Civil Engineer here. Well,....two more classes. I'm not sure what schools you went to, but where I'm from, spelling and grammar were pretty prominent in between Kindergarten and the 6th grade or so. Even after that, there wasn't a single year of Junior or Senior high school that I didn't have to take an English course. Then came college.....where despite what people say, you still get correct grammatical and spelling rules enforced. I've even had to take three English related classes in post high school education.

My point? Engineer or not, you still need to know how to spell basic words.

I think grammar smack is weak....except for your case, where you were calling someone else "stupid". You shouldn't be allowed to call someone stupid if you can't accurately spell out the sentence in which you're insulting the man.
