Do you personally know someone who has died from gun violence?
Elaborate if you like.

Unfortunately, I've known two people killed by guns: my baby brother and a soldier who worked under me that shot himself and his girlfriend.

I guess that I am fortunate, as no one in my life has had their life taken from gun violence. Drunken driving however, is a different story.

2 to suicide. 1 shot in an arguement in a beverage drive thru. Guy pulled out a pistol from inside his car and shot our neighbor over a traffic arguement. Pitiful.

Re: Poll: Do you know anyone killed by gun violence?
Yeah I've known quite a few I guess. Two or three to suicide. And two or three to murder. I've also had two best friends hang themselves, one about 10 years ago and the other about three months ago.

My uncle Jimmy was murdered in a car-jacking/robbery about 5 years ago.

I am a retired police officer from Canada (Ontario Provincial Police).
On July 25th 1991, my good friend Sgt. Tom Cooper was shot and killed while responding to a call at Grassy Narrows, an Indian Reserve in Northwestern Ontario. His partner Constable Kevin Orchard who is also a friend was shot but survived his wounds. The perpetrator fled into a wooded area, and returned later and shot yet another good friend, Constable Bill Olinyk who was at the scene assisting with the investigation. Bill also survived his wounds. R.I.P. Coop. I have attached a link to the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation dedication which describes the incident in case anyone who like to read about this hero. http://www.opmf.ca/memorial/display_officer.php?ID=21

Earlier this year my nephew took his own life with a firearm.
A year (or two?) ago a young man who was a former coworker was struck down by a stray bullet outside the club where he had been celebrating his eighteenth birthday. The murder investigation lingered so long that his father ceased taking his diabetes medication from the dispair of having lost his only child, bringing his own life to an end. I attribute the fathers death to gun violence. |

I've sadly seen people take their lives with guns.
I've also seen guns save lives. A few months ago, I was in downtown Cincinnati (Four Corners, if you are familiar with the area) and I was doing a church outreach, basically feeding the homeless and such, and as we were gather people, someone 5 feet away from me shot a gun into the air and put it to my head, yelling at someone down the street. But he quickly put the gun away from me and walked down the street, arguing about drugs. We formed a circle and just prayed for the area once we made sure the police were there and everything was under control.

But the worst personal experience with guns and killing? It involves my Dad.

When i first read your thread i racked my brain and i couldn't think of anyone that i knew that had lost their life due to a gun. Then as soon as i read your post about the soldier and his g/f i remembered back in '94 or '95, i had just started a new job at Jewish Hospital and i was sitting reading the paper one morning and i came across a story about a soldier named Shawn Fulmer who had shot and killed his g/f and then barricaded himself in a hotel room in Roselawn only to commit suicide while authorities were trying to talk to him. I grew up in Newport with Shawn and the story was a shock, to say the least. Anyway.... i answered your thread incorrectly before i realized i did know someone. ![]() |

I went to school about 15 miles from Heath High School. My senior year was the year of that shooting. The odd part was several years later, one of my first interviews was of a girl who had survived that shooting, and was then shot in the lung during the Virgina Tech shooting. I dunno if I've ever met a stronger person.

Re: Poll: Do you know anyone killed by gun violence?
This, I also knew two guys that took their own lives one over a girl, the other I reckon just depression, both times the guns belonged to someone else, not locked up.

I have some solid opinions on guns, the Constitution, and the events of Friday and the many other similar type incidents in the past.
But knowing myself, and how emotionally worked up I tend to get over some topics, I'm going to sit out these threads dealing with guns, and the tragedy on Friday. It's just better for me to not get in the discussion. But I will say my heart aches for all the victims from this, and all the other "random" type shootings. |
