen without saying something!

There's a lot of different factors that go into it. A big one that nobody has touched on is that written communication is a bad form of communication. A large part of interpersonal communication is conveyed through body language, facial features, and tone of voice, all of which gets lost on a board like this. Those things have to be interpreted by the reader, and a lot of times the reader gets it totally off base, takes it as a personal attack, then goes off.
Another big issue is that I truly think posters look more at the poster than what they are actually writing. Most everybody on these boards makes good posts, to some varying degrees or another, but people get personal grudges going with somebody and feel the need to troll them regardless of whether they make good points or not. You also get those rivalries spilling out of the forums and threads that originally spawned them into various unrelated forums and topics. I would say the biggest exception to all of this is the Smack forum, however. It's literal purpose is to allow fans a forum to digitally one-up each other. There are benefits and drawbacks that go along with that, and one of the big drawbacks I already touched on, with rivalries spilling out of that forum into the others. Still, I think things are better around here than they have been in years past. There used to be that "Red Ring of Retribution" or whatever it was called that was nothing more than an organized group of posters that neg repped anybody they didn't like into oblivion until they publicly subscribed to their way of thinking or apologized for whatever egregious affront they did to the group in the first place. I don't know if it's still going on, but there was also a well known Steelers' poster on here who liked to read Jungle Noise and dish out neg rep, even though he couldn't actually post there. |
