Clint Boling is not our guy imo. He got eaten alive against the eagles numerous times allow at least 3 sacks. Another Lineman i would like to mention is Andre Smith. He was getting beat like a drum when the DE ran around him. I wouldn't mind moving Andre to guard, & moving Collins to RT. Collins was getting playing time in Whitworths spot towards the end of the game & was playing pretty good...but imo we need another guard, we should maybe take one in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Up until Philly Boling had played quite well. As long as Wharton is in good health, guard to me really is a late round depth pick. And honestly I think some of those issues had to do with the chemistry disruption of rotating our centers. Pick one center and go with him these last 2 games.

Stop all the ridiculous knee jerk reactions to one game. You are way over-reacting.
The fact is, we were playing on the road on a very short week. The O-Line is the most affected group trying to recover with only a couple days rest, with all the banging they go through and not rotating like the d-line does. They are still beat up from the previous game. Throw in the fact that Philly is now running a new defense that the bengals only had one game of tape for so they weren't really able to prepare for all the different things the eagles line was doing. This is one of those games you just forget about and move on. They got the win, but other than that, I wouldn't put too much stock in anything that happened in the game. |

Boling has played exactly how I how expected. He's only a second year player and has more growing to do (same as Dalton btw). Next year, let him and Wharton battle for the starting job and take a OG/OT swing player late in the draft.

Only if we address our needs in free agency. Or guys of value that fit those needs are gone.

How is a 4th round guard going to improve us?

Plenty, see the link. Throughout history, the bulk of Guards are taken in the 3rd and beyond. A few exceptions go in rounds 1 and 2, but they have proven to have the same bust/boom potential as other positions. http://www.drafthistory.com/index.php/positions/g

We really only need depth at guard. A 4 would accomplish that.

Is there really even a need of drafting OL at all this draft if we re-sign Andre Smith?
OT: Whitworth, Smith, Collins OG: Zeitler, Boling, Wharton C: Cook, T. Robinson Robinson was originally supposed to be depth at OG, but became our C when Cook went down. Wharton should be back, so that adds depth (if we keep him). Collins will still back up Smith, and we won't need Roland to play the extra TE if we draft a good blocking TE (Michael Williams, Alabama). Depth for the OL can be found in FA on an as-needed basis. No need to use a draft pick on one unless Smith leaves. |

If, by some miracle Warmack is available when we draft, he would be my pick. I don't think he will be there in the 20s though.

Wharton could be expensive if he is in a back up role. If you want to sign other guys at other positions..ie..MJ or Andre...then a guy like Wharton could be expendable and replaced with a modest draft pick.

im with you on this. Ive liked the way trevor has stepped in and boling has been playing well...with wharton coming back i like our depth on our line. If we cant resign wharton we sign one in free agency. were young and mean upfront with some solid guys to come in as depth. if we lose wharton, then go to fa to add depth. |

That's exactly my point. You think another guard drafted in the 4th or later is going to be an upgrade over him? There's always a chance, but not likely.

I think Oscar Johnson T/G 6'6 335 from LA Tech would be a good pick in the 5th.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Bengals draft a run specialist guard at around round 4 or 5. But taking one early is a mistake with needs at RB, S, and LB, maybe even needing multiples at one or two of those spots.
Get a guy who is a big road grading OG already, that way he can contribute day one on shortyardage and goal line situations. Plus it gives the Bengals a better option than Roland if they go with the unbalanced line. Depth is never a bad thing, and think the o-line will get a slight touch up in the draft. Boling is likely still growing and will only get stronger next season. He will hopefully cut down on the mistakes and be much improved for the 2013 season.
