For me, it's a tie between Will Smith and Denzel Washington.
I have never seen a movie with one of those two starring in it that I did not like. |

Johnny Depp is quite talented. Javier Bardem is extremely talented. I've been impressed with Josh Brolin. But I would say Daniel Day Lewis is the best right now.

I'm for most of what you guys have already said.
I have to throw Gene Hackman and Robert Duvall's names into the list.

Maybe I'm a little partial now, after just seeing Lincoln, but Daniel Day Lewis has to be in anyone's top five list. Very, very good character actor.

Denzel Washington - He has done several great roles and lately has done some decent villains.
Anthony Hopkins - His Hannibal Lechter was awesome Dustin Hoffman - Rain Man was maybe the best performance I have ever seen

Yes.
I always forget about Gary Oldman because he blends into his movies so well, that you forget that it is he same actor in each movie. The villains he played in "Leon the Professional" and in the "Fifth Element" were awesome. Kevin Spacey is similar, but to a lesser degree (see "Glengarry/Glen Ross" sometime). Both are highly underrated. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think Gary Oldman is DDL's equal. Both have incredible acting chops.

I agree with a number of things people said here, but I'd like to point out two actors who starred in Harry Potter films, who have had extremely varied careers both on stage and in movies and who are considered or have been considered some of the best stage actors of their time.
Alan Rickman - Snape Richard Harris - Original Dumbledore Also I think Gary Oldham is awesome as well. And since I'm talking Harry Potter, Maggie Smith is one of the greatest British Actresses of all time as well. The cast of the HP movies is truly truly amazing beyond the kids.
