Default Help Needed With Squirrels

I rarely start a thread, but I am in need of some advice. We bought a home recently, which backs up to a golf course. Therefore; there were many trees surrounding the house, to provide protection from balls.

After removing several trees, we began hearing noises from the attic, and crawl space. Suffice it to say, we have squirrel issues.

Hired a local company, who trapped a couple of them. But they were inept, and would not guarantee that they could get rid of them all. According to them, these squirrels have been in the house for some time.

So, I bought a couple of traps, poison peanuts and a pellet gun. The result is one squirrel trapped, several shot and a couple killed (by my sons and several neighboorhood kids).

But I continue to have squirrels in the attic and crawl space. I want to replace the roof and have the stucco exterior redone, but can't do it until I get rid of them.

Any suggestions or advice? Thanks in advance.

Patch any holes that might be around. A patch is pretty easy to do if you plan on re-doing the exterior anyway. Since you'll be re-doing it soon, you can just throw up a soffit screen. The hole will actually most likely be in between the fascia and the soffit. The Fascia is what the gutter is attached to, and the Soffit is the one to two foot overhang of the roof that runs parallel to the ground. Seriously....they'll get into even the smallest of cracks.

You can also throw some of the soffit screen on the inside of your attic behind any attic vents you may have. Hopefully.....this helps you out a bit.

Here's a little drawing in case you don't know exactly what the Fascia and Soffit are. The cracks can be pretty un-noticable, but 90% of the time, it's how birds, squirrels and other dumbasses get into your attic.

What you are doing is ignorant and deplorable! NEVER EVER USE POISON on any mammal. You don't deserve the proper advice but I will give it to you before you end up killing a family pet or one of your neighbors family pets or heaven forbid a young child.
There are products on the market that put out sonic pulses and will keep any squirrel, rat, snake. or just about anything else a half of a mile from your precious property.
Your means of dealing with the issue is obviously uneducated, cruel, and fruitless.
Dispicable!!
You can keep on trying your archaic methods and it will be to no avail.
Go buy yourself a Sonic Squirrel Repellent for only 20 dollars...DB
Then have your wiring inspected afterwards.Problem solved.
Should have had the place inspected properly before you purchased it.As the people already told you those animals were there from the get go.

Damn! McNeil just went raw on you!

So, Coach....do these sonic things work well? Only asking because I bought one for Mosquitos for the back patio, and I'm pretty sure it actually attracted the little buggers.

The ones that I have been around work wonderfully.
I used to have a job hanging Christmas lights every Fri. and Sat. after T-giving for the people that started The Dollar Tree's. Their property is huge with 300 year old oak trees, walnut trees, and hickory trees. They have the repellent device's and there is not a squirrel in sight on their property. Right next door hundreds of them but not a one on their property. Yes they work very well.
Using poison is not an option imho, plus it simply will not solve the problem.
I foster baby squirrels that have been blown out of nests after hurricanes so the subject of poisoning struck a chord with me.
My apologies, but plz use the sonic repellent. You will be satisfied and the money is well spent. The methods you're trying will continue to cost you money and it will not work. Best of luck and plz quit using poison.

No need to apologize. I actually liked them until now. The sound of squirrels running in the attic early in the morning, has turned me into the "despicable" individual that you have stated.
I will not stop until I have eradicated everyone of them. Certainly, they are welcome to leave peacefully.

No, I just deplore the use of poison's in almost any fashion. If you wanna eat them, hunt them, trap them, it's all good.I understand the fire hazard aspect but the use of poisons angers me. Again it struck a nerve and I apologize for snapping so quickly. I have no beef with X's and O's and again my apologies. Use the sonic product. It will do specifically what you want it to without the possibility of killing the dog or cat and leaving these creatures to die a horrible, painful death.

I had one in my attic, and the only way to get rid of him, was to find the hole and patch it. He was a pain. When i heard him, i went up to the attic, and kind of yelled trying to scare him off, but i never really saw him, only heard him...and he would keep coming back again. It's definitely a shelter, mine was even storing nuts up there. Mine chewed thru the roof. I fixed it and he hasn't come back.

Where would one find this sonic device/repellant thingy? I may be having the same problem. Has a new roof put on a few years ago. The roofers put in some ice/varmint barrier that was supposed to keep em out.

Victor.....has a $50 version and a $20 one. I am sure that they have other competitors in the same field though so shop around. Heck there are auditory weapons used for humans. I know that most of you already know that. It's the same concept I reckon.

Plant some trees.

15-20 years from now, the squirrels will move from their temporary habitat (your house) to their natural habitat (a tree).

Other than that... you'll never get rid of them. Poison works best. Get used to the smell of dead animals. Exterminators are almost useless. Sealing the house is good, but squirrels are like rats... you won't keep them out as long as they're looking for a home.
